Consensus Top 350 Albums of All-Time: 12. Ten – Pearl Jam (101 Viewers)

It might make for a boring countdown but if you think V album is better than X, Y and Z albums then you should list em'. Who cares if it's all the same bands-it's being honest.

You could have done that here. It’s a self-imposed limitation and people treated it differently. I have no regrets doing that and only say anything by way of explaining why I picked that particular one as opposed to the others by that artist.
It's fine either way. I'm not calling out anyone for being dishonest or anything. Just saying that I think it would be ok if someone put ELO albums if they felt like those 15 albums were some of the best ever made and you shouldn't feel guilty.

I figured. Just saying we all had the option and I think the limiting comes in because there’s a feeling we want a diversity of artists. The four Beastie Boys and four or five Tool albums let me know this was a non-absolute version of the Prisoner’s Dilemma and that the self-limitation didn’t achieve the goal of those who did that. It’s a loaded term and I say it dispassionately but that’s the result. Cant think of a better word. We actually did it right—we need more people. That’s the takeaway. Everybody was awesome. It’s too small a sample size, and tweaking it would skew it in a different unforeseen way, so that is not a gripe.
Sure, 50 lists is a tiny sample size and we’ve seen personal tastes have a major affect on the rankings, but that kind of was the idea. At this point I’m glad there wasn’t a 100 participants because of all the work but it would have made for a better countdown of course.

You kidding? I volunteer you to handle 200 entries! Nah, I’m just describing what happened and I’m really neutral about it and love all of the Beastie albums. Each one, actually.

I think the Beastie Boys are our age group’s common musical and pop cultural thread. It transcends race, sex, class. You don’t have to like their music but they threaded that very precarious saw-toothed needle and somehow came out fairly unscathed. RIP MCA.
The only group that I would "travel" to go see in high school and college.

Awesome album. Van Halen was my first favorite band. VH II and Women and maybe 1984 are the ones I still listen to, but this is a dynamite choice. It’s my brother’s favorite VH and I got into them because of him. “Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love” with the “Hey Hey Hey” still pumps life into this carcass.

I’d have ranked much differently if I was doing a desert island approach. That would have led me picking albums that I’ve never listened to though just so I could grab some of my favorite songs

I definitely would have had some Petty, Dylan, Billy Joel, Elton John, etc
See, even using the same criteria, people view it differently. I think more like I only have 70 albums, so I want to avoid dud songs I don't like. I have to maximize the hit rate.

This was probably #71 for me - it was one that was in my Top 70 on first draft but when I listened to the candidates again, this one sounded a little dated - still they had the best groove of the 70s hard rock bands and had so many fun songs and oh man that Eddie could play.

How many of the albums from this countdown didn't make the 350?
there was about 1,600 albums submitted - but I've listed a lot more than the Top 350.

You’ve done an absolute ton of work and this has been awesome. It gives me something positive to do on the board and think about positive stuff.

Rules. Thanks.

I gotta talk about Wyclef and The Refugee All-Stars “The Carnival.” You had listed it in the “other albums” section about five or so days ago.

What a funny, well-produced but lethally serious album about the violence that tears apart his former country and the city that he was in because of dislocation. It’s unbelievable when you consider where he’s from and how much deeply felt humor, sadness, and occasional celebration there is. Should have been higher.

My favorite from the album is the duo (they must be mates) of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely :heart:s Club Band Reprise and A Day in The Life. They are companions and not to be separated.

Just like the other Sgt. Pepper's is not to be separated from With a Little Help from My Friends!
These pairings opening and closing the album are the peaks. If you're looking for a curveball for the playlist, my next favorites fit - Within You Without You and Good Morning Good Morning.

I’m a huge VH fan, but my moniker is all fluke in that Atomic Punk was playing on the radio on my way to my first live fantasy draft. When I was asked what my team name was, this popped into my head and the rest is history … 34 years later and it’s still with me!

Toss up for me. Atomic Punk is obviously incredible, Running with the Devil is an all time classic, and Ain’t Talking ‘Bout Love is a banger. I’m good with anything from this one!

One of the drawbacks of digital music is the inability to combine two entities into one song or file, much like we would hear on the radio. Eruption and You Really Got Me comprise a prime example of this and would be great for the playlist, but @zamboni gets the last word.

Good deep cut and kind of gets at their negativity towards women. Ooh, I went there. I’m no feminist, but early VH is pretty negative. I’ve talked about it before. Probably influenced a younger rock in a bad way, actually. I’m not going to self-flagellate but if I heard my son listening we’d have a conversation. It wouldn’t be a tendentious one. Just a reminder that all people deserve a platonic respect. Because VH didn’t seem to allow for it. “Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love” still rocks but read the lyrics on their first. I get hypersexual stuff but there’s an element of meanness on the first and I don’t listen to it anymore.

I will do Women and Children First and VHII is more ironic and I can appreciate that. Should I even buzzkill post this? Yes. Send.

PS LOL. Whatever. I can laugh a second later; I hope you’ve all made peace with it. ****, I lived this for over two years. Then it was the Dead Kennedys.

Now that’s a great song and video. Still waiting at the gates of Bellevue for Eddie.

Alright, now that I am getting crabby with the Mariners game time to ramble about albums I got to today/last night

I like Exile On Main Street more and more with repeat listens. For my personal taste, it isn't as consistent as other Stones' album, and part of that is what doc put so well - it is quite a mix of different styles and genres sometimes it really hits and sometimes it doesn't for me. 2 that don't are tracks 3 and 4, and what has happened in the past is what I grumble about people doing - not continuing with and listening to the full album, so lesson learned. That meant that I was missing songs I think are awesome like Tumbling Dice, Sweet Virginia, Happy, Loving Cup, Soul Survivor, and All Down the Line. I prefer the brevity of Some Girls, and I did have another album in my top 20, but this would be next in line for me with Let it Bleed. Great stuff.

Stevie Wonder is an artist that I have grown to love 100% due to people like Uruk doing a MAD31 and krista and others hyping him up and taking songs. I picked Innervisions for the pool listen because it was the one 70s album that was on the list I chose from  I was fairly familiar with the album from listening after MAD31 Pt1 and again when I got a stack of records from the library. I slightly prefer the '76 album, but dig this one top to bottom too. My favorites are the opening 3 songs.

Hotel California was a good, not great listen for me. I don't get the hate, but for me they are one of the rare 'hits' bands for me. The title track and Life in the Fast Lane I still dig after hearing a lot, but the other track I really liked on this listen was Victim of Love.

I've heard of Breaking Benjamin, but coded them in the 00s bucket of bands I don't click with, so I never bothered to give them a chance. I ended up really digging We Are Not Alone a lot. I liked the guitar sound and his voice fits with it well - it never gets to the high register that turns me off of some of this era's music in the genre. It does sound like heavier late era Pumpkins a bit at times, especially on the tracks Billy was involved with. The good and bad is that I hear the Billy influence, and my least favorite track was the slower Rain. All the rest was really good, espeically Believe, So Cold, Follow (a Billy track), and Simple Design.

I saw the picture for Dope, saw the title of their top track on Spotify and thought there was no chance in hell I would like this, but I clicked on the first track of Life and realized I was wrong. I was instantly hit with a mix of Marilyn Manson and Slipknot (both I have also been recently revisiting albums from) with a splash of Ministry - sign me up for all that! I might have liked this more than the Breaking Benjamin as it scratched that industrial metal itch that I don't find too often. It brought me back to my HS years jamming to ministry and similar sounding music. My favorites were the opening track Take Your Best Shot, Stop (my favorite), March Of Hope, and Nothing (Why). Good stuff, @BLOCKED_PUNT

There were a couple riffs on Life that reminded me a bit of Helmet, and I wondered if BP or others have listened to that at all. Meantime is another '92 album that I was listening to a lot at the time trying to find other heavy stuff as I moved away from more straight metal. Not on my list, and it's been awhile since I listened to the full album so I can't speak to it's consistency overall, but songs like Unsung and Turned Out are still on various playlists I listen to.

There's not a wrong choice for this album. But in honor of a FBG with the same name, I'd say "Atomic Punk" would be appropriate. If not that one, "I'm the One" would be my second choice.

short hairs!

Meantime was my weightlifting album in ‘92. Their first had the great “Sinatra” on it. Betty was cool a year or so later. A little more melodic. Then I stopped listening. Tastes can change.

Same. I had Betty, Meantime, and Strap It On in my collection, but after that I didn’t bother. I was surprised to see them putting out new material in 2023. That album was ok, but doesn't hit nearly as hard as Meantime did and still does.

Just read they’re considered post-metal (?) forebears and that they’re popular with the modern hardcore set. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Alright, now that I am getting crabby with the Mariners game.......
Why are you crabby? They're up 6-1 on the ChiSox. Woo another dominant performance. JRod is playing like 2nd half Julio. Geno's 1st HR since coming back. Young is now hitting. Other than the Dumper in a slump, nothing but good vibes.....and Raleigh will turn it around.

This is the most optimistic I've been about the M's in 20+ years. Let's hope they don't blow this opportunity.

*now 8-1 after a Naylor 2 run bomb.

(Looking up post-metal now)

There’s a Wiki on it. I had no idea, hence the (?) I put there. One article/blurb said nu-metal and one said post-metal. They don’t sound anything like nu metal because I watched Beato on it and he said nu-metal ditched the pentatonic scale. But Betty has blues on it, so that didn’t compute for me so on the fly I went with post over nu.

I never would have been able to do that without Beato, who is a total lightning rod.

eta* the interesting thing is not many people know that change in nu metal and that might be why so many people who like metal don’t like nu metal. It does have more ferocity and different topical choices for the lyrics but it really isn’t too far away from my metalhead friends’ conversations ca. 1991—it just was no longer private. Shared with a broader audience and more emotive, but every art form had turned inward and expressed painful negativity about their station in life. Think of the feminist acoustic singers. Same thing, just masculine, lower class, and white and poor.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Why are you crabby? They're up 6-1 on the ChiSox. Woo another dominant performance. JRod is playing like 2nd half Julio. Geno's 1st HR since coming back. Young is now hitting. Other than the Dumper in a slump, nothing but good vibes.....and Raleigh will turn it around.

This is the most optimistic I've been about the M's in 20+ years. Let's hope they don't blow this opportunity.

*now 8-1 after a Naylor 2 run bomb.
It was "only" 1-1 when i left the room to post that, and i want them to be great so much that i get pissed at any bad call or it they don't dominate from inning 1.

Agree this is probably the best top to bottom lineup ive seen in forever. Like you said, Cal is in a slump but the bottom of the order is playing lights out the last couple weeks and the top is dominate. Very tough lineup to get through and i can't remember the last time i said that. Didn't know you were a fan...

I'm just like you. I was screaming at the TV tonight on a bad strike call and my wife said, "you know, it's only the 1st inning".

I'm a lifelong (suffering) Mariners' fan since 1977. I was born and raised in Seattle. Been to probably 70-80 games over the years---mostly in the King Dome. Still follow them closely every season since I moved away. I pay for the MLB.TV package every season hoping "this" will be the year. Like I said, this is the best I've felt about the team at this point in the season since probably 2003.
