"The Colts' next defensive coordinator will reportedly be former Broncos assistant head coach/defensive line Larry Coyer.

Previously at Denver as DC from 2002 - 2006

Any Tampa insight on him.

Interested in Denver insights on Coyer too. From what I remember, he matches his scheme to his personnel, using tons of blitzes in '05, then never blitzing in '06.

I'm all for Caldwell bringing in the guys he believes in, but I'm worried. The continuity in the coaching staff has been crucial to the consistent success this team has enjoyed, and Ron Meeks' defenses produced a lot of turnovers and held their on a team that spent the majority of its salary cap $ on offense. Something tells me Meeks will be missed.

I disagree that Meeks will be missed. Coyer has a good reputation for stopping the run, and I'm satisfied with the current Colts pass rush. I'm sick and tired of teams running up and down the field on the Colts. When teams are able to run on you it limits your possessions. Manning has done a great job in making most of those possessions count, but if the defense can get off the field more often, it can only help the offense. Coyer's last stint as a coordinator was from 2003-06 in Denver, where his defenses ranked 7th, 4th, 2nd, and 12th against the run. New coach Jim Caldwell clearly is trying to upgrade the Colts' rush defense. Coyer learned Tampa 2 schemes with the Bucs, but probably won't use it strictly in Indy. Look for the Colts to make adding interior run stuffers an offseason priority. Jan. 21 - 8:59 pm etSource: WISH-TV (Rotoworld).
