I knew comcast and NFL network were still fighting over $$$$$ but just saw the ticker on NFL network say come MAY 1 comcast will be losing NFL network ....

i find Direct Tv to just be a pain in the ### and my area has lots of trees .

thinking about ATT UVERSE ..wonder if they are effected as well by this expired contract

I swear these companies are just big babies. Instead of finding common ground they take their ball and go home like children. Pathetic.

im willing to bet comcast eventually pays what NFL network wants, which will just mean an increase in price on the consumer (us). only thing i care about is the nfl draft, and this is after that, so weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Goodell mentioned having to work out new deals with networks at the owner's meeting

Having Comcast should be for first problem....
some areas only run comcast, and some apartment complex's have contracts with only comcast or other private cable operators that exclude you from retaining other services. :goodposting:

Goodell is the main villian here in my book. The nfl network raised per sub prices and wanted comcast to take the network out of their sports package.I dont see comcast charging 7 bucks for the nfl, mlb, nhl, nba , college sports and TCM + some others.

U-verse is not part of this. They are a-ok with the NFL Network.

Boy do I know... lived in an apartment for several years that really only Comcast could service. Soooo glad to be done with them. Had almost no problem at all with DirecTv.

I doubt they pay want the NFL currently wants and it will take the NFL cutting their price to get it on. Comcast probably figures that most of the people who really care about the NFL Network are already on DTV so it's not worth jacking up prices for everyone else that doesn't care about football.

yea i dont see alot of sense for the NFL not to be making this work .. comcast has alot of the NFL NETWORK install base .. seems stupid for the nfl not to make this work somehow

and no i dont watch the NFL network all the time . but come NFL SEASON i do like being able to watch the NFL GAMES ... plain and simple

so i guess it will be UVERSE for me .. really ticks me off ....

anyone have uverse ???

We have a smaller, local cable co. (Armstrong). They carry NFLN but don't have the rights to broadcast the live games, which is the only way I would pay for the higher tier that includes it. I've talked to several Armstrong folks and they've said that NFLN just wants way too much money for it to make any sense for Armstrong. I think the NFL has just gotten too greedy.

Getting U-Verse installed next Saturday afternoon. Currently have Comcast and I hate that company more than any other business I have ever dealt with. I am also saving $40 a month with U-verse for the same channels.

here in Tallahassee it is comcast or sat.

I hope you're talking about the NFL here. They've tried in vain to ram a channel down our throats for ESPN money for 8 games a year, and perhaps less if a team in your market plays in the game. Hell, they don't even make the draft exclusive.
In the Boston area they don't even make the couple of times the Patriots have played exclusive. The NFL always shows the game on a local outlet. So they want top $$ from cable companies then give the product away for free.

Why do I think Comcast won't go out of their way to tell me they are dropping this and will continue to charge me for the extended sports package?

they are notifying you with the scroll. The have to notify you 30 days in advance of pulling the signal.

This is all the answer to the last court appearance where Comcast lost. NFLN argued that since COmcast offers their own channels on "regular" tier it was unjust for NFLN to be on a pay tier. It went to a pay tier because Comcast felt the .45 or .35 or whatever NFLN was way too much opposed to other channels that charge like $.20

This is just the final F-You from Comcast to the NFLN.

I canceled when it went to the pay tier. I'm stuck with Comcast right now

the NFL charges more than .45 per sub , its the fourth-most-expensive channel in Comcast's lineup

Yeah, I didn't know the actual number but I knew it was double/triple something else in it's range.

45 cents is the 4th most expensive; they charge $90-100 and it is them you are defending? That's rich.

Considering that Comcast is the top cable company in the US, they better.
Beginning with footage they own, I'm not even sure if NFLN costs them that much compared to other TV stations. I wonder if they can do without. When I had comcast all they did was bicker. The NFL has done this hard stance in negotiations for quite a while to suddenly cave now. Also, I'd imagine they have foreign means to broadcast since they do for the games. Comcast might not be as big to them or as essential as it seems.Which company is the one that also owns MSG? The NFL and them just don't get along.

why wouldnt a company have the right to raise the price for adding a station ? if i want to sell a double cheeseburger, the beef company wont sell me the beef if i want to sell a double burger for more than a single ? thats goofy . if it costs more, they should just choose to add it to a tier for free, or group it in a sports upgrade . if they are purchasing, the nfl should not have any say in what they do with it . i think its wierd nfl net wont let them carry because they want to charge for it ? that is just strange to me . wouldnt it just create some companies to offer for free to encourage switch if some charged ? let it work itself out . 90% of what i watch is nfl football, recordings of nfl football and nfl network . not trying to side with anyone, just trying to speak from a non economic logical view ...

Maybe its just me, but I don't think NFLN is really all that great. Besides showing a small number of games and the scouting combine which is interesting, I don't watch the channel. I feel like they its not as good as it should be.

You think 45 cents (times x number of channels) is a cable companies only expense?

I watch it. Watched/recorded all the combine shows. Watch the Thursday night games. Watch Total Access often. But if it were to go away I wouldn't miss it. Well, maybe I'd miss the Making the squad/team/whatever cheerleader shows. :blackdot:

Why should everyone have to pay for a channel they normally don't want? I pay for NFLN on a sports tier with Comcast and think its very fair. If there was a soap opera channel that wanted to do the same thing then I would be pissed if my cable rates when up because it was added to the lineup. Based on what the NFL did with Sunday ticket, I would play hardball with them to the bitter end. Don't get me wrong, Comcast has a number of problems, but this isn't one of them IMO.

I don't have a problem with everyone paying for the NFLN but the NFL has to be reasonable about their pricing. What they need to do it set a reasonable fee so they can build up the network and later as the network gets more popular they can start raising their fee. They are shooting themselves in the foot by trying to extort money from the cable companies when the network still needs a lot of work. It's difficult to gain a loyal following when the channel isn't even on the air.

NFL Network has the highest cost per rating point - and costs 83 cents per subscriber.

Cable sports networks continue to be the most inefficient for cable operators, when assessing what they pay for those channels versus the overall ratings they receive.

In looking at data obtained by MediaPost–using research from Nielsen Marketbreaks and SNL Kagan–the cost per rating point for cable operators is the highest when it comes to NFL Network, ESPN, Golf Channel and Versus.

NFL Network posts a $0.52 cost per tenth of a household rating point. This calculation comes from examining total day household ratings and the monthly affiliate fees per subscriber. ESPN is right behind at a $0.46 cost per tenth of a household rating point. {…]

ESPN Classic came in at third place (30 cents per tenth of a household rating point). The Golf Channel (28 cents), young-skewing lifestyle network Fuse (27 cents), and Versus (25 cents) were next in line.[...]

TV stations–in particular CBS stations–have been getting about 25 cents a month per subscriber from cable operators, according to executives.

This is the part I don't get - Comcast owns The Golf Channel AND Versus.... so don't they control their own pricing :topcat:

I could be wrong but I think that they have to offer the channel at the same cost to all providers, even if it is themselves.More importantly, I think what is mentioned above is the crux of the NFLN arguement. Funny how, ESPN, ESPN Classic, The Golf Channel and Versus all can be found on Comcast basic cable tier. According to this article they are 4 of the top 5 most expensive per rating point. Comcast has no problem charging all of its customers for these specialty interest channels.

This is not as much about the price per subscriber as it is about the programming tier they are placed on. Just consider - on a per viewer basis, maybe 10% of the subsribers are on the sports tier. That means the NFLN only reaches (and collects fees) on 10% of the subscriber base.

Just curious, but what are the 3 above it?

Give a little to get a little boys, but of course they don't want to part with that Network TV cake.

Hell, they don't even make the draft exclusive.
This is just not true. ESPN charges about 5 times as much as NFLN is asking. ESPN2 charges about 35-40% more than the NFLN.

ESPN isn't much of a specialty since it is watched in most cable households for at least one sport. I don't consider it a niche channel like NFLN, although I think the amount ESPN charges is excessive especially considering the other ESPN channels that companies are required to carry. As for the Golf channel, since it is owned by Comcast then it makes sense that they'd want to charge as much as they can for it so DTV has to pay the same amount as well.

I had U-Verse installed a few weeks ago. I had some interference issues after the first week, and actually didn't have TV for several hours. I was not happy. I called AT&T up, and they sent a repair tech out the following day. The issue was the wires being used. The tech that installed U-Verse used my existing "CAT3" wire, instead of using "CAT5" which is what is supposed to be used. CAT5 wires have more twists in them, which limits interference. U-verse will work on CAT3, but works much better on CAT5. The tech also checked and repaired some splicing issues from my house to the cross-box. I haven't had any problems since. Another thing to remember. If you have 3 TVs and you want the ability to watch TV on all of them, you're going to need a box for each one ($7 per box a month). Overall, I'm very pleased with the service. The coolest feature is being able to watch recorded shows on any TV in the house.
