Breaking News

Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan said today he will return for his senior season, ending weeks of speculation.

"I've decided to come back for my senior year."

"This was one of the most difficult decisions I've had to make," Brennan said. "I made the decision late last night with Coach (June Jones0 and family and friends."

Last fall, after the greatest individual statistical season for a quarterback in UH football history, Brennan was sixth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy.

He broke the national records for touchdown passes and passing efficiency in a season in 2006, and led the country in most other quarterback statistics as UH produced the most points and yards in the country. He was named a third-team All-American and the Warriors matched the school record for wins with an 11-3 mark.

Brennan was advised by the NFL that he is a likely second round pick in the April 28-29 draft in New York. He is generally rated the third best quarterback available in the draft, behind JaMarcus Russell of Louisiana State and Brady Quinn of Notre Dame.

His accuracy as a passer is unquestioned, but at 6-feet-3 and 200 pounds, Brennan is not as big as some of the other top pro quarterback prospects. But many other smaller quarterbacks, such as Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints and Marc Bulger of the St. Louis Rams, enjoy success in the NFL.

Brennan made himself available for the draft on Monday, meeting the league’s deadline of that day. He did so, however, emphasizing that he had 72 hours to pull his name out of the draft, was still undecided, and would make an announcement at a news conference Tuesday.

On Tuesday morning, Brennan postponed the news conference to today.

Dozens of teammates stood outside of the Stan Sheriff Center minutes before Brennan's news conference today.

Slotback Mike Washington held a homemade sign that said "1 more year ... or" on one side and "we fly for Ty" on the other, referring to Tyler Graunke, who is next in line to quarterback the Warriors.

"(Brennan's) a friend first and a teammate second," UH receiver Jason Rivers said before the announcement. "We'd like for him to come back. But in the end I hope he makes the right choice for himself."

Brennan is a graduate of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., where he was teammates with quarterback Matt Leinart, who went on to be a Heisman Trophy winner at USC and was a rookie with the Arizona Cardinals last year.

Brennan recently had discussions with Leinart, who decided to return to USC for his senior season in 2005 rather than enter the NFL Draft after leading the Trojans to a second-consecutive national championship.

Some say Leinart made a mistake by not turning pro after his junior year and that he lost position in the draft.

“What people don’t realize is that Matt’s situation was totally different than mine,” Brennan said last month. “Matt was injured after his junior year, so he wouldn’t have been able to do all the things he needed for the pros to evaluate him.”

Probably a wise decision.

He's a much better prospect that Timmy Chang. Kiper had him ranked as the #3 QB available before he elected to return to school.

:(

I was looking forward to more mock draft "experts" having him in the first round for a couple more months.

This, combined with Troy Smiths freefall after the NC might actually make a few mocks worth reading now.

Yes he is a better prospect than Chang, but my point was to speak about inflated numbers in the Hawaii system. The NFL has been littered with QBs from inflated number programs like Hawaii and BYU.I think that Brennan > Chang, but gauging him just by his performances in Hawaii is not an "apples to apples" comparison to other college prospects.

June Jones said that he was not a system's QB, and that he actually has NFL talent. (FWIW)
He's right. Brennan did have a very high grade for this draft. He has it in writing. It says he could possibly go very early in the 1st and he is nearly guaranteed to be a first rounder. The NFLPA scouts know more than diesel. I am skeptical, but not because of the system. I can account for that. We won't know if this was a good decision until next season. He probably won't and doesn't have to duplicate last year, but I cannot help but think of Omar Jacobs. He could have came out early and been much better off. I doubt Brennan can increase his stock next year, and he runs a severe risk of hurting it. From a pure football standpoint, he probably did the right thing. June is offerring to really amp up the "NFL level" of his mentoring. He's going to turn some play calling over to Colt, and take him to another level on reading and audibles. I hope it works out for the best. When a kid walks away from financial security for the right reason, it's nice to see it pay off.

Yeah, like that chump Steve Young.
Don't forget McMahon.I was thinking more of Ty Detmer and his numbers than anyone. All I'm saying is that mediocre QBs would put up good numbers in the right offense. Both good and great QBs would put up great numbers in similar offenses. The NFL is only interested in great QBs, not good. So you can't tell how a BYU or Hawaii QB will do at the next level solely by his college numbers. If he's got great numbers, you have to put him in the "scout him closely and watch him at the combine" pile. I haven't reviewed Brennan's skillset, so I was only speaking about his stats.

I dug into this a little more. Since 1980, the only first-round QB picks from BYU were Marc Wilson, Jim McMahon, and Steve Young. All had long careers, two won Super Bowls, and one is in the Hall of Fame. That's pretty dang good. No QB from Hawaii has been drafted, including Timmy Chang. What that says to me is that NFL talent scouts can see around the system; they are good at seeing whether a QB is likely to succeed in the NFL, even if he played his college ball in an atypical system.

When I was 22 financial security meant little. If I was a stud QB in Hawaii I just might want to stay another year. It does help June Jones has coached good offenses in the NFL and another year is not the worst thing.

The only thing that will hurt the kid is a devastating injury.

He needs to stay and put on weight if nothing else. A 6'3 190 lb QB is a 2nd day guy. A 6'3 210-215 QB is a first day guy.
Hawaii's reported weights have been way off. They weigh them when they get there and that stays on the bio until they leave. The DE Alana-Francis was laughing about it. It says he's 250. He was 250 when he was a volleyball and high school hoops hero four years ago. He is pushing 300 right now. Brennan said he would be between 210 and 215 for the Combine this year. Brennan is bigger than Croyle who went first day last year with much more copmpetition in the draft. Also when you say he's a second day guy, you are clearly wrong. He had his evaluation. They are inaccurate to a range of about 30 spots. The told Brennan early first, first for sure. The farthest he would have fell this year is late second round. You don't have to like it. You can argue he is a second day talent. But you cannot argue he "is a 2nd day guy" unless you say the NFL's Underclassmen Advisory Board was wrong by more picks than they have ever missed by.
