Coaches on hot seat (1 Viewer)

Maybe I'm just not hearing it or reading it, but why isn't Marvin Lewis' name ever mentioned when coaches on the hot seat are discussed? As far as I can tell, they are one of the most underachieving teams on the field, a mess off the field and terrible on defense, which is supposed to be his specialty.

I'm not sure the team is underachieving as much as it's just not that good. They don't have a defense. I'm not sure why people expect them to win games just because they have an awesome offense. That D is every bit as bad as that O.

That being said, I don't think Marvin continues to really add something. Put it another coach there and that team would probably do about the same. The luster's worn off of Lewis pretty quickly.

The Bengals were a complete mess for a long time before he got there, so, even though the defense has not been as good as most would have thought under him, Lewis is still given a lot of leeway because of the progress the team as a whole has made since his arrival.

Indeed. I think people are forgetting how much of a joke the Bungles franchise had become before Marvin got there. How many times have we heard the word "Bungles" since he arrived? They're a perennial contender now, whereas beforehand we heard that Bungles word every week and any team that lost to them was laughed at.

As a fan, my patience is slightly wearing, and my biggest problem is the break downs on special teams and mental mistakes, which the coach should be responsible for. Not having the first 2 picks of the 2005 draft -Pollack and Thurman really hurts defensively. I don't think it's time to start calling for his head, but like what was said in the earlier post-some of the luster has worn off for sure.

Marvin got the Bengels headed in the right direction, but they need a new coach to take them to the next level. Bill Cowher???

The discussion is valid, but a non-issue. Mike Brown has been loyal to his head coaches and contracts to a fault. Lewis is signed through 2010 and there's almost no way Brown fires him until the end of 2008 at the earliest.

I agree. You have to look at where this franchise was for a long time. Also, players are coming via free agency (and not leaving in hoards) for the first time since I can remember. Maybe you can put a better Xs and Os guy in there, but will he have the same player buy-in? If I was a Bengal fan, I would be pretty pleased with the progress. if nothing else, they are sure fun to watch...and that is what football is, entertainment.

If he is sub .500, he a-ss should be on fire.

He did do some good... but then started messing it all up.

The team might as well be the Cincinnatti Palmers.

The Bengals rise to stardom began the year they drafted Carson Palmer and the third year of Chad Johnson's career, his breakout season. I think that's got a lot more to do with it than Marvin Lewis, but that's just me.

Not to take credit away from Lewis, but the improvement hasn't been just him per se but the fact that Mike Brown FINALLY decided to take his dumb ### out of the picture regarding personnel decisions, hire a scouting team, etc etc. If they don't take the next step this year or next at latest, he should very much be on the hot seat.
