Coach of the Year (1 Viewer)

Eric Mangini - New York Jets.

Wow!! What a job he's done with the Jets. This was a team that went 4-12 last year and were supposed to be 4-12 again this year. He has them in the thick of things and in the hunt for a wildcard spot. This team was supposed to have no playmakers on offense and and a QB coming off of 2 rotator cuff surgeries. He's completely turned around that total debacle left by Herm Edwards.

Runner Ups

Sean Payton - NO Saints

Jeff Fisher - TN Titans

Payton or Mangini.

Marty and Fisher Hon Mention.

Mangini would get my vote.

Sean Payton definately deserves mention, but the Saints have had talent on that squad. McCallister, Reggie Bush, Horn, Henderson, Brees. Those are all playmakers and everyone knew that their offense should be good. No one expected them to be this good, but i thought that they would be good. The Jets came out of left field and are playing real good football. So i would have to go with Mangini.

Don't be like the media and change your opinion every single week just because of one bad game or one good game.

It will be Payton, and it's not even close.

Mangini. He has done a great job with his game planning, and taking a team with not a lot of talent and maximizing their abilities by putting them in postions to succeed. Also got to give props to B.Shottenheimer as OC. I like Payton as well, but I think he's had a little more to work with.

I'd say it is neck-n-neck between Payton and Mangini. I owuld say that Payton gets it for two reasons:

1. The Saints will make the playoffs and have a good shot at going deep into the playoffs.

2. The New Orleans factor. Between Katrina and Reggie Bush, the media has been all over the Saints.

1. Sean Payton2. Mike Nolan3. Eric ManginiThose would my candidates.
I like these 3 too.Torn as to picking one out of the 3 but it's the point of the thread so I'll say Mangini. The Jets lost some key veteran voices in the lockerroom and didn't have a transitional year. That doesn't happen often in this free agency era. They're extremely young and do not make many youthful mistakes and I figure that's to his credit.

i have to go with payton. as bad as the jets were expected to be, the saints were expected to be just as bad. that the saints are division champs and are poised to be the #2 in the NFC points to payton's impact. if you can't give MVP to Brees then give Payton the CoY.

Has to be Sean Payton.

Lucky or not, this Saints team caught just about everyone offguard. They may not have shocked everyone, but they sure surprised most this season.

Mangini is pretty solid, but I don't think he deserves to even be mentioned.

This was a playoff team before he got there. Edwards took them to the playoffs three times in five seasons, the other two (including '05) were when he lost his QB(s) within the first few games of the season.

I expected the Jets to be there, but never did I imagine the Saints would be in the playoffs this year.

Also, I don't think Fisher deserves it either. He's just doing what he always does. He, like Belichick, could win this award every year.

To me, it goes to the guy who is most likely a one-year wonder, and that's Sean Payton.

The Saints have talent on the team and that was never disputed. The Jets are doing more with less. The Saints offense is very explosive. They have playmakers all around it. The Jets have a rotation at Rb that wouldn't be good enough for half the teamsin the league. Based on talent and maximizing it, gotta go with Mangini.

Let us not forget Jeff Fisher.**snip**
I thought his team was just awful to start the year. I do think he deserves praise now but that just counteracts the negativity for me so IMO he doesn't win
His team was awful at the beginning of the year. They were starting Kerry Collins for crying out loud. That was after letting Volek go, what, the week before the season started? That he didn't lose the team completely is good. Getting them to perform and win is another Music City Miracle.

But the Coach decides who starts.Well that's how I feel. Ya like Fisher, that's cool.

Payton: 1st year coach. 3rd Division Title in Franchise History. Went after Drew. Cut Stallworthless because he had Colston...3 players from bottom of draft....offense # 1 in NFL....Saints still talking BYE in playoffs (lol...that clinches it right there) Excellent play calling all season long, just ask opposing defensive teams about our reverse/double reverse/play action fake reverse formation. I'm not knocking any of the other coaches out there...I'm just saying Payton has many more reasons to be voted COY.

Weren't the Jets 10-6 two years ago? The only reason they were 4-12 last year was because they lost their franchise QB for the season. Payton WILL win this award hands down.

I'm not really arguing for him. I just think he deserves mention.A more interesting debate may be over who is GM of the Year.

IMO Sean Peyton should win if it was today, but if the 49ers win the remainder and win the West Nolan should be given strong consideration too.

Then Mangini. That team wasn't a bad team, just mismanaged and underperforming.

Then Fisher. He's getting water from alot of stones essentially.

I like the candidates people have mentioned, but Lovie should at LEAST be mentioned somewhere in this thread. You can't ignore what they're accomplishing this year.

That being said, he probably won't have a good shot at winning the award because it usually goes along with a team showing vast improvement between last year & this year (jets/saints, lovie last yr).

I wouldn't argue with ANYONE that votes payton.

I don't like Nolan as a Coach of the Year candidate. As a Gore owner, I've watched a lot of SF this year. While their record is better than most anticipated, Nolan has let a couple of games slip away with what I would call bad decisions.

I see it as this...

1. Sean Payton. The loss at home vs. WAS hurt his chances, but he still is the top dog, IMO but fading.

2. Eric Mangini. The Jets had 4 wins last year. He's making a push. This is Sean Payton's award to lose.

3. Jeff Fisher. Coming on strong. VERY strong.

4. **** Jauron. He has to get some recognition.

Parcells.

If he can make it a year navigating the chaos that TO shrouds his teams in, booting his high-priced-suddenly-and-inexplicably-inaccurate kicker, replacing his veteran QB with a guy named Romo, and still locking up a playoff spot and possibly the NFC East Division Title...?

That's a pretty damn good job and Coach of the Year quality, if you ask me.

I'm trying not to be 'that' guy. But, if Mike Nolan is getting mention here, than why isn't Mike McCarthy? Same record as the Niners, and they waxed them a few weeks back.

Personally, I wouldn't put either on the list, but that's just me.

1. Sean Payton2. Mike Nolan3. Eric ManginiThose would my candidates.
:hot: I'd like to add Brian Billick also. He was on the cusp of being canned last year and he has turned that ship around after firing Fassel and calling the plays. I think Payton in particualr deserves a ton of credit but I think Brees deserves a hell of a lot too for what the Saints are doing.

Sean Payton is probably the shoo-in, but Eric Mangini gets my vote.

First year on the job, takes a team with:

1. A QB that is on the borderline of being kicked out of the league, and makes him into a top-half of the league QB.

2. No decent RB's whatsoever, and RBBC's them into a top 10 team rushing TD-wise.

3. A defense that was in the bottom half in the league last year for points-against, and moves them into the top half.

Many people predicted the Jets would finish last in their division...Mangini has done a great job with the very limited hand that he's been dealt.

But then again, I'm a homer... :penalty:

Odds:

Sean Peyton: 3 to 2 - New Orleans won all of 3 games last year & were only projected to win 6 - 7 this year. As of now, the Saints have clinched their division & have a good chance at a 1st round bye. Peyton isn't quite the lock he was a few weeks ago, but he's still the favorite. I'd vote for him right now.

Eric Mangini: 2 to 1 - "He's not a genie, he's a man" or so the song goes on local radio in NY. He's done a great job w/average talent. Between Houston, Barlow, Washington, & Blaylock, they really don't have an RB1, or, consequently, a running game. Still, the overall offense isn't bad at all. The Jets haven't played the toughest schedule, but their winning the games they should win.

Marty Schottenheimer: 5 to 2 - The Chargers have lost 2 games by a total of 6 points. They are the best team in the NFL right now. They also were not projected to be the best or even one of the best this year.

Art Shell: 5 to 1 - He tries hard.

Field: 5 to 1

Payton: 1st year coach. 3rd Division Title in Franchise History. Went after Drew. Cut Stallworthless because he had Colston...3 players from bottom of draft....offense # 1 in NFL....Saints still talking BYE in playoffs (lol...that clinches it right there) Excellent play calling all season long, just ask opposing defensive teams about our reverse/double reverse/play action fake reverse formation. :coffee: I think Marty and Mangini and Nolan should get a lot of props, but nobody's done more with less than Payton has.

Myth: Payton was handed a talented but poorly coached team, and with a few little tweaks he turned them into a division champ.

Reality: Payton overhauled the roster, more than half of last year's 53 have been replaced by new faces. He took a chance on a QB with a damaged shoulder and built an offense around him, 2 rookies, and a RB coming off a torn ACL. Only one of the starting LBs was with the team at the start of training camp. He decided to move a good RT to LT, a position Jamaal Brown had never played, and asked him to protect Brees' blindside.

Not one major football or media publication picked the Saints for anything other than 4th place in the NFC South. Certainly Mangini has done a great job, but the Jets have been outscored on the year (280 points for, 282 points against). Jeff Fisher has done a wonderful job of turning the Titans around, but they did start 0-5. And Nolan should get some consideration, but lost games of 0-41, 10-41, and 10-34 (the 10-34 at New Orleans).

Saints fan here and I would go with Mangini. The AFC is a much tougher battleground than the NFC and the Jets have much less talent than the Saints.

Why don't Lovie Smith and Bill Parcells get some mention here?

I think both have done a tremendous job this year.

I don't remember a year when there were this many deserving candidates. Just off the top my head you could make a very good case for

Payton, Marty, Mangini, Fisher, Jaron. All have really turned their teams around....I vote Payton personally.

Don't forget Mangini has also been starting 2 rookies on the O-line in Mangold and Brick Ferguson...and Pennington is still standing. Not too many teams would be starting 2 rookies on the O-line.

My vote would still be for Payton. He has changed the whole mindset of that franchise.

Why don't Lovie Smith and Bill Parcells get some mention here?I think both have done a tremendous job this year.
Because they lack the "turned it around" accomplishment that Payton and Mangini have. Chicago was obviously a contender last season, and Dallas was not that far off. Saints and the Jets were trainwrecks.

Some excellent choices this season. I would think that Payton, Mangini, Fisher, and Jauron would all be decent choices. If Payton is the only one to make the playoffs, that should be an easy selection.

I'd give it to Mangini. He's going to post a winning record in a pretty tough division -- Think about the AFC East right now - There are no outright dogs in that group.
