317 (tie). Bows + Arrows – The Walkman (87 points)

@Scoresman #26
@Dreaded Marco #46
@rockaction #54

Bows + Arrows is the second studio album by the American rock band the Walkmen, released on February 3, 2004, by Record Collection.
The album was self-produced aside from one song, "The Rat," produced by Dave Sardy. The album received a great deal of critical acclaim, appearing on several critics' year-end lists. "Little House of Savages" and "What's in It for Me" were both included on hit FOX teen drama The O.C. "The Rat" was named Pitchfork's No. 6 single of the year. "The Rat" was selected for the playlist on the video game Major League Baseball 2K7. "The Rat" was listed at No. 20 on Pitchfork's top 500 songs of the 2000s and at No. 13 on NME's top 100 songs of the 2000s.
I had a tough time choosing between this and their first album, Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone, but ultimately the consistency of Bow + Arrows won out. Every song is good to great. Another excellent live show as well.

Since all the songs are great it doesn't matter to me which @Scoresman chooses, but I'd probably go with Little House of Savages, The Rat, New Year's Eve or Thinking of a Dream I Had :-)

Help me out Doc. I'm getting sucked into other threads I have no desire to be in. What's next on the list? Throw me a Bone (Mother Love or Thugs and Harmony, I don't care)
Walk away from the dr threads and fire up a few albums listed you haven't heard before. ;)
Yeah, I've decided not to get into those types of threads ever again---not good for my blood pressure.

Smash is the third studio album by American rock band the Offspring, released on April 8, 1994, through Epitaph Records. After touring in support of their previous album Ignition (1992), the band recorded their next album for nearly two months at Track Record in North Hollywood, California. Smash was the band's final studio album to be produced by Thom Wilson, who had worked with them since their 1989 debut album The Offspring. Smash was put together on the spot in the studio and there was no systematic work behind the recording of the album.

absolute banger no skip album for me that I played all through high school and college

Just listened to it again on a road trip a few weeks ago

Title track Smash is probably my favorite despite Come Out and Play and Self Esteem being the biggest hits

Head over heels I've fit in before
Now I don't want to do it no more
I just want to be who I want to be
Guess that's hard for others to see

I'm not a trendy *******
I do what I want
I do what I feel like
I'm not a trendy *******
I don't give a ****
If it's good enough for you

Bad Habit is a good driving song

Gotta Get Away another good one

First album and artist that I've never heard of.
There’s a movie Searching for Sugar Man about him, definitely an interesting tale

So far, I've discovered one album I overlooked that for sure would have cracked my top-20, and probably would have been top 5. ...from a one-hit wonder, no less.
It's the Ghostbusters soundtrack, isn't it?
No, but it was the flagship song for a certain soundtrack. I may not answer to more guesses, so as not to spotlight what surely someone else picked.
Arrgh! I already had 2 live albums and a studio album that I totally overlooked. Now there is a soundtrack album that I surely overlooked as well (not Ghostbusters...)

Up to Here is the debut studio album by Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip, released in September 1989. It is one of the band's most successful albums, achieving diamond status in Canada for sales of over a million copies, earning the band a Juno Award for Most Promising Artist, and also introduced fan-favorite songs such as "Blow at High Dough", "New Orleans Is Sinking", and "Boots or Hearts". The album reached No. 13 on RPM's Canadian Albums Chart, and both "Blow at High Dough" and "New Orleans is Sinking" reached No. 1 on the RPM Canadian Content singles charts.

To be sure I spoke correctly, the song I had in mind is featured on a soundtrack, but the album I whiffed on is the original studio release, decades before the movie.

Regarding soundtracks: I'll bet there is one that towers over the rest in this countdown.

And I second the recommendation for Searching For Sugarman. One of my favorite documentaries and an absolutely fascinating story.

Okonokos is a live album and concert film by the American band My Morning Jacket released on October 31, 2006. The album was recorded during the band's fall 2005 Z Tour, over two nights at The Fillmore in San Francisco, California. This is the first My Morning Jacket album for which frontman Jim James does not receive a production credit; he is credited for "concept/story".
Love MMJ but other than their latest release I don’t think I’ve listened to a full album by them, usually just shuffle their entire catalog

Caught them live last year, amazing show, would definitely see them again.
I LOVE their first 4 albums but haven't felt quite the same about the last 5 ( I haven't yet listened to their new album from a few months ago, though). They still put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen, including my #1 concert experience of all time while touring for It Still Moves. It was such a great show that I changed my work schedule so I could drive from SLC to SF to see them 2 nights later.

Their live prowess along with the fact that Okonokos was recorded just after their 4th album, Z, is the reason I chose this rather than one of the studio albums. They are great on record but even better live and this album covers all those bases.

I've seen a lot of bands live. MMJ is top 5 performer.

306 (tie). Electric – The Cult (90 points)

@Nick Vermeil #6
@Tau837 #46

Electric is the third album by British rock band the Cult, released in 1987. It was the follow-up to their commercial breakthrough Love. The album equaled its predecessor's chart placing by peaking at number four in the UK but exceeded its chart residency, spending a total of 27 weeks on the chart (the most successful run for an album by The Cult).
The album marked a deliberate stylistic change in the band's sound from gothic rock to more traditional hard rock. Rick Rubin, the producer on Electric, had been specifically hired to remake the band's sound in an effort to capitalize on the popularity of hard rock, glam metal and heavy metal in the 1980s. The album was featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Between the two well-known songs, I lean Day After Day over Baby Blue.
I was hoping that Breaking Bad's use of "Baby Blue" would give Badfinger the much-deserved renaissance it deserved, much like The Sopranos' use of "Don't Stop Believing" did for Journey. Didn't seem to happen, but so be it - BF still have us fans.
They also used Crystal Blue Persuasion to good effect. But I can't say I was a huge fan of The Ballad of Heisenberg.

Crystal Blue Persuasion and a discussion of Boz Scaggs are the only music I remember from Breaking Bad. I dont know if they did the best job handling the soundtrack of the show. But maybe I’m in the minority on that.

BB wasn’t a very music/soundtrack heavy show IIRC. Some of the intense acting was silent and perhaps music would have detracted from it. Just pure speculation about Vince Gilligan though.

Nice really glad I wasn’t the only one to include this. This is a cornerstone jazz album as good as any other that might make the list. Anyone getting into jazz should make Saxophone Colossus a priority listen.

When do we get to bands I've heard of?

Weren't you one of the "complainers" that thought the list would be all Beatles and Zeppelin?
I had assumed that the top would be a lot of chalk, yes but I was never really complaining about it. (I know that you know) I have heard of some of these but some I haven't.

Yes I put complainers in quotes because you weren’t really complaining. “Worried”
Is a better word and even that’s too strong.

The chalk really doesn’t come until Top 50 and even that has a few albums that aren’t that chalky.

I listened to this album for the first time when walking my dog today. It’s probably not one Id return to often, as it’s a little too heavy for my current tastes but I really liked it and will probably add a few songs like “The Rat” (which is fantastic) and “138th Street” to some playlists.

I listened to this album for the first time when walking my dog today. It’s probably not one Id return to often, as it’s a little too heavy for my current tastes but I really liked it and will probably add a few songs like “The Rat” (which is fantastic) and “138th Street” to some playlists.
Listened to The Rat on the way home. Meh. I’ll try some of the others
