Comic books and graphic novels discussion thread (1 Viewer)

If there’s another one of these I apologize.

I wanted to get a discussion thread going. I have suscribed to Marvel Unlimited, DC Universe, and Kindle Comixology on my phone and I’m starting to read comic books for the first time in 30 years. There is a ton of great material: it’s a golden age these days IMO.

Among my favorites:

1. The Punisher by Garth Ennis

2. Alias by David Michael Bendis (this is the Jessica Jones comic).

3. Y: The Last Man

Any recommendations? Thoughts?

It's hard to go wrong with the classics. Superman, Spiderman, Batman, Iron Man, The Tick, Beavis and Butthead...

Some of the 80s-90s X-Men stuff is good although I haven't re-read any to see how they've aged.

It is good to start a new one! The last thread on this topic is 15 years old

I copied this from the other thread. I need to update it but this is a good starting point

I'm a huge comic book fan and collector but most of that is pre 1995. Some of my favorite runs are,
- Frank Miller Daredevil (158-191)
So there are some great Daredevil runs that I’ve been reading that rival the Frank Miller ones. Especially Daredevil Vol 2. 26-81. The story and art are amazing. After watching the TV show I think a lot of it is based on this run.

Preacher is another Ennis series from the 90s. I haven’t read it yet but it’s available on the DC app. That Punisher series is so good I’m going to have to read his other stuff.

He also wrote The Boys (which the series is based on.)

I have Marvel Unlimited and DC infinite as well. I need to get back to actually using them. For Marvel i started with FF #1 and am a couple years into the Marvel universe. It's a slog reading these old comics. Been a couple years and need to get back into. Also have a few shelves full of unread graphic novels from Image and Vertigo though all the Vertigo stuff is available in the DC app.

Kravens Last Hunt (1987) which ran across three different Spider-Man titles (Amazing, Web of and Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man) was pretty great.

I just closed up my family home and boxed up my childhood coin collection, record collection (which I sold), and comic book collection.

Comic books are mostly late 70s to 80, 81. Bunch of Daredevils, Savage Sword of Conan, Kazar the Savage (which I have no memory of), The Spirit and some random including a couple years subscription to The Dragon (D&D gamers mag.

Don't think I'm going to get much for these.

Collected in my youth, got back into it in my 30s for a while.

As an adult I enjoyed New Avengers leading all the way through to Secret Wars 2. That sounds like it is going to be a spoiler for the movies.

Hulk was pretty good 2005 - 2010 or so. He was never a character I read in my youth but Planet Hulk, World War Hulk and Red Hulk were all great.

My most recent ongoing project has been The Swede - a graphic novel series featuring an assassin who prefers to use his hands. He thinks out of the box. I'm also a big fan of the late Darwyn Cooke's work, especially on the hunter series. It influenced my over all look on the books. thekillerswede.com

The Invincible comics are excellent, and better still completely finished so you don't need to worry about keeping up.

They are from image comics so I'm not sure if you can get it via your existing subscriptions but they sell the compendiums on Amazon and there are ways to read it virtually as well.

Got my son into comics and instead of starting from the beginning, he went with Batman: Year One and then into the Long Halloween. He skipped over to the Dark Knight Returns because he had watched the animated movie.

I'm trying not to influence him too much but I'm steering him into some of the bigger arcs like Infinite Crisis, Lantern Wars etc.

Y the last man was a great story that i really enjoyed. They tried to do a TV show of it.. it was terrible and they only got 1 season.

I really wanted to like the Boys comic book since i love the show.. but i only made it about 20 issues.

Preacher however was a better comic and i couldn't really get into the show.

Read and collected some Marvel comics in 70s and 80s. Some of my favorite runs and/or limited series:

Wolverine 1-4, limited series, Frank Miller, 1982
Ronin 1-6, limited series, Frank Miller, 1983 (DC Comics)
Contest of Champions, 1982 (actually sucked, but somewhat significant)
Thor 337-340, the initial Beta Ray Bill arc
X-men 139/140, battle with Wendigo
X-men 126-128, battle with Proteus (freaking creepy)
X-men 135-137, wrapping up the Phoenix story line
Alpha Flight 1-12, wrapping up the initial Vindicator story line
Daredevil 168-181 (Frank Miller's Elektra run)
Spiderman 259/260 (rollicking fight with Hobgoblin)

I sold my collection in 2016. The four jewels were:
Hulk 181 (CGC 7.5)
Giant-Size X-men #1 (CGC 9.0)
X-men #94 (CGC 8.5)
X-men #101 (CGC 9.6)
All have since more than doubled in value. I regret selling them.

I collected all X-men from 94 to about 300. I doubt I read any from 200 onwards, just kept collecting and bagging them.

Also found Wolverine 1-4 and a bunch of other stuff

Where/how should I sell these? eBay sounds like a PITA.
