Favre vs. Marino as reported by Cliff Christl, JSOnline

With 14 pass completions Sunday, Brett Favre will break Dan Marino's record for most career completions. At this point, Marino has 263 more attempts. But their statistics are surprisingly similar. The biggest difference is that Marino averaged 7.3 yards per attempt; Favre has averaged 7 yards per attempt.

Here are the stats:

............. Att. ... Comp..... Pct..... Yds... TD.... Int.... Rating

Marino 8,358... 4,967... 59.4... 61,361... 420... 252... 86.4

Favre 8,095... 4,954... 61.2... 56,756... 413... 267... 85.6

Cool...

...but I don't think anybody is arguing that Favre does not belong in Marino's class. Just like Marino, Favre will be a first-ballot HOF'er.

Keep munchin' the popcorn as you watch Favre close in and pass the completion mark...and soon the TD mark....it'll be great to watch.
Do you live under a rock?Hint: I'm known as a big supporter of Favre here and the munchin' the popcorn was a sign of waiting for the Favre Hating Clan to come out from hiding to bash him.

FlaVVed is definitely not a Favre "hater". ;)

There is no way to compare Favre and Marino except by all-time statistics reached in their career.

They are both first-ballot HOF'ers.

They are two of the all-time greatest NFL QBs.

After that, the similarities end.

I'm not a Favre hater, and Y/A is far from the be-all, end-all of QB statistics...but I was surprised to learn that Favre's best season in Y/A ranks as the 236th best (min: 200att) all time. Even more surprising is Marino only has ONE season in the top 235 himself, the 20th best season (1984). Steve Young has six, Manning has three, Stabler has three and Montana has two. (There are other guys with multiples, those are just the guys I picked off the top of my head).

Hint: My comment re. munching popcorn was an invitation, not an attack. Don't be so sensitive Mary.

Favre needs how many TDs in the final 3 weeks?
7 to tie, 8 to pass Marino
Earlier in the year Favre was on a good pace to break it, but now it's looking like he'll need to come back to do it. Det, Min and Chi... Two good matchups and one I wouldn't expect much in. 7 will be tough.
Well, that Week 17 matchup will be interesting against Chicago. My guess is Chicago has everything pretty much wrapped up as far as playoffs go. So, if Favre needs like one or two TDs to break the record, do Chicago starters play the whole game? Do some guys rest? My feeling is that won't be a full strength Chicago team, but you never know.

and Tom Brady has 3. So he's better than both of them huh?
I think there's an implied "everything else being equal" then you go to rings. Not straight to rings.

Yeah, good point.

Let's not forget that Favre doesn't know when to quit
Yep, at least least Marino knew when to quit...and he called it "The Playoffs". :goodposting:
Marino's final 10 years in the league...5 playoff wins, 7 playoff lossesFavre last 10 years in the league...4 playoff wins, 6 playoff lossesNeither guy did much of anything (or had much of a supporting cast) on that front in the 2nd part of their careers. Their numbers are ridiculously similar in many, many areas.

I wonder if their ring size is similar? Oh well, guess it doesn't matter for one of 'em....
