Commissioners, I kicked an owner out of a money league. Was I right or (1 Viewer)

12 team money league, redraft. fair amount of money to get in. A certain team decided their team sucked and since it was decimated by injuries they gave up around week 7-8. Started leaving inactive players in lineup with active players on bench. I warned the owner to set a proper line up and offer to help set line up if they were unable to timely. I also asked if they were quitting and if they wanted me to find a replacement. They said it was a mistake and they were not quitting.

The behavior continued only now they are dropping players(dead players) from roster and not replacing them. leaving open spots on roster and still starting inactive players with active players on bench, I contacted owner again and was told to chill out they were busy with more important things.

I let the owner know his actions were detrimental to the league, his actions were altering outcomes of matchups (potentially) and could be costing other teams money. I told him if he had time to argue with me and time to drop players then he had time to set a line up. He still took no action leading up to gametime. SO 1 hr prior to noon kick off, I notified the owner he was out of the league and I was replacing him. He obviously didnt care about the league or other owners.

We have prepaid transaction in this league and he had a positive balance for WW pick ups

This owners said I have no right to kick him out and he expects a full refund... I of course disagree

I would appreciate sight and comment pro or con

How does your league's bylaws handle this? How will you handle having one less team for the next few weeks? Will you set lineups for the owner? Is that fair to the teams that did not get free wins while the owner was starting inactive players?

Agree that not replacing them is sketchy, but you can't fault the guy for dropping players that have died.

You need to have rules that cover this situation. If you don't and this was just a judgment call, he is going to feel justified in complaining. I think you did the right thing but you left yourself open to a huge headache by not having thorough rules.

It's not that sketchy when he's forced to pay actual cash to add crappy players that won't help him win.

Refund him the positive balance and find a more reliable owner.

I did not want to set line ups or make transaction so I recruited someone to take the team over, mostly a lost cause but mathematically still alive. Our bylaws allow the commissioner to set a line if an owner leaves an active player on the bench ( usually a mistake). Other than that the bylaws allow the commissioner to make decisions that are in the best interest of the league, Abandonment isnt specifically covered. It was a hard decision and one I didnt want to make. but felt I had to for the integrity of the league

Rules require a full roster

That's a hard rule there. Enforce it once, and the league is correct to expect you to always enforce it. Anything less is unfair. Plus, commish could be called out for what players he elects to start.

rarely happens, usually it gets brought to my attention before a game and I will contact owner or insert highest ranked based on projections, havent actually ever made a change after the fact, that would be a tough one

Pretty damn absurd for him to complain about not getting a refund after he gave up on his team anyway. I'm assuming he's well out of the playoff hunt? That's dead money anyway.

Yep. In a case like that, instead of kicking him out, just tell him that, as the commish, you will take over setting his lineups for him.

"For the best interest of the league" certainly covers this. There is no perfect answer. Some teams probably got free wins. Others may not get the same benefit now. That's tough either way.

I personally don't like the ability to change lineups, but it falls under the same umbrella that booting the owner does. I agree with another poster who said that if you do have this rule, you must follow it always. For things of this nature, I have specified that a 3rd party ranking (for example, fantasypros.com's weekly rankings) will be used to determine which players to put into the lineup from the bench. Including something along those lines in the bylaws frees you from any criticism in regards to the player inserted.

Not completely clear on the drops/without adds issue. If the league bylaws require a full roster, and each add costs (real) money, then the owner should be docked for each pickup that he should have made. Whatever funds bidding funds remain after (any needed deductions) should be returned to him.

His league dues should not be refunded.

As I said earlier I recruited someone to handle the team, I did not want to set line up or make roster moves for the team. The team is MOSTLY DEAD. Still mathematically alive because his division sucks. He is in last place and the only game he has won since week 2 is the first game after he was kicked out. Sad thing is he had a descent foundation and could have had a strong team had he managed the roster

The fact is if he has been having issues that havnt let him play, then say it and let the league know you still want to play, maybe even get someone to run the team.

My league commish wouldnt think of doing this though, because we would be pissed off that he didnt bring it to us, we basically need a 2/3 vote to remove an owner.

But its just a good move by you. Perhaps extend an olive branch and expose the situation and let him stay, Going forward any long term inactivity will be considered Team Abandonment nothing personal but this is a league that requires everyone to participate."

Get the 2 most influential guys in you league behind you.
