I’d expect brothers that grew up together to like the same music. That was my experience with most of the brothers I know/knew.

My younger brother grew up listening to hip hop and is now a huge country music fan. These are the two types of music I like least

Before this started I would have agreed, but now I am not so sure. So far I have been surprise by the range of albums and artists. I THINK artists like The Who have fewer albums I'd guess the masses are fighting over for points - versus a Led Zeppelin, for example, so I would also guess a top 10-20 showing is very possible.

I agree. The Beatles and LZ might end up with a lot high ranking albums but maybe lower than expected as they are stealing points from each other. Bands with singularly clear best albums have a good chance to dominate the top 10.

Nice. Glad to see it. This album blew my mind when I first heard it. I had seen “Fell In Love With A Girl” on MTV, really liked it, and bought the album at a Target for some reason even though I figured it would probably be mediocre at best.

But when I put it in the stereo, “Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground” came on and my interest soared. Was this a punk Zeppelin? I like Zeppelin. I love punk. I can do this. Then “Hotel Yorba” played through my beater system and my just-moved-home-from-the-city-*** loved the countrified interlude. Then back to the rock. By the time I got through “Little Room” and its drop off into oblivion and cavestomp drumming I was completely giddy and totally rapt. This was something like I’d never heard.

So one of my musical loves thusly began. Brother and sister? Wife and lover? Red and white and black? Viva Detroit again in The Stooges (another fave of mine) tradition?!

All of it and then some. This was sublime. The eerie “The Union Forever” and the simple beauty of “We’re Going To Be Friends,” about childhood experiences without being too twee or ironic and then “Now Mary,” and then fin. I shook my head.

A masterclass of an album. The last great rock band, and Jack White, the last real rock star. Genius, entrepreneur, bat-maker, guitar-maker, vinyl aficionado and sometimes Londonite. What a band. What a story. Viva Detroit indeed.

This album, along with another Jazz album I’m sure is to come, was my first exposure to real jazz and it didn’t come until I was in college. It blew my mind. I played saxophone a bit in junior high and I think if I had heard this then I would have kept playing. Love it.

Super hard to pick a favorite track from Southeastern. They are all great and represent a great deal of pain, sadness and even a bit of hope. I know Isbell will not be forgiven for a lot of his behavior in life and maybe that’s why it resonates for me. Mistakes were made, gotta keep on keeping on. I’m putting Traveling Alone on the playlist.

First up, I'm going to listen to the Modest Mouse record that @Juxtatarot has at #10 and the Band of Horses record that @shuke has at #6. These are both artists that have other albums I know and like, but for whatever reason I've never listened to these two records.

It was a beautiful evening for the rooftop on Wednesday, so I forced OH into listening to the Modest Mouse record listed above that @Juxtatarot had at #10. Very enjoyable for me, maybe less so for him in part because he reminded me that his band opened for Modest Mouse and the band members stayed with him during the tour for their first record, and they were kinda jerks. He does still think their drummer is fantastic and pointed out several instances of particularly fabulous drumming.

Now a few days later I've forgotten what my favorites were, but I know I like Gravity Rides Everything, The Cold Part, Lives, Alone Down There, and The Stars Are Projectors.

After we listened to this one, OH had me fire up Built to Spill's "There's Nothing Wrong with Love," which coincidentally had been @Nick Vermeil 's #9, so now I've covered one of his top ten that I didn't know, too. My familiarity with Built to Spill had generally been limited to their "big song," Carry the Zero. This record was a WOW for me. Favorite tracks: all of them, but I was particularly surprised at "Cars" because when it started, I thought it was going to be nothing, and then it became insanely good.

Next up will be the Band of Horses record mentioned above, though I'm not sure when I will get to it.

Quadrophenia is the sixth studio album by the English rock band the Who, released as a double album on 26 October 1973 by Track Records. It is the group's third rock opera, the previous two being the "mini-opera" song "A Quick One, While He's Away" (1966) and the album Tommy (1969). Set in London and Brighton in 1965, the story follows a young mod named Jimmy and his search for self-worth and importance. Quadrophenia is the only Who album entirely written by Pete Townshend.

I would have bet heavily that this would have been at least Top 100 - obviously Top 5 for me.

This album is so powerful but so theatrical at the same time. So many classic songs that work inside of the rock opera and on their own as hard rock songs.

I am guessing in this format and with people limiting themselves to an album or two/artist, the 3 albums before this one soaked up many of the votes.

I am thinking my Who album will miss the cut and I’ll have wasted a vote. I don’t fear that as much with The Kinks, but only time will tell. And I voted for my trad fave Who album and not my current fave, which I have to imagine we will be blessed to read about,

John Prine is the debut album by American country/folk singer-songwriter John Prine, issued by Atlantic Records in 1971. In 2012, the album was ranked number 452 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. It was later ranked number 149 in a revised version of the list published in 2020.

Prine was offered a recording contract by Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records after the record executive saw the singer perform several of his own songs at a Kris Kristofferson show at the Bitter End.

For decades John Prine's debut album has been in my regular rotation. It is a beauty of a country folk album. John Prine was full of wisdom, and he wrote songs that will make you laugh, cry, and think. I love his writing style. This album is full of fabulous songs such as Angel from Montgomery, Hello in There, Far From Me, Sam Stone, Spanish Pipedream, Paradise, Illegal Smile, Donald and Lydia, Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore, Pretty Good, etc. Song after song that is so good. I'll see what my JP partner, landrys hat, wants to do as far as putting a song on the playlist. The sad songs are my very favorites, but for the playlist maybe the playful Spanish Pipedream. What do you think @landrys hat?

White Blood Cells is the third studio album by American rock duo the White Stripes, independently released by the Sympathy for the Record Industry on July 3, 2001. Recording took place in Memphis, Tennessee at Easley-McCain Recording over three days, and was produced by guitarist and lead vocalist Jack White. Production was rushed in order to capture a "real tense feeling" and the band's energy, and was their first album to be mastered in a studio.

I biffed this. Should have been on my list. I listened to this constantly in the early 00s.

Unplugged is a live album by the American rock band Alice in Chains, released on July 30, 1996, by Columbia Records. It was recorded on April 10, 1996, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Majestic Theatre for the television series MTV Unplugged.

I still owe a writeup for at least one other album. But this is skipping the line.

By this point, Layne was underweight, wearing sunglasses during his entrance despite the stage being only lit by candles, and wearing a long-sleeve shirt to hide all the needle marks. Throughout the performance he rarely opens his eyes. He's high as a kite and messes up a few times. Jerry Cantrell is there to reassure him. "We're allowed a couple of those, it's been a while. You guys just get to hear more, that's all." Cantrell has a wastebasket next to him because he's sick with food poisoning. He doesn't show it. If Layne can make it, he can make it. And Layne does. He looks like he's barely trying, but the voice is still powerful. This was technically Layne Staley's second to last live performance. And he'd still write a few songs. But it feels like the last word. At least that last word was "I wish I could hug you all -- but I'm not gonna."

Metallica is in the audience. So you hear a taste of "Enter Sandman" before "Sludge Factory" and the intro to "Battery" before AiC (eventually) gets to "Angry Chair". Plus Metallica has recently had their hair cut short, so bassist Mike Inez's guitar reads "Friends Don't Let Friends Get Friends Haircuts".

What I'm saying is that I obviously really love this album. I listen to it a lot. It's the highest Unplugged album I have, though I know I'll get to talk about another one later. For all that, it's hard to pick a favorite because it feels like taking a single piece from a bigger thing. Maybe I should focus on songs that are less likely to be picked from elsewhere? Well then, "The Killer is Me" is the only original song, and a bit of an underappreciated gem. This is an excellent, emotional version of "Got Me Wrong". Though I'd lean slightly to "Brother", as despite how good Ann Wilson is in the original, this is the definitive version for me. I'll put that in for now, though I'm willing to hear input from the others voting for this.

Nice. Glad to see it. This album blew my mind when I first heard it. I had seen “Fell In Love With A Girl” on MTV, really liked it, and bought the album at a Target for some reason even though I figured it would probably be mediocre at best.

But when I put it in the stereo, “Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground” came on and my interest soared. Was this a punk Zeppelin? I like Zeppelin. I love punk. I can do this. Then “Hotel Yorba” played through my beater system and my just-moved-home-from-the-city-*** loved the countrified interlude. Then back to the rock. By the time I got through “Little Room” and its drop off into oblivion and cavestomp drumming I was completely giddy and totally rapt. This was something like I’d never heard.

So one of my musical loves thusly began. Brother and sister? Wife and lover? Red and white and black? Viva Detroit again in The Stooges (another fave of mine) tradition?!

All of it and then some. This was sublime. The eerie “The Union Forever” and the simple beauty of “We’re Going To Be Friends,” about childhood experiences without being too twee or ironic and then “Now Mary,” and then fin. I shook my head.

A masterclass of an album. The last great rock band, and Jack White, the last real rock star. Genius, entrepreneur, bat-maker, guitar-maker, vinyl aficionado and sometimes Londonite. What a band. What a story. Viva Detroit indeed.

Awesome write up. Going into the album did you know it was just a 2 piece band?

Point of Know Return is the fifth studio album by American rock band Kansas, released in 1977.

"Dust in the Wind" is known for its sparse acoustic nature. The guitar line for the song was written by Kerry Livgren as a finger exercise for learning fingerpicking. His wife, Vicci, heard what he was doing, remarked that the melody was nice, and encouraged him to write lyrics for it. Livgren was unsure whether his fellow band members would like it since it was a departure from their signature style. However, he did offer it to them, and the song was accepted and then recorded.
