Consensus Top 350 Albums of All-Time: 12. Ten – Pearl Jam (120 Viewers)

Hard to keep up, but I am pleased to see that Kick (INXS) and Wildflowers (Petty) both did so well.

Kick was one of the first albums ever that I listened to from start to finish regularly, on cassette no less back when I was 14. It holds up really well.

Wildflowers was what convinced me that Petty was more than just a hits guy; wonderful album, with every track being a winner. It being a major summer album for me, it has gotten numerous plays from me recently.

Kick is the sixth studio album by Australian rock band INXS, released on 19 October 1987 through WEA in Australia, Mercury Records in Europe, and Atlantic Records in the United States and Canada. The album was produced by British producer Chris Thomas, recorded by David Nicholas in Sydney and Paris and mixed by Bob Clearmountain at AIR Studios in London.

When I first saw the video for True Men Don't Kill Coyotes back in 1984, it was unlike anything I'd seen/heard before. I had all their albums up through BSSM, and then I just fell out of love with the group. I'll turn the channel if they come on the radio if it's anything released after Soul to Squeeze (which was supposed to be on this album but they thought they already had too many slow songs so this one got the ax and was released on the freaking Coneheads soundtrack. This album and Mother's Milk were RHCP at their best and there is some great musicianship and songs on these two albums. I can't remember right now if Mother's Milk made my top 70, but it should have based on how many plays it got on my stereo. I can't believe they're still putting out new albums., but good for them.

Is This It is the debut studio album by American rock band the Strokes. It was first released on July 30, 2001 in Australia, with RCA Records handling the release internationally and Rough Trade Records handling the United Kingdom release. It was recorded at Transporterraum in New York City with producer Gordon Raphael during March and April 2001. For their debut, the band strived to capture a simple sound that was not significantly enhanced in the studio. Building on their 2001 EP The Modern Age, the band members molded compositions largely through live takes during recording sessions, while lead singer and songwriter Julian Casablancas continued to detail the lives and relationships of urban youth in his lyrics.

ThIs came out a little after I turned 19 and it was the perfect alignment of age and sound. I loved The White Stripes but The Strokes were cooler. which struck me even more at the time. Sure Julian can't really sing (which he seemed to have realized later as he's become a big proponent of auto tune). I liked their next two albums but for my micro-generation, this was the album that represented everything about what it felt like to be young, looking for girls, going to parties and most importantly a precarious balance of listlessness and youthful exuberance. We were always having fun but perhaps never very satisfied. I am fine with any song here, it's a 100% no skip album.

back in high school we’d have a lot of small get togethers at my house and drop acid. I wouldn’t qualify them as parties (I did throw quite a few of those as well) but these were more like 5-10 people tops

Anyway one night someone had left Cover Me by Candlebox on repeat and it played for hours. Not my sole reason for ranking that album but that certainly made it memorable for me

I'm leaning Trying Your Luck personally, but there's not really a bad track on the album. Think the next two albums had stronger singles but this was the all around better album, hard to say just how big the hype around the band was at the time the Modern Age EP came out

I didn't expect Styx to do well here, but I thought The Grand Illusion would fare a little better than this.

That record by Lana Del Rey is a great mellow record. That's a good example of a record the younger me never would have liked, but the middle-aged me now loves.

That debut by Fleet Foxes is so good (as is their second, Helplessness Blues). I didn't rank it, but it's one I considered.

This album was released the same day as a fairly popular Nirvana album that I’m sure will fare well in these rankings. My roommate and I went to Tower Records first thing that day - I bought The Low End Theory and he bought, well, don’t concern yourself. The rest of the semester we fought over the stereo for what would play first, even though there were no bad options.

That record by Lana Del Rey is a great mellow record. That's a good example of a record the younger me never would have liked, but the middle-aged me now loves.

I consider myself a decent Styx fan, but their albums were always a little inconsistent. Their greatest hits and deeper cuts are more accessible for me, but I was never big on their albums (with a couple of exceptions, one of which made my top 70).

Trivia: the high school I taught at 25 years ago (the now closed Lourdes High School at 55th and Pulaski in Chicago) had the distinction of being the very last local high school venue that Styx played at before they made it big. It was well before my time, but the theater department head was still around and he even still had a fancy throne-like French style chair that they left behind and "donated" to the school.

Breaking the Girl is much better IMO, but I have no ranking skin in this one, so I’m just part of the peanut gallery.

I went for another S&G album. It would probably be this, but I hate the title song, but it does contain my favorite S&G song.

I have struggled with others as well, but I do think Did You Know That There's a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd is really, really good (even though a few cuts in the middle could have been lost to tighten it up a bit). And I love the first half of Ultraviolence, but the second half mostly loses me until the cover of The Other Woman, which lands really well for me.

What a great album. I even like "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright", usually (although I didn't when I first heard it).

Of course the album includes not one but two indisputable all time great songs in the title track and "The Boxer", but I love so much about this album. I'd love to hear opinions but I am inclined to go with either "The Only Living Boy in New York" or "Keep the Customer Satisfied" as the playlist choice.

Trivia time again: the song "Cecilia" was actually inspired by writer's block. St. Cecilia, you see, is the patron saint of musicians and the singer is expressing his frustration and ultimate happiness when Cecilia abandons him in the songwriting process and then returns to bless him once again. Listen to the song with this meaning in mind and it sheds a whole new light on the lyrics.

iirc that third verse was not originally part of the song but someone (Art? the label?) insisted on it. Others (notable BeBe and CeCe Winans in 1988) have remade the song and left it out.

Great to see INXS make the list here. Hard to go wrong with any of the songs on this album. I'll put in my vote for "New Sensation" but I'm happy with whatever @Mrs. Rannous decides.
