Consensus Top 350 Albums of All-Time: 180. Rust Never Sleeps – Neil Young and Crazy Horse (175 Viewers)

I was thinking about doing one of these consensus rankings for all-time basketball players, but I’m already having nightmares on the consolidation of the lists with all the different spellings and misspellings.

That would be a hell of an unidentified dead person countdown, too.

693. Still Bill – Bill Withers (pip’s invitation ranked #23)
Still Bill is Bill Withers' second and best album. It has no weak tracks and almost every song on it appears on either his greatest hits album or his Live at Carnegie Hall album. The production is lean and crisp, the backing band is gritty and funky, and many of Withers' finest accomplishments as a songwriter and as a vocalist are found on this record. It was Withers' best-selling album, hitting #1 on the Soul charts and #4 on the Pop charts in 1972. It has been included on both "1,000 albums to hear before you die" lists (The Guardian's and Tom Moon's) and on the 2020 edition of the album version of the Rolling Stone Garbage List.

For the playlist I added "Use Me," which I took in the This Is Their Best Song draft and which encapsulates pretty much everything that made Withers an exceptional artist. It hit #2 on the Soul and Pop charts in 1972.

The album also features "Lean on Me," Withers' only #1 hit (on both the Soul and Pop charts) and one of the few songs to have two versions hit #1 (Club Nouveau's cover accomplished this in 1987).

I'm also partial to the heavy shuffle of album opener "Lonely Town, Lonely Street".

@KarmaPolice - I decided to add Big Empty to the playlist instead of Dancing Days. Decided to go with one of the big hitters over a song that wasn’t on the original release.

428. Indian Summer – Carbon Leaf (Idiot Boxer ranked #7)

This is the one I had most confidence in being unlisted (I said 8, but had my numbering off)
For the playlist I'd recommend one of: Life Less Ordinary, What About Everything? or One Prairie Outpost
went with the bold. Real nice song. Will prob listen to more later.
506. Strange Little Girls – Tori Amos (Brutal Penguin ranked #12)
A great collection of covers done from Tori's female perspective. "I Don't Like Mondays" and "Enjoy the Silence" stand out to me.
went with that. Not really my thing though.
357. Panic Prevention – Jamie T (kupcho1 ranked #2) (also received 5 points from Nick V)
I "outrank" @Nick Vermeil on this one, so I'll select:

I love the lyrics, but especially the spoke word
Good heavens, you boys!
Blue blooded murder of the English tongue
Bluh!
not the biggest hip hop fan but I enjoyed it.
543. The Royal Scam – Steely Dan (Zamboni ranked #14)
Steely Dan is pretty polarizing around here - some love them and some hate them. I'm obviously in the former camp and this album is the one that has always resonated with me most.

For a song selection, going with the opening track "Kid Charlemagne" with killer guitar work by the legendary Larry Carlton.

really liked the solo(s) but overall I can't say I'm a huge fan of the song. Also my youtube is on auto play and Do It Again came on after and I like that better, so does Mrs. Punt
381. The Sky is Crying – Stevie Ray Vaughn (Psychopav ranked #2)
)
Well it didn't take long for me to be surprised. With so many unique albums on my list I guess I shouldn't be.

For anyone who hasn't heard it, SRV's version of Little Wing is a phenomenal track.
It grows on you, or at least it did on me. Really didn't care for it at first but after 2 minutes I think it picks up. Very relaxing.
447. Curtis – Curtis Mayfield (Don Quixote ranked #8)

I am surprised that I am the only vote for Curtis, but maybe another of Curtis Mayfield’s albums will show up on this list. The Middle-Aged Dummies here probably could have figured that he’d show up high for me (here’s my MAD playlist of my 31 favorite Mayfield songs, ordered 31-1).

Curtis was his first solo album after he left The Impressions. After all of his message songs with The Impressions, this album represented more of his anger about the failures of the civil rights movement, and moved away from some of the soul/R&B sounds of The Impressions to more of a funk sound. Lots of great songs on this album.

I had “(Don’t Worry) If There’s a Hell Below, We’re All Going to Go” (Spotify) #1 in my MAD playlist, and it is still my favorite with the grittier lyrics.

But @KarmaPolice , for the playlist here, I’ll go a bit more uplifting with the chalkier pick of “Move on Up” (Spotify). (ETA: Just added myself.)
I liked the drum solo outro but that's about all.
428. De Stijil – The White Stripes (Dan Lambskin ranked #7)
Nobody else likes The White Stripes or just overlooking their best album?
I like them or at least their big hits like 7 Nation Army and Hardest Button to Button (also love the video) but as will be a constant from me, I haven't listed to many full albums.
@KarmaPolice add Down by the River for my Live at Massey Hall. Much obliged.
really like the guitar solo that starts @ 2 mins but that's pretty much all.
428. The Ghosts That Haunt Me – Crash Test Dummies (Barry2 ranked #7)
On this album you'll here guitars, piano, mandolin, banjo, accordion, cello, violin. Biggest single was Superman's Song. It has a really good cover of The Replacements track Androgynous.

Comin Back Soon (The Bereft Man's Song)

Mornings we have toast and tea
I gaze across the table, she glares right back at me
And when we're getting low on jam
I give her the last spoonful, that's just the way I am
And I drive her to work each day
Even though it's early and work is far away
And I don't even say a thing
When she plays the radio so loud you cannot think
what is this? can't say I liked this at all.
@KarmaPolice Can you please add Shadowboxer from Tidal? Thank you sir.
didn't really care for it, Criminal is better I think.
Please add Oh Yeah from Tago Mago. Thanks.

it grows on you but I didn't feel like it was all that good.
I guess my selection will be "Soul of the Sea".
sorry. please don't hate me

Life Less Ordinary by Carbon Leaf
Little Wing by Stevie Ray Vaugn
Shelia by Jamie T
Down by the River by Neil Young
Oh Yeah by Can
Move on Up by Curtis Mayfield
Kid Charlemagne by Steely Dan
Shadowboxer by Fiona Apple
Soul of the Sea by Heart
Coming Back Soon by The Crash Test Dummies
Enjoy the Silence by Tori Amos

446. The Great Fantasy Adventure Album - Erich Kunzel & the Cincinnati Pops (Val R ranked #8)

I fell in love with Telarc classical recordings back when I was an electronics salesman in the late 1980s. We had access to some Telarc sampler disks to demo speakers, and the recording quality was phenomenal - the "Telarc Sound" was a real thing. Over the years, I've purchased many of their CDs, but this one is my all time favorite. So many great tracks (Jurassic Park, Robin Hood, The Rocketeer, Total Recall, Conan the Barbarian, The Hunt for Red October, The Terminator...), not to mention potentially speaker damaging special effects. Spotify's versions have had the dynamic range of the CD ripped out, so no caution stickers are needed like with the original - sad but true. Here is an awesome track for your listening pleasure, complete with the original sound effect track lead in - Cybergenesis + the Theme from "Terminator". (Note the tuned anvil - they needed it for Anvil of Crom from Conan, might as well get their money's worth!)

@KarmaPolice , please add this to the playlist?

Trip’s Rating:

Appropriately Ranked

Dreamboat Annie by Heart is one that would have made my list if we had gone 100 deep, but at 70, it was one for which I just couldn't find a spot. Great album, though, their finest easily.

I am not surprised that my number 3 album got no other mentions, but The Similitude of a Dream by Neal Morse Band is that good for me. Seeing it performed live from start to finish twice helped as well. Many double concept albums suffer from padding, but that is one that is riveting and awesome for the whole ride.

Maybe you have to be on a desktop to add to the playlist? I don’t know.

Can someone add Instant Crush by Daft Punk?

I don’t have Spotify but if someone wants a song from De Stijl go with Little Bird

Everything is great on there though no skips for me although it is only like 37 minutes

381(Tie). Beauty and the Beat - The Go-Go’s (70 points)

@rockaction #1 :headbang:

Beauty and the Beat is the debut album from California new wave band the Go-Go's. Released July 14, 1981 on the I.R.S. Records label, the album reached number one on Billboard's Top LPs & Tape chart in March 1982, bolstered by its two big Hot 100 hit singles: "Our Lips Are Sealed" (no. 20) and "We Got the Beat" (no. 2), released in 1980, but in a different version.

I'd stick with one also. I'd recommend "How Much More" or "This Town" by The Go-Go's, who I'm surprised didn't get any votes for top seventy anywhere else. I know ilov80s said something to the effect that he might have, but I'm still a little surprised. In fact, I deleted a comment earlier about my number one not getting any other votes because I was a bit sure it would.

Oh well. No stunner. Mild surprise. Especially with Zegras11 lurking around the joint.
Dude...This is liking ranking Bryce Young as the #1 one QB....not this year, all time.

Music is not quantifiable like sports. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.

543. Holy Diver – Dio (Mt. Man ranked #18)

I'm sure that veterans of the 3rd Middle-Aged Dummies countdowns will be less than stunned that I had a Dio album this high. Especially Holy Diver, considering how it did there (see also below). Though Ronnie James Dio had made a name for himself as part of other bands (he said, without spotlighting) by then, it's difficult to think of 1983's "Holy Diver" as anything but a breakthrough album. At least in my heart it's a metal staple, and an album that pulled in the direction of metal and expanding my tastes once I started to collect my own music. Speaking of which, I gave the albums that I (still) have a physical copy of a small boost, and obviously this is one of them. It's probable that the last time I listened to the (entire) album was in preparation for that M-AD countdown, but at least I can honestly say that it's one that I return to every now and again.

Top 31 Rankings from my M-AD countdown for songs from this album:
#2: Rainbow in the Dark
#4: Don't Talk to Strangers
#6: Holy Diver
#15: Caught in the Middle
#24: Straight Through the Heart

And that's without giving some love to... pretty much the rest of the album. This is the classic Dio lineup, Ronnie on vocals and keyboards, Vinny Appice on drums, Jimmy Bain on bass and Vivian Campbell on guitar. Though it was before the band would add Claude Schnell to take over on keyboards and let Ronnie focus on singing.

As an aside it looks like I was able to successfully add "Rainbow in the Dark" to the playlist.

Pretty sure this is going to push JC Superstar into the top 50... :shades:
He ranked it at 41. So 30 more points.
I added the title track but since we both had it at 41 I say he should add a track as well. It's a Super Twofer!
I, for one, look forward to the eventual 31,000 song playlist.
Yeah, we should keep it to 1x/album.

Besides, this is a damn album draft- people should be listening to the albums, not the playlist. ;)

I'm sooooo tempted to say "King Herod's Song", but somehow that would just be... wrong. Therefore, second selection is:

ps: Superstar is actually fine, let's not make Doc Ock's head explode.

I’m definitely going to listen to many of albums, but would take an eternity to get through them all. Good to have a teaser song for less familiar ones to help focus.

Fair. I was going to suggest dice roll or working it out somehow.

A more direct way is to say i agree with doc we do 1/album. I am not here to police it, but i won't add more than 1 myself. I suggested a playlist so people could have a small preview of tone or type of music on the album, but my comment above applies and people should listen to albums for an album draft.

Yep, i agree. See post above.

I am going to try to get through a lot of albums drafted that I've never listened to. I got through 5 today, so off to a good start!
