Colonoscopy preparation today..... (1 Viewer)

i am on the schedule for 10/9. 1st rodeo. i am going the pill route. i am pretty good depriving myself of joy, so starting 10/1 i’m going jello, broth, water. i can use to lose 5 lbs before i head to italy for about a month end of year anyway. i look at this as a chance to lose 5 lbs quickly and keep it off. of course, that’s if i live.

I am super overdue for mine. I usually get them every couple of years. The last time I was gonna do it, they upped the prep to the ridicules level it is now, so I bailed. When I had my first one, you drank some stuff the night before and that was that. Five days of prep is seriously unnecessary imo. I think a GI doctor should at least see some poop occasionally. Heck, my plumber has to.

:lmao: you'll lose 2-4 pounds just voiding yourself normally. no need to go liquid for 8 days prior :lmao:

i can't remember if you sent me your slave names for the possible antinori trip. dm me that info and maybe some normal contact info that they might want. ill see if i can set it up now.

FWIW, I fasted starting 2 days prior to the procedure. Nothing besides water, and the prep itself.

My bowel movements cleared almost right away, after Dulcolax (pill), but before the liquid prep.

You’ll lose a few pounds, but it will be mostly poop and prep. Not the foundation for sustained weight loss.

I am actually plus weight probably because ate no fiber for five days and ate more calories due to lack of satiety. Realistically it's a 36 hr fast.

i am in my 1 week countdown period. i have changed over to apple juice, salad and cream of wheat well in advance. maybe a fruit a day. i hope to lose 2 pounds before i go, as i push down towards my goal of 165. that is magic number before i head to italy, since i usually gain a couple of pounds. a forced diet for a week as prep is no biggie. i have my pill prep ready. plunger is arms length. new chains on my flushers. man, i could really use one of my bidets. maybe i will livestream from the toilet sunday

My first is coming up later in October. Anybody have the tl:dr?
It’s no big wup.

Schedule the earliest am appointment, if possible.

Start fasting/clear liquids a full day early - makes clean-out easier.

Take low volume prep. Dulcolax tabs + Miralax in non-red/orange Gatorade.

Plan on a long day/night on the toilet. Moisturize you bunghole with something like Vaseline, or use a bidet to avoid TP trauma.

Conscious sedation is fine - you’re still awake during procedure, but won’t remember being violated.

Have a ride home + post-scope celebratory meal.

i like to schedule mine on a friday and in the morning.

You do these regularly for fun?
Absolutely. Lose about 5 pounds and get a great nap.

In all seriousness, I have ulcerative colitis, and my mom has had colon cancer. So I am a high risk category. I get one every 4 years or so. But I highly recommend them for everyone. This simple procedure can do much to detect early issues in people. So kudos to anyone who goes and does this. It literally can be a life saver.

At what age did you start?

Doing the pills for my scope a week from Thursday. I don't plan to do anything different diet-wise until the cleanse, which I think starts around 6pm the night before. I need to read the directions more closely.

I'm just looking forward to voiding my bowels completely for the first time in 52 years (yes, I'm behind schedule!). Should be "fun". :oldunsure:

My prep information says I should change my diet 5 days out - no nuts, seeds, beans, corn, raw veggies, salads, popcorn, multigrain bread. Basically no fiber. And no fish oil or iron supplements. And then the clear liquids only for the day before.

also, much like arkansas, nothing colored. stay away from anything red, blue or purple.
clear liquids and broth. grab some huggies wipes and reading material. like i do most sundays after watching the jets, plan on spending a lot of time over the toilet.

Have any of you gone the opposite direction and loaded up on all this stuff for a week to give their doctor a nasty surprise?

dinner tonite was apple juice and cream of wheat with banana. i am hungry, but trying to limit what comes out. planning shake shack as my recovery after the doctor gives me the inevitable bad news.

The bad news: at my last routine procedure a few months ago, I walked in to the treatment room and saw that the GI tech/assistant was the mother of one of my patients that I see regularly---just a bit awkward. I thought she may have recused herself and switched to his other treatment room  I would have if I was in her position.

The good news: the GI doc told me I can space out my procedures from every 3 to every 5 years based on my most recent results. :banned:

Turning 50 next year, already had this procedure twice, it's not a big deal and can in fact trigger a health kick/run if you enjoy feeling light prior to the procedure
I would not sweat it, if you're lucky, 1 or 2 really nice nurses will be waiting for you when you wake up.

It's like a wonderful nap, clean bill of health, eat fruits n veggies for a couple days until you cave in to some meat
Lose a few pounds

From what I understand that's an invitation to a premature return to the whole thing. They need to be able to see what's to be seen.

Just turned 46 and my doctor gave me the take home poop test. Did it this morning. I've never really dug around in my own poop. Weird. I feel old.

I just got the "You're 45 now, it's time" speech. The butt stuff department is calling me within the next few days to schedule.

So I had an interesting experience. My cleanse is Wednesday with the procedure on Thursday. I'm on once a week Ozempic (O-O-O Ozem-pic!). It's been great actually, cut my A1C down to the lowest it's been in years with basically no effort whatsoever on my part.

Anyway, the doc's office told me to take my weekly shot (Sunday night) but my GB's wife who is a career GI nurse told me the latest guidance is to stop the medicine a week or even 2 beforehand. I held off last night and called the doc this morning, who reiterated that I should take it. I can see both sides making sense.

I listened to my doctor (albeit took the shot about 8 - 10 hours later than usual this morning).

Talk to the prescribing doctor but glh inhibitors have a half life of a month. Seems unlikely to matter for this purpose a week out.

A. Colon polyps x 2, ascending, biopsy: -Tubular adenoma.
-Additional polypoid mucosa without dysplasia.
B. Colon polyp, sigmoid, biopsy: -Mucosal leiomyoma.
C. Rectum polyp, biopsy: -Benign inflammatory polyp.

looks like i am clean

The worst part about the colonoscopy is the night before when you do the colon cleanse. The actual procedure is a breeze.

Day before my first one, two cups of black coffee (normally use coconut milk) and a mug of fat-free chicken broth so far. Pretty sure I'll be hangry by this afternoon. And of course at 5:00 I get to take the colon blow solution and the fun really begins.
