Consensus Top 350 Albums of All-Time: 195. A Love Supreme – John Coltrane (142 Viewers)

I’ll take lists until midnight tomorrow - with the holiday weekend I’ll start the countdown on 7/7, but will comment on how the list shakes out and who is closest and furtherest from consensus, etc. leading up to the Countdown.
Furthest from the consensus winner, checking in.

41 lists in

1,527 albums named with 1,125 of them names only on one list.

It's likely going to take an album appearing on at least two lists to make the Top 300 now - the 70 pointers are tied for 300th place now.
We're gonna need a bigger list.

Seriously. Maybe 500?
I’ll start with each participant’s highest ranked album that did not make the Top 300 and then start at 300. The more obscure albums will get their due at the end when people can reveal their full lists. To countdown from 500 would lose people when 478 is a bootleg live Widespread Panic show from Duke University.

Everyone thinks that.
I figure it will be JML if he turns in a list. It would be OH if he were doing it.
It would be pretty easy to do a list where none of my top 70 made the top 300.
But realistically i would have at least 50-60 that no one else had. Perhaps 19 of my top 20
I will be happy if one scandanavian synth pop artist makes it,

Nevertheless should be a fun rundown. I will chip in where i got something to say

List sent. Was just going to follow along, but decided to throw a quick list together. I don't think I'll get too many matches, unless @rockaction or @AcerFC are in this.

I did turn in a list. We have slightly different punk tastes, but I have a bunch on there for sure. Same with hip hop.

eta* no hardcore or Epitaph-style punk, really, which I think Acer is more fond of also.

Nice! Who knows if we match but maybe we'll be close.

By contrast, I expect to be very chalky. Lots of standard middle-aged-dummy stuff on my list.

Same, though there are so many options some really good selections are gonna get squeezed out.

Prettymuch my entire list too.

I'll probably be a combination of chalk and non-mainstream but not way out there not chalk.

I definitely didn't go bootleg-deep.

I'm going to sit in the corner with my discman now...

OK, my list is in! (I hope.)

I'm surprised at my decade counts.

70s 7
80s 16
90s 17
00s 17
10s 5
20s 8

I'm shocked that the 2000s had so many. I didn't think I was listening to all that much new music then! I've had a personal resurgence in new music listening around 2022. I could have added more from the 20s but I'm sure none of them will make the countdown. I initially thought that my non-20s albums would be heavily represented since almost all are from popular artists but now I'm thinking too many are too new!

Anyway, it was a fun exercise and I can't wait for the results!

I am not surprised to have that many unique albums. As a recovering prog snob, a lot of my favorite prog rock albums still tend to be among my favorites, and I did not put any album on my list to be a contrarian or to simply give it a mention. A lot of my favorites are from the newer wave of prog artists of the 90s and 00s. If I had to go 200 or 300 deep on a list like this, it would be a better representation of how much variety I now listen to, but with only 70 spots, the prog lover in me really did show his face.

With so many people having 15 or less unique albums has me concerned this is going to resemble typical "greatest albums" lists too much.

The Top 50 will have a few surprised but also a lot of chalk. After that it’s a lot more wide open and not necessarily what you would expect. The “matches” don’t necessarily have to be chalk albums. I had a few random odd ones matched.

35/70 unique seems about right. I included a chunk of my niche-y Brazil/African stuff that I expected to be alone on. But I think pretty mainstream outside that. I’m interested to see my highest that did not make it will be. It is either going to be one of those Brazil/Africa albums, or something that I’m going to wonder how the heck that it did not make the 300.

If you like older prog, we might cross over a time or two.
Yep, I have plenty of love for the original wave of prog (although some of it hasn't aged super well for me), although most of my picks from them are from the big dogs, so there won't be any Italian prog on my list. :P

I figured we'd eventually lean that way, although to be fair there is a reason that many all-timers are so popular.

It's such a weird situation. Thanks to greatest hits and streaming, there are several artists who I have spent hours of my life listening to, some MANY more hours than the time spent listening to much of my back 35 albums, who couldn't make my list. The biggest one and it's a damn shame is Elvis Presley. Does anyone alive today actually listen to any of his studio albums? Yet he has albums and albums worth of material that is so listenable. If this were top artists, he'd be a top 10 for me, for sure. But he doesn't get an appearance on my top 70 albums list.

Oh well, I guess I have more respect now for Rolling Stone and how hard it is to make these lists.

Not really.
