The last Saturday of the Pershing Square concert series is X, which I've never heard of but they are getting the most hype of all the acts. They are being billed as the best punk band to come out of LA. Do people here know them? Should I be checking them out?

Just got home from seeing Queen+Adam Lambert.  Holy Christ, Brian May and Roger Taylor still have it in their 70's, Rock Gods indeed.  Adam Lambert did a fantastic job as well.  He is a flamboyant performer and outstanding singer, and totally understands his role in this band.

Highly Recommend seeing them.  Seeing and hearing that famed guitar, Brian May's Red Special, in person, was incredible.

Ahhh, I do know a song from X! Not surprisingly given where I live, it's Los Angeles.

I only saw about 3 songs because I was working. I remember seeing them perform "Beds are Burning" for sure. I was kind of jaded working at Atlantic/Elektra/Warner Records. I saw bands all the time, but that was the first time I saw a band playing in the streets like that. It drew a crowd.  Definitely something that was unique.

You saw half of it, then.  They have it out as a video - Black Rain Falls.  It isn't their best performance (some of their concerts in Oz from the early 80s were insane), but it is definitely their most iconic.

Just got tickets for Peter Hook and the Light June 4, 2018 (yes 2018) in St. Pete.  They're playing all of Joy Division and New Order's Substance albums.  I saw New Order in 1989 when the band was in their prime. I am a huge Joy Division fan.

FYI, the greatest band on the planet is playing their 3rd gig of a thirteen night residency at Madison Square Garden tonight. Very likely they are playing all 13 shows without a repeat. Very unusual set lists (a capella Strawberry Fields opener last night, for instance). You have until early August to catch Phish in their prime so if you are anywhere near NYC, I encourage you to make the trip.

Two shows this past weekend on opposite sides of the "rock" canon at the local shed.  If you go when they show up in your town, have a good time.

First up was the latest pairing of Chicago with The Doobie Brothers.  The Doobies led off and other than some well timed obscure songs that timed out nice for a bathroom run from the lawn, a solid set from them.  This year being the first without an "all hands on deck encore", all of the Doobies' hit material made it's way into the main set which was a nice change.  Chicago was next and their somewhat sleepy opening set led to a strong finish.  The latest Peter Cetera replacement on bass looks just like Owen Wilson, albeit with a straight nose.  Kid has some serious pipes though.

Next night was OneRepublic with Fitz and the Tantrums and James Arthur in support.  Never heard of the opener, but I guess Bea's son won some type of singing competition in the U.K.  But the tweens and teens near us had heard of him and they let everyone know it.  Fitz and the Tantrums were solid, although hearing of a great live set in anticipation, it never really did materialize.  Maybe it was the humidity, as OneRepublic noted during their set that returning nearly three years since their last show at the shed, they asked for the most humid day and they got it.  OneRepublic was pretty good as well, although not as good as the aforementioned show three years ago.  Played all the hits and some of the stuff Ryan Tepper has written for other artists.  On a hot night, we got the standard set list.

Another show postponed.  First Eric Clapton rescheduled until a freakin' Monday night in September and today Friday's Hall and Oates/Tears for Fears concert announced postponed indefinitely.  Sucks.  May catch Robert Cray instead at the Canyon since the night is free now.

It was clear that the vast majority of the crowd did not know Cloud Nothings music and were expecting a lighter, poppier opener akin to New Pornographers.  People looked terrified when they opened with "Now Hear In" and it kinda scattered the crowd save for the handful of people like me who were excited to see them.

The show was pretty sparsely attended overall, sadly.  I guess there isn't much overlap between their fanbases, but it was perfect for me.  One of my favorite bands of all-time combined with one of my favorite bands of the last 3-4 years, back-to-back.

Two shows this weekend with my 13-year old boy:

- Saturday at Target Field is Florida Georgia Line, w/ Nelly, Backstreet Boys and Chris Lane. I expect the music to be fun and the eye candy to be outstanding. He likes country music and knows some Nelly, so this should be fun.

- Sunday night at US Bank Stadium is G'n'R. He has been looking forward to this since it was announced. I have been too.

Bonus content:

- The whole fam will be in New Orleans in a couple of weeks (hello McClure's!) and we'll go see Kermit Ruffins play at the Little Gem. He's awesome. Will also see the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Always great.

- On our way to New Orleans we may see Bruno Mars in Lincoln. We will be there the night he is at Pinnacle Bank Arena - we'll see.

Just had a hell of a lot of fun this last weekend - Friday night at Denver Botanic Gardens with The Mavericks. A killer dance party - Raul sang a beautiful Blue Bayou and Neil Young's Harvest Moon. Then they cranked into C'est La Vie and turned it into a non stop party of their big hits. They are an American Treasure - they'll have a special on PBS where they go to Havana on Oct 6th 

Next up was Saturday and Sunday at Red Rocks for the Tedeschi Trucks Band Wheels of Soul extravagana with Hot Tuna and The Wood Brothers(my 6th year of going to this). Both nights incredible. Several sit ins with all the bands - Special Guest on Saturday was John Medeski on keyboards who brought a high energy jamming funk to the proceedings. Hightlights were a great Bound for Glory and a Wing's Let Me Roll It encore with the Wood Brothers. Also did 3/5 of a Mile in 10 seconds from Surrealistic Pillow with Jack and Jorma - Susan killed it on the Marty Balin lyrics.

Sunday special guest was John Bell from Widespread - they did Delta Lady that was incredible. Ended with a Whipping Post and then Statesboro Blues on the encore. Wood Brothers came out and did a Sweet Virginia with TTB. Another highlight was Susan playing the Bobby Blue Bland I Pity the Fool - she came out to edge of stage and played guitar behind her head in tribute to Buddy Guy's birthday. Also another sit in from Sunday had Zac Brown (fresh off Coors Field show Saturday) play with Wood Brothers for a song

All of this at Red Rocks - We had VIP 5th row so it was like having them in your living room. They are without a doubt the best Band in the world today. Go see these guys. 

When I die I'm going to figure out how my spirit can make it's way there to hang out - so if you want to reach me in the afterlife - start there.

Yeah, I loved Slip, too. I hung out with hardcore kids who liked really hardcore SxE stuff, and Quicksand always got much respect and was a nice compromise when it came to group listening, though there was no real compromise on my end as I loved the hell out of them.

They do, but each of the last three albums with Sergio were terrific.

I played in a hardcore band with a bunch of younger skater straightedge kids that were way into Gorilla Biscuits, so I was kind of prepared for Quicksand, didn't have to stumble into them.  I've had "Head to Wall" running through my head ever since I saw your post.

I'm a much more mainstream music guy. A lot of the artists people are mentioning I've never heard of nor would I attend. Nothing wrong with them - just not my style.

This year - Train w/ Natasha Bedingfield and O.A.R., One Republic w/ James Arthur and Fitz and the Tantrums, Styx w/ Don Felder and REO Speedwagon, Chicago w/ The Doobie Brothers, Barenaked Ladies, and upcoming - Daughtry and Nickleback, and later Matchbox 20 w/ Counting Crows.

Live Nation had this one day earlier this year when a whole bunch of concerts were $20 each and the wife and I loaded up on a bunch.

One Republic in particular is extremely good. Ryan Tedder has a great voice and he has written some major hits for others, some of which sang himself  as part of their show. Good stuff.

This. Ed has been great solo and I have to believe the band will bring it now that they're together again. Live is actually opening for G'n'R for a few dates...super bummed to not get that opener and instead got the Deftones. I get that many like the Deftones but they aren't my thing. I was talking to a guy during the Deftones set pre-G'n'R and he had a pretty funny line. He basically said, "You don't ever have to go to a Deftones concert, because they are bound to open for someone you're actually going to see".

They've been ahead of their time for 17 years and have forged a sound that is entirely unique in the realm of hard rock/metal. They're just too edgy to ever totally break through with mainstream audiences and seem destined to be the band that never had mega-success but will be mentioned as an influence for decades after they've gone.

Saw Brett Young/Kelsie Balerini/Lady Antebellum on Sunday at Merriweather Post Pavilion. I'd forgotten what a great venue that is to see concerts, easy free parking, easy walk to venue, and the venue holds like 10k but because of the way they've utilized the outdoor space it seems much smaller.  While I was a lawn guy in my youth, nothing better than being close to the stage for me anymore.

The musicianship and entertainment of all the acts were fantastic.  Really seemed to be enjoying themselves.  Lady A had two horns that really added another layer of depth to many of their songs.

Overall great time.

Saw Ted Nugent last week, it was ok.  He puts on a good show, but nothing like his old stuff.

His opener was Derek Day.  That kid has potential, real showman and a different type of voice.  He did a good cover of Benny and the Jets.  The female drummer was off the charts.

The Punch Brothers are absolutely on top of their game now. I've seen Thile 6 or 7 times in the past 15 years or so and he's just gotten better and better. Current band is all top talent and the show I saw had a trio with Sara Watkins and Sara Jarosz opening. Everyone was on stage for the last 45 minutes and it was crazy awesome.

My latest show was Chris Stapleton with Margo Price and Brent Cobb in support.

This was my 2nd Stapleton show after seeing him for the first time on his shed tour last summer for Traveller.  Don't go to this show if you are expecting to find folks running around the stage, using lots of pyro and props, a wicked cool stage setup or bringing the openers back for cameo collaborations during the headliner set.

Stapleton makes the music the centerpiece.  Period.  Chris sets up on stage left and angles 30-45 degrees to face his wife, then just rips through the set.  The great songs from Traveller such as "Parachute", "Fire Away", and the title cut are the centerpieces to this show, and rightfully so.  His recent release "From A Room, Vol. 1" contributes another standout, the smoking hot "Second One to Know" which is the penultimate song prior to the main set closer of "Tennessee Whiskey".

Both of the openers had great bands and song, although Margo's voice is a mumble of marbles sometimes.  But both were worth seeing - if you don't want to close up the tailgate "that" early, you can skip Brent Cobb, but catch Margo's retro country sound.  Price is a welcome relief from male oriented today's country pop that fits well alongside the once in a generation Stapleton.

Magpie Salute.....

Being an old Black Crowes fan clubber back in the day, I looked forward to this months ago (sadly Eddie Harsch died before show 1).... I didn't enjoy the 1st show back then at all - They played 5 nights in NYC and I happen to hit the night where they played Solo work and just a handful of Black Crowes - Singer also had voice issues and they were working thru their cohesiveness to the point where they seemed angry and frustrated with the audience lack of attention...

Fast Forward to this weekend and they sound like a band that's been together, vocals top notch, many Hits plus solo stuff, plus new Magpie and even Fearless Floyd Cover... Marc Ford is a tremendous guitar player, Love Sven Pippen Bass...... and Rich Robinson has become an old Music Soul from back in the day when he seemed like a Shy kid up there in the shadow of Chris...... 

Really Sad that Chris Robinson is such a tool - I mean fine if you don't want to be the Black Crowes Circus anymore and you want to play what you want in your own band But, I really wish he would have some respect and acknowledge how far his brother has come to be able to lead and have his musical game 1000x times what it was in the Crowes..... He could work on the in between song banter a bit but, He's become a real Rock and Roll soul and it's a pleasure to have watched him grow to this...

I'd forgotten what a great venue that is to see concerts, easy free parking, easy walk to venue, and the venue holds like 10k but because of the way they've utilized the outdoor space it seems much smaller.  While I was a lawn guy in my youth, nothing better than being close to the stage for me anymore.

The musicianship and entertainment of all the acts were fantastic.  Really seemed to be enjoying themselves.  Lady A had two horns that really added another layer of depth to many of their songs.

Overall great time. 

I took my 9 year old to this show since she loves Kelsie Balerini from Disney Country and Peter Pan...... I got pit tickets and held her most of the show - Never heard of Bret Young but, He gave my kid the ole wink and point and she's a fan forever.....lol.. 

Whole show was great - Awesome for a 9 year old especially to be up on the rail of the stage.... Whole different experience up there!!!!

Went, not being a huge fan of the bands or country but, had an awesome time and loves all the acts - I can see Brett Young being the next big country dude....

Lucky for us you can get that close for this show...

Saw Muse a week later - had to take her since babysitter backed out and there was no way to get that close - Also Not that big a fan of Muse - seems like Anthem rock from a Vampire movie to me.... good times but, we left early

Sound was great, but they were kind of low energy, but I will attribute that to being young and the tiny stage. But holy crap people, put away the cell phones...no one wants to see your crappy videos, and they will sit on your phone eating up space. I thought this wouldn't be an issue since I was on the younger spectrum of the crowd at 36, but it was still bad, especially due to the small size of the venue.

They are playing at a music fest in Louisville at the end of September, so I will see how it differs in that setting.

Rheostatics played our local free concert series last night. It's an open air thing that everyone goes to every Wednesday and Saturday. It's free and they get decent names. Carly Rae Jepsen, Tegan and Sara, Our Lady Peace etc... have all played recently. OLP brought out 17,500 people, so it's a big area. Bands come and play for an hour, hour 15 or so and it's a bunch of old people in lawn chairs and there's no atmosphere and I can't get into it.

Last night for Rheostatics there were maybe 1000 people but 3-400 knew them really well. It was actually good. They played for about an hour 15. Then came back for an encore and jist kept playing. A little over 2 hours someone pulled the plug (this is in a park in the middle of downtown so curfew issues i assume). Really damn good. I know no one knows who the hell they are but I wanted to share.

Seeing Depeche Mode here in Tampa in September.  I've seen them twice before and they put on a great show.

Unfortunately due to Irma, they cancelled the show tonight here in Tampa.  I've seen them twice before so no big deal.  Waiting for Adam Ant to reschedule and Psychedelic Furs later this month.
