Co-Champions Quandry... (1 Viewer)

Long story short, we ended up in a tie (87 - 87). I am the commissioner of the league, and also won the points title.

My opponent had the same regular season record as me, but had about 100 fewer points during the season.

Anyway, ESPN's fantasy site doesn't have an option for tiebreakers in the playoffs (during the season, we kept all ties as ties).

But, the front page of our league home congratulates only my team as the champion (and in the overall ranking has me in 1st place).

My friend is cool with what happened, but bummed, so I'm giving him some extra $$$ for his troubles. Before I offered him anything,

he congratulated me on my victory. For league purposes as well as who lays claim to the trophy, can I call myself the League Champion,

or is it a Co-Champion situation?

Thoughts?

Co-Champion obviously. You tied with no tie-breakers set beforehand or even mentioned. Even if ESPN doesn't have tiebreakers as an option, if you don't want ties to happen in the playoffs, you NEED to specify the tiebreakers beforehand.

You didn't. You tied. You get the trophy on weekends and alternating holidays, be sure she's back by 7 on Sunday.

ESPN does. It's regular season head to head record by default.

Actually, I found this in the league rules...Regular Season Weeks 14 (Playoffs start Week 15) Matchup Tie Breaker None, Leave as Tie Home Field Advantage None ***Playoff Seeding Tie Breaker Total Points For*** Playoffs Weeks 2 Playoff Rounds 2 (1 week per round) Playoff Teams 4 First Round Byes 0 I assume this is why I was awarded the championship. I had more points than he did in the regular season. Is it still a Co-Champion situation?

That's a playoff seeding tie-breaker. This is not a seeding situation. Your rules clearly don't have a tiebreaker for playoff outcomes.

The reason the site 'says' one team won may be because of flawed programming by ESPN in needing to announce a single winner.

Co-champs.

Stop trying to get someone to say you are champion by default. Its a tie score, therefore, it is a co-championship. He is entitled to half the prize money, not just "some extra $$$ for his troubles".

You have no tie breaking rules for matchup in place. You cannot use points or head to head record from the regular season - this is why you actually played a championship game.

You are the commissioner, so you have to set the example and split the jackpot instead of cheaply trying to find a way out of giving up money.

Hopefully there will be a late stat change and one of you will lose to make this a non issue.

Put rules in place for next year - pick a tie breaker player, do bench points, etc. Just because a website doesn't offer rules, doesn't mean you cannot add them in bylaws. But this year, you need to man up and split the prize.

There's no tie-breaker for this season. I'm not even sure why you'd WANT the championship this way, it's pretty scumby to look for some kind of default reason that you can use to make you champion.

You're not the champion as you did not win the championship game. There's no reason to look at seeding tie-breakers as this is not a case where one team has to be the winner to figure out who moves on to next week.

Co-champs.

Thanks for the feedback.

As for those who think I'm trying to "get people to agree with me"...

I was looking for feedback about a unique situation, and provided all the facts about what happened.

Thanks for automatically thinking the worst of me.

This line 'My friend is cool with what happened, but bummed, so I'm giving him some extra $$$ for his troubles' reads like you have named yourself the sole Champ. Co-champs, carry on.

Yup, thats the one that did it

Add decimal scoring next year, that almost eliminates all ties, but make sure you have additional tie-breakers in place as well.

Exactly. What notion are you baseing the argument that you somehow won? There is no rule that supports you winning anymore than your opponent winning. The website 'announcing' a team is just a preprogrammed event that is obviously flawed based on your ruleset (or lack thereof). There really isn't even a reasonable argument AGAINST co-champs that I can think of.

They are Co-Champions unless the rules say otherwise. We went to a decimal scoring system a few years ago to help eliminate ties and our rules say ties are co-champions. This is a total points league and after the game last night our league ended in a tie 1822.2 to 1822.2. Unfortunately I was not one of the teams.

Actually, I found this in the league rules...

Regular Season Weeks 14 (Playoffs start Week 15)

Matchup Tie Breaker None, Leave as Tie

Home Field Advantage None

***Playoff Seeding Tie Breaker Total Points For***

Playoffs Weeks 2

Playoff Rounds 2 (1 week per round)

Playoff Teams 4

First Round Byes 0

I assume this is why I was awarded the championship. I had more points than he did in the regular season.

Is it still a Co-Champion situation?
Your quote above just cements it that you are Co-Champs since this very clearly specifically states playoff seeding tie breaker and not matchup tiebreaker (none, leave as tie). Co-Champs. Split the money, both names on trophy. I would say play next week but your rules do not say that there will be an extra game so even that would be unfair.
