I thought the whole point of running these things was to get more likes?
If so, it didn't work for me. Maybe it was dark mode that did me in.

If it's dark mode that did you in then I don't want to be right.

Wait. What?

I like dark mode. I've changed all my screens to night reader. I can't look at a white screen anymore and I can't imagine how I did so until around 2022 or so. Argh. No wonder my eyes stink.

This was on my provisional list for a long time but I figured it would be fine without my help

I'd say that a I wasted a vote but I can't think of a replacement that would have cracked the list. Although I have to admit that Jimmy Cliff took the miracle of zamboni ranking it extraordinarily high on his list so . . .

Well, it was more so that his posts were showing up in white font to both dark mode and normal mode readers.

I understand that (I think). I think he tried to adjust the color a few times and it wasn't suitable, IIRC, but I was getting suspended off and on through that time period so I don't necessary have the clearest or cleanest memory.

Day Tripper / We Can Work It Out was a double A side in the UK. In the US, We Can Work It Out was the A side and Day Tripper was the B side. Probably because of the drug references in the latter. Of course, the Beatles were so big that many DJs played both sides of their singles anyway.

I still have this Capitol Records orange/yellow 45 - it was the first music purchase of my life at age 8. I bought it at the local McCrory's (like a Woolworth - lol, that help any of you younger people??)

It's in my keepsake box in the garage. It was played on my Roy Rogers logoed record player. And I had received "The Chipmunks Sing The Beatles Hits" album the previous Christmas a couple months before.
I remember Woolworths
Woolworth's five and dime. Whatever happened to department stores you could get a cheeseburger at?
As a kid the highlight of shopping with the family was a stop at either Woolworths or Kresge's counter for burgers and shakes. 🍔

I saw them at Giants Stadium opening for Aerosmith with Deep Purple in the middle. They hadn’t really broken that big yet but the crowd on the floor went nuts for them.
Holy **** that had to be one hell of a show.
They billed it as “Three Generations of Metal” although arguably none of them are Metal.

I assume "Three Generations of Fairly Heavy Blues-Based Hard Rock," while definitely catchy, didn't fit on the concert t-shirts.

Also not sure that 3 bands starting within a decade and a half of each other truly qualifies as three generations, but whatever.

Or I can start talking about how amazing Devin Townsend is
I'll piggyback on this.
Everyone should listen to Ziltoid the Omniscient right?

Concept album “ about an extraterrestrial being named Ziltoid from the planet Ziltoidia 9. Ziltoid travels to Earth in search of "your universe's ultimate cup of coffee””

It’s heavy (like imagine an alien invasion ship battle set to a drum and bass assault ) but mostly clean vocals

He also played pretty much every instrument (programmable drum kit), did voices, production, everything

Just a great accomplishment

Or check out one of his 25+ other albums. Very diverse.
Heh, Ziltoid is actually about the last thing I would recommend to someone who has never heard him. You have to already be all-in on Devin IMO to get the cartoonish and whacky vibe of Ziltoid. It's like Zappa doing full-on metal and cranked up to 11.

Maybe tonight Metal After Dark should feature a few recommended albums since this is an album countdown?

gotta go with "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)" coupled with "A Day in the Life"...as mentioned above if the pairing is allowed for the playlist.
So we're going with more than one song per album?

Sweet. I was thinking I'd have a hard time of it when we got to my #1. Now Sophie's choice need not be made.

I mainly mentioned it because of this thread since it’s really complete as an album, but yeah, I could see someone giving up pretty quickly

  • Do you prefer a mix of heavy and progressive metal with some theatricality?
    • Consider albums like:
      • Deconstruction
      • Ziltoid the Omniscient
      • Alien
Option 2: Progressive and experimental

Remember: This is just a starting point. Devin Townsend's music is vast and interconnected, and you'll likely discover new favorites by exploring beyond these initial suggestions.

It's weird. I have zero interest in listening to GNR today. Having said that. There was a stretch when I had em on repeat. Appetite was just a ground breaking record that defined an era of I don't take sh1t from anyone. Ha ha

This all sounds like code for "just listen to his best album, which is obviously Terria." :shades::shades:

Born to Run is the third studio album by the American singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen, released on August 25, 1975, through Columbia Records. Co-produced by Springsteen with his manager Mike Appel and the producer Jon Landau, its recording took place in New York. Following the commercial failures of his first two albums, the album marked Springsteen's effort to break into the mainstream and create a commercially successful album. Springsteen sought to emulate Phil Spector's Wall of Sound production, leading to prolonged sessions with the E Street Band lasting from January 1974 to July 1975; six months alone were spent working on the title track.

Maybe tonight Metal After Dark should feature a few recommended albums since this is an album countdown?

My daughter has a friend over tonight so I will be hiding and listening to music while watching the Marniers dominate. I'll even try Dan's weird alien **** he is talking about.
Don’t forget Puscifer
Not metal though

I've listened to all the albums. Not my thing. Neither is Townsend, but I've never heard of the alien album, so i will give a listen (or at least a start ;) )

Here’s a few others I’d recommend

Dopethrone by Electric Wizard - Doom / Stoner Metal

When The Kite String Pops by Acid Bath - 90s Sludge Metal with a huge cult following. Reminds me of Sabbath with Jim Morrison on vocals but some screaming too

Absolute Elsewhere by Blood Incantation - kind of a progressive death metal album, definitely meant to be listened to as a full album

We should save it for nightside, gb. Don't want to clog main countdown up.

Listen to some sweet Stevie Wonder grooves in the am.

I'm no Springsteen fan and don't have a say here, but I'd be all over Jungleland for the playlist. Just an immense song - IMO Clarence puts forth one of the best, most emotional sax performances in rock history here.

I could offer up a song suggestion, but @Dennis Castro would probably pick something else just to spite me. But the joke would be on him, as there really is no wrong choice on this album. 🙃

For schtick, I was really tempted to add Sweet Child O Mine

My top three were: Welcome to the Jungle, My Michelle and Mr. Brownstone.

Coinflip between My Michelle and Mr. Brownstone came up: My Michelle

Of course I had sort of a ninth-grade thing for a girl named Michelle and this album helped soundtrack my life back then so . . . I don't know what that means, but I thought of her bluish eyeshadow just now, and oof did I grow up in the most upper-est lower middle class town in the late '80s, man.

The title track is one of my all-time favorites but the entire album is great southern rock. The rollicking "Around the Block" starts the album off in full force and it never lets down.

I mentioned my Morning Mantra playlist in the last MAD Artists thread and "Let's Go Dancing" which speaks to vast underdogs not backing down from superior forces was one of the 9 songs on it: "Lets go dancing...said the firefly to the hurricane".

565. You Had to Be There: Recorded Live – Jimmy Buffet
This album came out in 1978, and was before all the Parrothead stuff. It was recorded at the Fox in Atlanta in '78, and he was playing with a broken leg, which he changed some lyrics in songs to add that in. It's one of those records I've had on vinyl, cassette, and cd. I love it. This cast is no blast, but it's coming off fast, and I feel like I'm pulling a trailer, Yeah!

565. Monk's Dream - Theolonious Monk
I understand why I'm the only one that ranked Monk. From Google AI:
The term "discordant" in relation to Thelonious Monk's music, and specifically his album "Monk's Dream", refers to the unconventional and sometimes jarring harmonies and rhythms he employed, which can sound dissonant or even "wrong" to some listeners. This was a deliberate stylistic choice, not a result of technical errors. Monk's music was highly original and defied easy categorization, even for those familiar with the jazz idiom.

Great choice. I’m a Backstreets guy but this album has a few prime options.

I am very surprised that Jailbreak only got 1 vote. Did Thin Lizzy get completely shut out of the countdown??

They have turned into my favorite 70s band.
I saw that and felt a little bad for you knowing you had hopes they were still going to appear.

Also I’m pretty sure that’s the second time that Vampire Weekend album has appeared as my 1 vote choice lol
