CNNSI.com Columnist Phill Taylor says Reggie Bush is a Bust (1 Viewer)

Is the media love affair over for Reggie? I remember seeing two highlights from a Saints game his rookie year where Bush had nice 8 yard and 6 yard runs where he made a couple of nifty juke moves. They were really impressive moves. Great highlights. They didn't show Reggie's 5 other carries in which he got no yards or lost yards and he finished with like 12 total yards rushing. But the highlight is what's important right?

I think that sort of coverage of Reggie is what has fed the infatuation in fantasy leagues for Reggie Bush when he has just not done much with his time in the NFL. Loads and loads of opportunity. Not much execution. The media built him up and created the hype monster. Unless he improves as a RB in his 4th year I think the media will do it's second favorite thing to a media darling which is tear him down.

Link to the story

Did you ever see that episode of Happy Days in which Fonzie has to admit he actually made a mistake but he can't quite say that he was wrong? "I was wr... I was wro..." He tries over and over again, but he just can't say the magic word. I can relate.

Nearly four years ago, in December 2005, I wrote a column about Reggie Bush, who at the time was a brilliant USC tailback and the most exciting ballcarrier in the nation. I wrote that whichever NFL team ended up with the No. 1 pick of the draft the following April would be crazy not to take Bush.

Boy, was I wr....

I didn't just write that Bush was obviously deserving of No. 1, I wrote it in the strongest of terms. I wrote this:

"The Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets or whichever lucky team ends up with the top pick would be foolish to over-think this. Their draft-day strategy should consist of two words: Draft Bush. Draft him as soon as humanly possible. Do not let commissioner Paul Tagliabue even finish his sentence on draft day.

TAGLIABUE: Now on the clock, the Houston Tex--

TEXANS: Reggie Bush!"

And this:

"We would not only draft Bush with our first pick, we'd also draft him again with our second, just to be sure. Bush is that spectacular, that rare, that sure-fire, game-changing a talent."

A few days later, a reader e-mailed and asked me if I would admit to a mistake if Bush didn't turn out to be as good as I expected. I said I would, thinking that was about as likely to happen as the Super Bowl being played on Neptune. But now, here I am.

I was wro...wr... I was completely wr...

Bush went second to the New Orleans Saints in the 2006 draft, behind defensive end Mario Williams, taken by Houston. Williams has developed into a fine pass rusher and no one, at this point, could argue the Texans made the wrong move. Though he has had some spectacular moments, Bush has never been the consistent phenomenon that many observers -- hey, it wasn't just me -- expected him to become.

Although "bust" is too harsh a term, Bush would have to be labeled a disappointment. He has never gained more than 565 yards rushing in any of his three seasons, he has been a good-but-not-great punt returner and he has missed 10 games over the past two seasons due to injury. The stud running back from that draft? At the moment, that title goes to DeAngelo Williams, the No. 27 pick, who gained 1,515 yards and scored 20 touchdowns for the Carolina Panthers last year.

It's looking less and less likely Bush will ever put up similar numbers, especially not if his name keeps turning up on TMZ as often as it does ESPN. At this point in his career, he's more well-known for having dated reality show hottie Kim Kardashian than for anything he's done for the Saints on the field. If Bush doesn't get it in gear, he's in danger of falling into the same category as Kardashian -- celebrities who are famous even though we can't quite remember why.

Meanwhile, I could use a little ketchup to help me eat these words:

"We're having a hard time fathoming what we're hearing, specifically, the idea that the team that winds up with the No. 1 pick shouldn't necessarily use it on Bush. To those who are offering this notion, we would recommend extensive testing for hallucinogenic drugs, and following that, a brain scan."

Maybe the reason I'm having a little trouble completely owning up to my mistake is because Bush still has time to make me look good. He wouldn't be the first great running back to get off to a so-so start in his career. Anther former Trojan great, O.J. Simpson, was a sub-1,000 rusher in each of his first three years, just like Bush, before he broke out with 1,251 yards in his fourth season and a record-setting 2,003 in his fifth. (Although of course, that's surely the only way in which Bush would want to follow in the Juice's footsteps.)

It's a good sign for Bush's career that the romance with Kardashian has apparently ended. He would be wise to lay off the starlets, the Hollywood scene and the endorsements for a while and make sure all of his mental and physical energy is devoted to football. There is still the possibility, although it's growing slimmer, that Bush could eventually live up to his billing as a great back.

More importantly, there's still time for him to make me look like a little less of an idiot. Reggie, do you have any idea how hard it is for a columnist to admit that he's wrong?

How about that? I actually said it.

Remember how exciting that Rose Bowl was?

Vince Young

Matt Leinart

Reggie Bush

LenDale White

Dwayne Jarritt

I thought they would all be big time stars by now on Sundays. I honestly did. What happened?

Once his rookie contract runs out, his life will be a lot easier. He could be a disappointment if he keeps getting injured but unless he disappears from the league, he won't be a bust. I think that if he stops getting injured he could be good, not what he was hyped to be but good enough to help his team win games and possibly be a focal point. It all depends on injuries IMO.

How many 21-23 year old RBs came in and dominated the NFL?

It's all relative. He hasn't been as good as advertised, but he hasn't been a disaster either. He's a solid contributor in the passing game and on special teams. He also helped the team reach the NFC title game in his first season. He's been a disappointment as a pure rusher and injuries have stunted his career, but on the scale of draft busts he's nowhere near someone like Ki-Jana Carter. If you want to talk about a real bust from that year, start a Vince Young thread.

There was a huge problem at work that I was called in to fix. I literally saw the kickoff while at a restaurant across the street ordering take out so me and another guy could have something to eat while we worked into the A.M. I followed the game on ESPN.com. That was the suck...

For starters, he's a 3rd round, borderline 4th round pick, so I'm not sure what this infatuation you're talking about is.Also, I would say the main reason he hasn't dropped any lower than that is that he was on pace to put up one of the top 5 fantasy seasons of all time last year before getting hurt, and can now be had as late as the 4th round. Not because of any media hype that anyone good enough at FF to visit these boards isn't fooled by.

You are to Bush as Jim11 is to Obama.Your obsession is borderline creepy.
Hmmm. You call it an obsession. I call it a fun hobby. I love getting the Reggie fans all up in a tizzy. But I think you miss the broader point here that I tried to make in my OP. I think a great deal of the Reggie love is fueled by the media hype. Did you read what that guy quoted from his own article prior to the draft Reggie's rookie year? These people were voting for him to get into Canton prior to the draft. I'm thinking that he will get a lot less press this year if he continues with what he has done so far. In fact, if it gets ESPN ratings to show Bush getting stuffed, tearing the icon down that they built up, then we may see a more "fair and balanced" reporting of Reggie's on the field accomplishments.

Too easy. Nobody would come in, see a mountain of solid statistical evidence staring them in the face that shows Young is not a great QB, and still say, "I think he's a good passer." Or my favorite, "did you see the clips they have of him on YouTube. He's amazing."

What the heck:

844 yards from scrimmage and 9 TDs in 10 games, not too bad. It's been 3 seasons, his draft position is now irrelevant. IMO, busts only consist of people who are absolutely terrible, Bush is merely an underachiever... for now.

Reggie Bush was the #1 PPG RB in my league last year. He finished as RB23 despite missing 6 games and he was the top scoring player of any position for the first 8 games.

Best. College. Football. Game. Ever....But you do make a great point. What the heck happened. Who has the best shot to turn it around before their careers are over? White? Leinart?

:bag: did you just time warp in from about a couple of years ago? I see/hear pretty much no one "hyping" or "loving" him.what's next, a discussion about whether Barry Sanders should give back his signing bonus after retiring?
