How do you run your live in-home drafts?

I've been the commish for a league the past 4 years and we've never used any kind of draftboard for everyone to see.

This year I'm planning to set up a projector in the middle of my living room and use a laptop to show who's been taken and in what round.

What's the easiest way to go about this?

I would like to use excel, but I don't want to type every single players full name (along with their team) the whole time. Is there a way to store all NFL players names in Excel so that I would just have to type the first 3 letters of their name and it would auto fill? I was thinking I can upload all NFL players' names in each column that there is a FF coach, and then "hide" those rows. Would this work?

Any other suggestions for a draft format would be much appreciated.

TIA

In my quest to make our draft day a fun experience I tried fandraft software once. I liked it and it was fun. The next year I created a draftboard on Excel and connected it to my laptop. I thought that it was a good idea; I took a list of players and then named each cell with a 4 letter acronym for each player (example LTOM = Tomlinson). So as the draft progessed I would type in the cell of the player that was taken (I had my own cheat sheet of acronyms) and off we went. It was fun, but very time consuming. Before the laptops we used the paper draftboards with stickers, very easy. What I would recommend after spending 12 years as a commish and receiving the feedback from the owners in my league is to go with a paper draft board. They are great and highly visible to everyone in the league. It speeds up the league, but more importantly it frees up time for me (the commish).Just my :02:

We used a dry-erase board in one of my other leagues last year and it just seemed like a hassle for everyone to walk up and write their picks... it got to a point where we nominated one person to write the picks for an entire round and everone rotated in.I was planning to have two laptops in front of me... one connected to the projector and the other for me to use for my draft. Is this similar to your setup for the draft board you created? What was so time consuming with using excel and a laptop?

The time consuming part was related to typing in the acronyms. First I would have to look them up, then type them, then update my DD and then before I knew it I would be looking up another acronymn.I don't think that it's too much to ask the owners to get up an put a sticker on the board. If you are really concerned about it, hire a topless waitress to do it for you.

i am doing my first offline/live draft this season... We are having it at a local bar... Do I need to put up some kind of board or can I just tell people to keep track of the draft on sheets I pass out. I just dont know if we will have room for a big board....but I also dont want to run into.."T. Henry drafted yet?"..."Yes"..."How about Deuce?"..."Yes"...."What about LT?"...."yes". So what do you all think my best option is if I decide not to use a big board?

We've used the FREE version of the DD for a couple of years with a projector. Speeds everything up.

We just leave the preseason rankings/projections in there as they are outdated by draft day, but you can adjust the rankings if you want or delete all projections and I believe it lists ths players alphabetically.

Simplest. Take one/two sheets of poster board and put them on a table. Mark out the grids ahead of time for teams and picks per round. Everyone fills in their own picks.

We use a roll of butcher paper and tape it to a large wall in The War Room. We mark out the grid the night before with a sharpie and owners take turns filling in the names on draft day. Usually teams with co-owners get the menial labor jobs, writing the names on the draft board, handling the on-line for the owners who are not there etc.

We don't use a board, everyone keeps track on their sheets.
I am hoping that will work out well. I would rather not mess with big sheets at a sports bar. how has that gone for you in the past. Do people do a good job of keeping track of who has been drafted??? I did just take a look at the fandraft demo and it is pretty cool looking though... But i wouldnt want that on the same computer as my DD!!

anybody have any pre-made excel sheets that could be used for a draft??!! I am not lazy, but why re-invent the wheel!!!! 12 team league!

Been doing it the same way for 10 years. Hang 12 poster boards side by side up on the wall (or 2 walls). Write in the abbreviations for all the position slots. Get a couple of thick magic markers and leave them in a central location.

Whenever an owner's pick comes up... he walks up, grabs a marker and writes his pick on his individual poster board.

That way, when an owner makes a terrible pick... everyone can insult him and throw things at him the entire trip back to his seat.

A projector and a laptop seems like overkill unless you are running an auction and you need the program to calculate dollars spent/remaining. For a regular draft just use a draft board. If someone chooses a player that has already been drafted they lose their turn. Simple.

pm sent...

Also I think I am going to do the following...

1.) excel draft board...very simple.. I will give each owner a copy, but also have mine as the MASTER COPY

2.) individual sheet they can write their teams on

3.) list of top players in alphabetical order

and thats about it...from there, they are on thier own!

I bought a large presentation board at Staples a few years ago. I cover it with white paper (bought a large roll that covers it in two passes) and I draw in the grid with a Sharpie. Then I use the VBD Excel sheet to create labels for all the top players, printing each position in a different color. Then on draft day one of the owners' girlfriends puts the stickers on the board when each person makes their selection.

you should definitely check out fandraft:

www.fandraft.com

I'm trying it this year for the first time. Will use my work projector connected to my laptop.

You just cross off players when they're drafted, how hard is that? We'd rather not waste time walking up and writing players on a board or updating a computer. It keeps things moving and works for us.

Wanted to try fandraft this year, but we draft out on my deck, and if it is fairly sunny, was worried that it wouldn't project well enough to read.

Sticking with paper draft board and labels for now...has worked well for the last 8-9 years.

First year doing a live draft for the league I commish. The site we use has a horrible draft room, so we're going with a live draft. I'll have a white board up front for everybody to see. I was planning on just writing everyone's pick on the board, using different colors for each position. We have two guys out of town, they'll be up on chat/conference call.

Side note. Anybody think 90 secs per pick is bad for a live draft?

If you go to Fantasy Football League Manager (fflm.com) and download the league software (it's free until week 4 of the season), you can create Avery Labels to use for the draft that are exactly like what CBS sends with their draft kit. It looks like you can import MFL league data into the program also, if that's what you are using.

We get the CBS draft kit and I customize the big grid they send with each team and the differenct positions. Works out pretty well with the stickers, and someone who sits close to the board usually puts the names up, or if the draft is at the house of someone with kids, sometimes they help out.

What I was thinking, was uploading a list of ALL NFL players into excel and then list them in EACH column (12 teams, 12 columns). So you'd have 12 columns with ~1700 rows filled with every single player in the NFL.Once this is done, you "hide" those rows so that they are not visible. Then create your draft template (team names, round #) beginning with the first available row following the "hidden" rows.If done correctly, all you would have to do is type in "Toml" and LT's name and will autofill. It sounds like a lot of work, but once it's set up, it should be smooth sailing.Anyone ever try this?

Too much trouble. If you really want to do it with the names, Why not just copy/paste from a depth chart or alphabetical list of players by position? Seems like less work. How many Johnsons/Smiths/Jones, etc do you think there are which would defeat the autofill?

Ive used the projector thing with an excel spreadsheet with the teams name on it. then i would pick a color for the cells of whatever draft position was drafted. It really didnt take that much time to type in "Tomlinson" and color coordinate the cell. It worked out fine. If you want the excel spreadsheet i used send me a PM. It was for a 10 team league using 18 rounds.

Totally unnecessary to do all that work. What I did on mine was put together a single list of players (using my projection spreadsheet, which is based on the FBG VBD App) on a separate sheet. With that done, you do the following steps to create a drop-down box that lets you select the player that gets picked:Highlight the list of players and name the rangeOn the cell in your draft pick sheet, go to Data...ValidationOn the "Settings" tab, under "Allow:", select "List"Under "Source:" type =Range Name (the one you named in the first step)Copy to each cell where you want the list.ETA: My list has positions and teams, so there's no confusion about which Chris Henry or Steve Smith it is.

pay 20 bucks for a board and stickers, put it in the doorway. Pick, winner gets the board at the next draft a year later.

voila. draftboard and championship trophy all in 1

so everybody that is using excel sheets...you (as the commissioner) just enter the picks for everybody after they call them out?? Or do they enter their own picks? I would think an endless cycle of people coming up to the laptop would be a pain...

PM me, have a basic one that has worked well. Also has a feature for auctions where you enter the player's name and amount paid for and it auto-detracts from your total amt of money left to spend. Also has a lot of players (not some of the "lesser" ones) on an alphabetized list which includes bye weeks. I think Excel 97 or greater can open it.

The big board is a pita, imo. In my 12 team league, we have a clipboard that we pass around where everyone writes down their pick when it's their turn. This is much faster than walking up to a board and putting down your pick. In my 16 team league, the commish and others take turns entering the picks on a laptop. In both leagues most people do a pretty good job of crossing out who's been drafted.

We don't even sit in draft order in either league. In the 16 teamer, we've got dudes who set up camp in the living room and kitchen. 12 teamer we do at a bar and everyone sits wherever they want at the table.

Occasionally you'll get the knucklehead who tries to take someone who's already been picked, and they get heckled mercilessly. It's no big deal.

Actually, rather than ~1700 players, it would be more like half of that (I included both Off and Def players initially). You should be able to put the team name in front of the player's name (ex. SD Tomlinson, Ladanian). It sounds like a lot of work, but is it really? Once you upload all of the players into one column, you just copy and paste that in the next 11 columns (12 team league). The dropdown menu idea sounds good, but then it seems like a lot of work to get set up.I'll give it a shot tonight and see how it turns out... will report back.

LOL, we've had a projector for years and this will be the first WITHOUT it. It works pretty good but make sure you have a suitable area to project onto. It needs to be flat and white. We used the wall most years but the actual projector screen would be money. As long as you get the resolution right it will be cool. The reason we are switching to the card board draft board this year is it was kind of a hassle to obtain/borrow the projector each year. Also, it's nervewracking to find the correct name. Especially in later rounds, and we only draft 16 rounds. PITA for one person to enter in the names AND run their own team's draft. The best years were when my Brother in Law would hang with us. He's not a FF guy but friends with about half the league. Also an IT guy. So he would make sure all laptops were connected and enter the names for us. Again, entering all names and running your team's draft is not that fun.All that being said, it's worth a try. Especially if you are going to use DD as suggested by another poster. DD is rather intuitive in looking up players so it may work better than the Sportsline Draft Room that we were using.... :X

did the excel spread sheet via a cut and paste. List the top 50 or 75 players at every postion and gave the list to all the managers. People could then keep tracki on their own and when you can't find players in the late rounds of the draft you could just call out the number. Worked fine.

Did the big draft board last year with all the players printed out on another board. The managers had to remove the name from one board and then place it on the other. We use a 2 minute timer and it worked well. The best part is that I leave the board up for a few days so I can study it and put it into an excel sheet so I can now get a track on how the other managers draft.

Agreed. For only $2 or $3 extra bucks per owner you avoid all of the unnecessary work and headaches. Seems like a no brainer.

The drop down list in Excel is the way to go. I've used it for several years in my auction draft and it's hella easy. I project the board on the wall and enter each player as they are drafted.

My 16 team league uses the live draft room and a projector. I am logged in as commish. People who can't make the drive log in to the draft room and make their picks. Works out fine. Also, as commish, I don't have to go in and add all the picks later. Saves me a couple of hours.

I have one. It's set for 12 teams and 16 rounds, but easily adjusted to your rounds and teams. It uses drop down lists and pulls up player, team, bye week and position. PM me and I can send it to you.

PM sent, mwaldo.

Although, I just spent about 20 minutes trying to create one myself. It was REALLY easy!

I'm not sure if my way was the most efficient, but it's exactly how I expected it to be.

All I need to do is type the first 4 or so letters of the players last name, and if it's something not too common, then it will autofill and I just hit enter. BTW, I've got it formatted so that it displays LAST, FIRST - TM/BYE

If, for example, the last name was "williams" and I don't feel like punching in any of the letters in their name, I just click on the cell for that draft spot and a drop down menu will bring up all available players (alphabetized).

I can't imagine how this would be time-consuming at all... but we'll see how it goes.

We go with the board from CBS in a couple of leagues. To handle the sticker thing...owners are assigned a position and they hang on to those stickers. When a player is drafted, or won in a bid, that owner is responsible for giving me the sticker, and I put it up. I am able to keep things moving while this is going on. For the auction, at the end of every round or two, each owner is responsible for tallying up their bids. Additionally, two other owners are selected to double check all math. The rest of us are getting more drinks and food. Works for us.

I have found that when an owner gets fancy with the laptop and projection, it tends to slow things down. Just my experience.
