Commissioner Dilemma (1 Viewer)

I'm the commish of a 14 team, $50 buy-in keeper league using MFL. Before the draft, I instructed owners to type "STOP" in the chat window if their pick got messed up. Every year, someone gets the wrong guy in the draft queue and accidentally drafts them. Well, last night, round 14, someone drafts Bo Ruud. The owner with the next pick types, "wasn't he already picked?". I type "no, barrett was. it's his brother." He says, "should i wait?" I say, "I am hesitant to give a do-over in this situation." The owner who selected Ruud IMed me that he "expects the strict policy to continue." I respond, "it will"

Move ahead to round 18, Hazmah Abdullah gets drafted. The owner types "stop". A couple more picks get made, then the draft is stopped. I ask who he wanted. He wanted "Stewart Bradley." I say, "he's out for the year, but you can have him." The change gets made.

Owner 1 throws a little bit of a hissy, nothing major. But I get the feeling he is a little bit put out with my decision.

My reasoning is this: The owner who drafted Bo Ruud made a conscious decision to draft said player. It wasn't some glitch in the system where he had the wrong guy in the queue. He meant to draft Bo Ruud. He just wasn't getting the stud LB he thought he was getting.

So I come to the pool for a critique of how I handled this. Does the owner who drafted Bo Ruud have a legit complaint?

It's a tough call, but generally if a guy realizes an obvious error right away, I would allow him to fix it. But it has to be an obvious error. A good example would be drafting Steve Smith of the Giants in the second when the guy quickly says he meant the Carolina WR.

The guy has to realize his mistake reasonably quickly though, within a couple more picks, not a half a round or more.

ETA: If the guy realized his Bo/Barret mistake quickly...then yes, I'd say he has a legit complaint.

I don't think he realized until another owner spoke up. He legitimately thought he was drafting the stud linebacker.

If you pick him, he's yours. You can always drop/add later if you screwed up. Can't slow the draft down for 1 owner sleeping at the wheel.

Does that matter? The mistake was noted almost immediately. The next owner was hesitant to pick because he knew the guy made an error. It's one thing when a guy drafts Ronnie Brown at pick #4, it's another when they pick a guy 10 rounds or more before he should go. If this were a big money, high competitive league of sharks, I might be more inclined to go the strict route, but I'd also have more clarity in my rules. In a friendly, low money league, your rule is adequate, but (IMO) should be interpreted fairly loosely.

Don't play mind Cop (he meant this, but this other guy meant this in my post pick interview so they are different)

Let picks stand

Let people stop and repick from what has not been picked.

In your league, I would personally let people repick whenever from what hasn't been picked or

EASY Button - Use draft software (Yahoo online draft) that doesn't allow it.

Let your league decide well before the draft.

Get it together, hope the tech is perfect, or you're stuck. Waivers and next year buddy.
