Report: Colts HC Caldwell may be on hot seat

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports there is belief around the NFL that Colts coach Jim Caldwell is on the hot seat this year.

"You talk to people around the league," said Schefter, and "they think Caldwell could be in trouble after this year." Caldwell is supposed to be an offensive mind, but it took him an 0-3 start and an injury to pull the rug from beneath Kerry Collins. The usage of Dallas Clark seems like it was conceived by a Pop Warner-level game planner. It's clear by now that Peyton Manning not only "made" the Colts' team, he's been largely the basis for Tony Dungy, Bill Polian, and Caldwell's success in Indianapolis. Howard Mudd isn't exactly fielding a strong offensive line in Philly, either.

The guy just stands over there with this blank and glazed look on his face. It seems as if he has no clue what is going on in the field. His decision making (including the SB year) is not just horrendous, but comical. This guy also had a losing record at Wake Forest. That should have been a clue right there.

Having a losing record at Wake Forest should NOT have been a clue. The current coach at Wake is the only guy to NOT have a losing record since the 1950's and even he (Grobe) is only 2 games above .500 right now.

Then maybe we should include that blank bewildered stare of his. You know the look, "what just happened?". Hey #84, did you see what just happened?".

Just goes to show how incredibly awful the Colts are without Manning. From a 10-0 team to a 0-10 team. At least this pathetic season gives them the opportunity to clean house.

I agree but is that on the coaching or on the front office?I'm not saying that Caldwell is great nor am I saying he is horrible

All you have to do is watch his game management to see that he is horrible. He doesn't appear to know what he is doing out there. Even in the good times this was evident.

I agree that Caldwell is clueless but to throw Dungy and Irsay under the bus too is over the top IMO.Signed,

IIRC the owner was in support of KC on twitter. I don't think that's all on Caldwell as Adam implied.

I bet they had issues with team meetings, workouts, and practices too. The entire organization seems lost without Peyton.

I heard a story once how some OL parked their cars near the QBs in the parking lot. Didn't realize they did it, but just how they're built and all. That QB got hurt was off at surgery or rehab or somesuch and some of the OL were asking each other where they should park. That story went on to discuss retired secret service guys protecting their wives or kids as if they were the president and not realizing what they were doing. This was a long time ago, can't remember who wrote it, but I imagine the Colts totally "lost" like this with so many habits that simply are difficult to change.

Agreed.Dungy had great success in turning around the Tampa franchise. Including getting to a NFC championship game, and almost winning it, with Shaun King as his QB.

Unfortunately nothing will be done, but I would like to see Gruden come in. At least he won a super bowl with a Dungy team. :excited:
