Consensus Top 350 Albums of All-Time: 34. Thriller – Michael Jackson (186 Viewers)

I'm admittedly wildly inconsistent in terms of whether I can separate the art from the artist. I can't really enjoy child rapist Woody Allen's movies anymore, but I still like child rapist Roman Polanski's. It's easy to avoid child rapist Ted Nugent's music since it's garbage anyway. I really struggle with child rapist Michael Jackson, though. Somehow I've convinced myself that I can listen to Jackson 5 because he probably wasn't a child rapist yet, but I just can't do his adult records anymore. This despite being absolutely a gigantic fan of both Thriller and Off the Wall in my formative years. To those who didn't experience it, there is no way to describe the earthquake that was Thriller. Maybe not as obvious to those who weren't there for it is that most every girl (at least those I knew) had a huge crush on him (my crush was on Prince instead). What we learned later was heartbreaking.

Oh, and @Dan Lambskin might be interested to know that our Bulldolls did a routine to Thriller that absolutely crushed. We brought it back the next year because it would bring the house down.

The Nuge is a world class ******* and yeah IIRC he had a thing for younger chicks (I mean he has a song called Jailbait), but Stranglehold and Fred Bear are great songs and I’ll still rock out to them, but yeah I have soured on him and another similar douchebag from Michigan who’s biggest album I ranked pretty high

Also not saying it’s right or wrong but times were different back then. Didn’t they put 13 year old Brooke Shields on a magazine cover and tout her has Americas next sex symbol or something like that? Winger singing about banging a 17 year seems tame in comparison but equally gross. Anyway I’m glad our society has at least made some progress there

My wife was on the Pom Pom squad and also did a thriller routine. I don’t think they had a fancy moniker like the BullDolls though. We were the Cougars though but I don’t think that word had the same connotation as it does now. Unfortunately she also had to do a routine to Hey Mickey or whatever that Toni Basil song is called. She hated that one
My argument is I am not sure the sentiment has gone away, maybe just gone more underground? Those examples are all true, but recently I have been listening to a great movie podcast - You Must Remember This. That season's topic was "The Erotic 90s" and some of the stuff she was reminding me of from the fetishizing of Brittny Spears to an underage Alicia Silverstone in the Aerosmith videos to articles in prominent magazines like "7 actresses we are willing to wait for". :x We say WTF was going on in the 70s with Shields, but it was also right under our noses as we were coming of age as well. Maybe we are improving a little out in the open, but there are still examples I seen in the 2020s that makes me think we haven't that much from the oversexualizing of girls in pageants and dance teams to weird incestual trends in "adult entertainment" (don't you all pretend you don't know what I am talking about!) to big cases like Weinstein and Epstein. I often feel we are a culture that talks out of both sides of our mouths on this issue - it is truly bizarre to me.

As far as the disconnect with artists with histories like Jackson and others, I agree with krista that it can be inconsistent in application. For me a lot has to do with the crime and how directly the art I am consuming is related to the artist. For example, I would have less issues watching a movie with Cosby in it because 100s of people also put their time and effort into that art, but there is no chance I would see a stand up that is just him or read a book he wrote. Polanski is another example - I will still watch one of his movies, but I struggle listening to Michael Jackson solo works and giving those clicks.
And this is one of the reasons I love Jim Croce. He met his eventual wife when she was 16 and he was 20. He knew she wasn't old enough to make a life choice like that, so he waited for her to grow up and have life experience before they dated. It's the subject of his song, "A Long Time Ago".

Music KP and Movie KP seem like different people.
Lol. How so?
movie snob
-----------------
metal head
Gotcha.

I get what you are saying and what I start to ramble about, but I think when we unleash the movie picks you will be surprised how not snobby many of my picks are. I have been surprised as well, but I also lean to horror a lot, especially when you can mix that with some humor. Mostly I just don't like typical blockbuster action movies - those will be in short supply.

I do talk a lot about metal here, and that was my core in MS. I have rekindled that love in the past decade or so, but it is still mostly a few bands that I listen to a lot - Opeth and Mastodon are at the top of the current rotation. But if you look at my full list at the end it is a lot of 70s and 90s rock. Desert island style, if was grabbing bands it would currently look something like: Opeth, Radiohead, Lord Huron, Pearl Jam, Thin Lizzy, People Under the Stairs, CCR, Beck, Pink Floyd, and Aimee Mann at the start. Those are the artists I have the highest hit % with albums and their music and that is a pretty wide range.

I would say I am more of a movie snob than I am a metal head, despite my daily dad uniform of jeans, metal tshirt, and Mariners cap.

Lord Huron - Strange Trails (2015) - 67pts

Fellow MAD31ers and participants in song drafts will not be surprised by this. I have been a huge fan of this album since it came out. I remember hearing Meet Me in the Woods and being instantly hooked and started listening to this album a ton. My wife and I saw them live with Nathaniel Rateliff and despite liking the showmanship of Rateliff, it solidified that we both were drawn to Lord Huron's music much more. A blend of rock and folk, lots of songs of lost loves and connections, all while evoking a sense of a cosmic plan and manipulation. It is not a concept album, but all their albums beg to be played from start to finish as the songs blend and flow together. It originally was conceived of as a movie or a series of movies (which is very much reflected in the videos they made for the album and their stage presentation) Obviously one of my favorite albums of the 21st century. I have recommend this album and band to so many people, and since I didn't think it was on the countdown it was going to be album #1 on my recommended listening list at the end of the countdown for anybody who hasn't tried it. I was going to go with a deeper track, but unless @shuke has a stronger pull for a song, I will go with the obvious Meet Me in the Woods since it was the one that started my love for this fantastic band.

Nice writeup. This has been my wife's favorite band since she heard "Ends of the Earth" in a movie she was watching with my son about 10-12 years ago. So naturally they've really grown on me. We've seen them 10 times now in 6 different states. This Friday will be our 11th.

Great choice for the playlist, it's one of my favorite songs by any band to see live.

KP what’s your thoughts on artists who do a bunch of covers for their live shows? Billy strings does a ton (did Nutshell when I saw him), Jamey Johnson*, Tedeschi* Trucks, Sturgil and a bunch of others. Maybe it’s more of a jam thing?

*Probably should have found a spot for these two on my Top 100 Vocalists, but while I really like both I’m just not super familiar with specific songs of theirs

Album title checks out.

Prices coming down a bit maybe I can talk the wife into going last minute (still like $110 or more but if I can get us in under $250 I’d probably do it)

Problem is I have about 400 sq ft of vinyl flooring to lay that day. If I make good progress and I’m not exhausted maybe I can make it work

Hoping to at least catch one of these this month

Lord Huron
NIN
Black Keys / Gary Clark Jr. (im more in it for Gary but wife mentions black keys so easier sell)

long shot : Coheed and Cambria. Same night as NIN don’t know anyone who likes them though. They opened for Slipknot years ago, very proggy metal stuff but I don’t really like the singers vocals. I can tolerate them in small doses though but it’s too…(whiney maybe?) for me

It’s interesting though basically their entire discography is a series of concept albums telling an overall story. I’ve never really paid attention to the lyrics but I might have to start from the beginning. There’s also comics and novels I guess?

I am all on board with artists doing what they want and people loving what they love. It's probably not a show I would personally enjoy a ton, unless it's a band that is known for doing covers and I knew that going in. If I went to an Opeth show and they decided that night to do a set list of covers I'd be a bit crabby. I have a fine line when it comes to prog and stuff, and that doesn't seem to include jam bands - it's not my thing. I like meandering songs to a point, but tap out at 15+ min instrumentals and medley jams.

Like I said, I don't mind and often like a cover during a live set as artists show some of their loves and influences - PJ and Lord Huron doing Neil Young covers, for example, but that's about it. I don't like them in the middle of albums - it's more of a b-sides thing for me or on a tribute album of covers from artists. Most times I just tend to prefer the originals and don't purposely seek them out.

Dammit, I also forgot one of my favorite songs from my Journey MAD31 and realizing that was a Beatles cover. That ended up being my #5 from them and my favorite from that album:

I am not anti-cover, just prefer a very tiny sprinkling of them in my listening.

See I’d like to get baked and do an all weekend jam festival of nothing but covers , but that’s not the lifestyle I live so I’ll just take it in small doses

I like attending jam bands live but I don’t really like listening to live jam band recordings. I will do sirrius 30x or whatever it is on long drives. Helps me discover new bands

New Year's Eve 2004 into 2005, I went to MSG to see Wilco, the Flaming Lips and Sleater-Kinney. After the ball dropped at midnight, Wilco ran off a string of 5 straight covers*. When it was done, Jeff Tweedy said "Congrats, you paid 50 bucks to see a cover band!"

* - Livin' After Midnight, Love Will Keep Us Together, Political Science, I Shall Be Released, Something in the Air. Later during the encore, they covered Don't Fear the Reaper, Gut Feeling/Slap Your Mammy and Comment (If All Men Are Truly Brothers). The Flaming Lips covered War Pigs in their set.

My wife is going to NIN in a few weeks in Minneapolis without me. I hesitated because in general concerts aren't 100% my thing. I love going because that is usually our date night, but in general I hate crowds and hate people on their phones in crowds. I connect with music much more with my headphones on and relaxing while playing an album, where she feeds off of and needs that connection with the artists. Anyway, I haven't loved much from NIN in years so I wasn't sure I wanted to participate in that one. I will just stick with my memory of seeing them on the Downward Spiral tour and being blown away.

I'm kicking myself a little for not pulling the trigger on Dinosaur Jr. tickets, but they also seem to play songs that aren't my favorites so again I waffled and decided not to go.

we’re opposites. I’d go see live music every night. I can probably get my wife to 25% of the shows I’d like to see (she’s an introvert/ hates leaving the house)

Needs to be someone she likes (fair enough)
Standing room only venues are a tough sell (leaves out a lot of smaller bands).

Lawn is a no go (im not a fan myself)

Then add in any crowds, people standing up, weirdos next to us, too long of a show, etc

She’s still a trooper though and get her out enough

My kids super into metal (he reinvigorated my love for it). He’s introduced me to a lot of good stuff . Wish he’d branch out a bit though and go to some other shows the wife won’t. Pretty limited to metal / punk right now

Hopefully creating some good memories taking him to shows, but he’s getting old enough to go on his own. Let him drive downtown on his own the other day for a small club show

Did you give him a curfew or is it unspoken? I blew my first concert curfew on a school night. Disaster. Senior year and grounded for a week. Oof. Grounded? What on earth do you tell your friends? Anyway, that's cool. Did he have a good time?

Yep, i am more in line with your S.O. I'd rather sit, outdoor festivals are a no-go, i get grumpy when too many people are holding up their phones, i don't like spending more than $50 unless it's a favorite band, etc. I am happy seeing 4-5 shows a year, my wife would probably go 2x a week.

He’s a good kid and we have life 360 to track him. I don’t really enforce any curfew. He’s almost 17. I didn’t have any restrictions at that age (i basically lived alone since I was 14)

Granted we’re like 20 minutes from downtown Detroit and this was in an easier to get to place with parking right across the street.

He’s basically doing marching band and theatre 12 hours a day right now so I’m sure he had fun but I don’t get too much more than a “yeah” to my did you have fun question

That went well. I reckon I'll give it a go again tomorrow. I like them. At this moment, I really like them.
