Consensus Top 350 Albums of All-Time: 185. Odelay – Beck (174 Viewers)

after finding another error (2 people took "White Album" instead of "The White Album" and deleting one duplicated line we're down to 351 songs on the Top 360.
Did anyone go with The Beatles?
He asked us not to, so if anyone did, it means they don’t read his posts.
I call it SoZo
You're the only one. It's untitled. They are just screwing with us.

@Dr. Octopus
I went with:
Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin II
Led Zeppelin III
Led Zeppelin IV

Pretty sure this is going to push JC Superstar into the top 50... :shades:
He ranked it at 41. So 30 more points.
I added the title track but since we both had it at 41 I say he should add a track as well. It's a Super Twofer!
I, for one, look forward to the eventual 31,000 song playlist.
Yeah, we should keep it to 1x/album.

Besides, this is a damn album draft- people should be listening to the albums, not the playlist. ;)
I’m definitely going to listen to many of albums, but would take an eternity to get through them all. Good to have a teaser song for less familiar ones to help focus.
Yep, i agree. See post above.

I am going to try to get through a lot of albums drafted that I've never listened to. I got through 5 today, so off to a good start!
You have a lot of time on your hands (guessing not a spotlight here). And I mean that as a compliment. 👍

I never did get my list submitted but of the albums listed so far, Red Headed Stranger was in my top 5. Willie's guitar work on that album moved me spiritually. Too bad I can't be in Austin for his show tomorrow.
It's stitched into me thanks Dad's 8-track collection and countless road trips across the West Texas outback (Coahoma, Hi!). It's a single track if you ask me.

A preview song also really helps if you've never heard of an artist, and i am sure that will happen a lot in here. If it is something outside my comfort zone or someone i have a bias towards, I need to be prepared to give it an honest listen.

381(Tie). Beauty and the Beat - The Go-Go’s (70 points)

@rockaction #1 :headbang:

Beauty and the Beat is the debut album from California new wave band the Go-Go's. Released July 14, 1981 on the I.R.S. Records label, the album reached number one on Billboard's Top LPs & Tape chart in March 1982, bolstered by its two big Hot 100 hit singles: "Our Lips Are Sealed" (no. 20) and "We Got the Beat" (no. 2), released in 1980, but in a different version.

I'd stick with one also. I'd recommend "How Much More" or "This Town" by The Go-Go's, who I'm surprised didn't get any votes for top seventy anywhere else. I know ilov80s said something to the effect that he might have, but I'm still a little surprised. In fact, I deleted a comment earlier about my number one not getting any other votes because I was a bit sure it would.

Oh well. No stunner. Mild surprise. Especially with Zegras11 lurking around the joint.
Dude...This is liking ranking Bryce Young as the #1 one QB....not this year, all time.

There's a saying in radio that any song playing is someone's favorite song.

It's a good album. If that's his #1, it's as valid as any other.

I usually listen to an album as i wake up and have coffee. I have a boring job that allows me about 2hours of listening in the am so i can get through 1-2 more albums there, and when i am at home, more often than not music is going. 4-5 hours a day of music is typical.

I tend to go on artist deep dives and go through albums, but will also listen to the MAD31 playlist and other stuff (Genrepalooza4).

I added Beauty to my iTunes library this morning for future listening. As with others, they’re a band that I’ve come to appreciate more with the current MAD countdown.

Exactly. Embrace the variety of people's tastes and give the music a listen! No wrong answers here, but for my tastes I liked his selection more than the other #1s I listened to this morning. All had great music, but rock's album clicked the most so far.

And right back at you that I thought you might have ranked RAM by Daft Punk. Perhaps you have an earlier album of theirs.

Only one album per artist for me unless group and solo. So . . . yeah. They might still be there later.

Also, for those wondering how The Go-Go’s wound up number one, it was a process of using Ranker Engine and I chose to select by the process of what I wanted to hear that particular day and with momentum. Is it my favorite of all-time in listening hours? No. But it’s a damn good album and it was a sunny SoCal breeze-filled day and you tell me about number one records with that backdrop.

That is a lot more lighthearted than it sounds, but it is a great album, in my estimation.

@BassNBrew

eta* also, I was ready for comments and had already thought of why and how, so no big deal whatsoever. I could have ranked a Woody Allen comedy album or something . . .

Yup. I didn't put this one in my top 70, but I do own the vinyl and like it a lot. It could have easily replaced almost anything from 35-70 for me. I did my list in an hour, and half of it might be totally different if I did the list again today.

I’m using it to drown out fireworks in my town tonight because my dog hates them. The fireworks, not the Go-Go’s.

It’s such a fun album and still sounds and feels fresh 40 years later.

I don’t see why that couldn’t be some one’s favorite album.

I’m not going to promise to listen to every album but I’m going to try out a bunch of them. I do listen to a lot of music, like KP, as well, but that’s overly ambitious for me.

I probably would go as far as to say i will start any album that is drafted i haven't listened to before. I can't promise i won't bail on some of those. This is fun, not homework, and it's ok to dislike things.

Music is not quantifiable like sports. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.
Just having some fun with @rockaction I do find it funny that we can crack on each other in any ranking category such as movies or TV but music is off limits.

Just having some fun with @rockaction

All good, GB. I sincerely do understand after all these years and I'm cool with it. You're just busting chops, and it's not a totally illegitimate criticism.

I do find it funny that we can crack on each other in any ranking category such as movies or TV but music is off limits

For whatever reason, it seems like people are more sensitive about music and any perceived musical judgments. That's my experience. If you think that say, for instance, the comedy you like didn't strike somebody else as funny, you might wonder what is wrong with your own tastes, but if that same person that gave you pause about your comedy taste can't see the genius of Album A, then there must be something wrong with the other person.

Just seems to be how it goes.

I assumed thumper rule was more a thing during the mad activities because of the time commitment and creating playlists. People are more likely to listen to everything vs a countdown format.

I could be wrong, but i think that music is also more personal to people than a movie or tv show is.
I think it is too. And the members of this board -- almost all of whom are middle-aged white men -- seem to have more diverse tastes in music than in movies or TV.

we are more diverse than you'd expect. We grew up.

Like in high school (for me, early 80's), what you liked (and didn't like) in music was almost part of your identity. If you were a metal kid, you almost had to dislike Michael Jackson or the Go Go's or whoever.

Heh, I'll never forget my friend's older brother (about 26) telling us narrow-minded metal-loving high school juniors "c'mon guys, you can admit Thriller is good". He was right (although I like Off the Wall better)

428. Indian Summer – Carbon Leaf (Idiot Boxer ranked #7)

This is the one I had most confidence in being unlisted (I said 8, but had my numbering off)
For the playlist I'd recommend one of: Life Less Ordinary, What About Everything? or One Prairie Outpost
went with the bold. Real nice song. Will prob listen to more later.
506. Strange Little Girls – Tori Amos (Brutal Penguin ranked #12)
A great collection of covers done from Tori's female perspective. "I Don't Like Mondays" and "Enjoy the Silence" stand out to me.
went with that. Not really my thing though.
357. Panic Prevention – Jamie T (kupcho1 ranked #2) (also received 5 points from Nick V)
I "outrank" @Nick Vermeil on this one, so I'll select:

I love the lyrics, but especially the spoke word
Good heavens, you boys!
Blue blooded murder of the English tongue
Bluh!
not the biggest hip hop fan but I enjoyed it.
543. The Royal Scam – Steely Dan (Zamboni ranked #14)
Steely Dan is pretty polarizing around here - some love them and some hate them. I'm obviously in the former camp and this album is the one that has always resonated with me most.

For a song selection, going with the opening track "Kid Charlemagne" with killer guitar work by the legendary Larry Carlton.

really liked the solo(s) but overall I can't say I'm a huge fan of the song. Also my youtube is on auto play and Do It Again came on after and I like that better, so does Mrs. Punt
381. The Sky is Crying – Stevie Ray Vaughn (Psychopav ranked #2)
)
Well it didn't take long for me to be surprised. With so many unique albums on my list I guess I shouldn't be.

For anyone who hasn't heard it, SRV's version of Little Wing is a phenomenal track.
It grows on you, or at least it did on me. Really didn't care for it at first but after 2 minutes I think it picks up. Very relaxing.
447. Curtis – Curtis Mayfield (Don Quixote ranked #8)

I am surprised that I am the only vote for Curtis, but maybe another of Curtis Mayfield’s albums will show up on this list. The Middle-Aged Dummies here probably could have figured that he’d show up high for me (here’s my MAD playlist of my 31 favorite Mayfield songs, ordered 31-1).

Curtis was his first solo album after he left The Impressions. After all of his message songs with The Impressions, this album represented more of his anger about the failures of the civil rights movement, and moved away from some of the soul/R&B sounds of The Impressions to more of a funk sound. Lots of great songs on this album.

I had “(Don’t Worry) If There’s a Hell Below, We’re All Going to Go” (Spotify) #1 in my MAD playlist, and it is still my favorite with the grittier lyrics.

But @KarmaPolice , for the playlist here, I’ll go a bit more uplifting with the chalkier pick of “Move on Up” (Spotify). (ETA: Just added myself.)
I liked the drum solo outro but that's about all.
428. De Stijil – The White Stripes (Dan Lambskin ranked #7)
Nobody else likes The White Stripes or just overlooking their best album?
I like them or at least their big hits like 7 Nation Army and Hardest Button to Button (also love the video) but as will be a constant from me, I haven't listed to many full albums.
@KarmaPolice add Down by the River for my Live at Massey Hall. Much obliged.
really like the guitar solo that starts @ 2 mins but that's pretty much all.
428. The Ghosts That Haunt Me – Crash Test Dummies (Barry2 ranked #7)
On this album you'll here guitars, piano, mandolin, banjo, accordion, cello, violin. Biggest single was Superman's Song. It has a really good cover of The Replacements track Androgynous.

Comin Back Soon (The Bereft Man's Song)

Mornings we have toast and tea
I gaze across the table, she glares right back at me
And when we're getting low on jam
I give her the last spoonful, that's just the way I am
And I drive her to work each day
Even though it's early and work is far away
And I don't even say a thing
When she plays the radio so loud you cannot think
what is this? can't say I liked this at all.
@KarmaPolice Can you please add Shadowboxer from Tidal? Thank you sir.
didn't really care for it, Criminal is better I think.
Please add Oh Yeah from Tago Mago. Thanks.

it grows on you but I didn't feel like it was all that good.
I guess my selection will be "Soul of the Sea".
sorry. please don't hate me

Life Less Ordinary by Carbon Leaf
Little Wing by Stevie Ray Vaugn
Shelia by Jamie T
Down by the River by Neil Young
Oh Yeah by Can
Move on Up by Curtis Mayfield
Kid Charlemagne by Steely Dan
Shadowboxer by Fiona Apple
Soul of the Sea by Heart
Coming Back Soon by The Crash Test Dummies
Enjoy the Silence by Tori Amos
Trip’s Rating:

I added "Watch me Bleed" to the playlist for my #5 pick, The Hurting by Tears for Fears. I was a depressed teen and I probably listened to this album (cassette) every night for at least a year. I still love the songs (exception, "the prisoner" which has to be skipped). Some of my favorite emo songs ever, especially The Start of the Breakdown. I know they're known for poppy 80s hits, but Curt was an outstanding bass player and Roland was a great songwriter.

347 (tie). Jesus Christ Superstar (The Concept Album) - Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice (76 points)
347 (tie). Breakfast in America – Supertramp (76 points)

Never knowingly listened to The Hoople, Bad Brains or Supertramp.

Not familiar with the first two, but on Supertramp, you never listened to Goodbye Stranger, Take the Long Way Home, or the Logical Song?

Yeah its a great soundtrack for teenage/early 20s depression.
Ive cried many a tear over the whole album, but Memories Fade in particular.
I ranked that song #2 in my Tears for Fears rundown for the MAD countdown

I included 7 songs from the Hurting, plus the B Side to Suffer the Children, Wino
Their rankings
1 - Mad World
2 - Memories Fade
8 - Pale Shelter
11 - Suffer the Children
21 - Wino
22 - Ideas as Opiates
23 - The Hurting
29 - Change

I wanted to include Watch Me Bleed and Start of the Breakdown, but had to include work from the all bodies of their material including Covers of Creep and My Girls, plus two versions of Everybody Wants to Run/Rule the World.
If I had included Watch Me Bleed and Start of the Breakdown, I would have included The Prisoner for completions sake.

347 (tie). Jesus Christ Superstar - Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice (76 points)

@Psychopav #41
@timschochet #42
@Mrs. Rannous #54

Jesus Christ Superstar is a 1970 album musical written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, and the debut of the rock opera of the same name.

The album's story is based in large part on the Bible and Fulton J. Sheen's Life of Christ. Rice said, "I used the King James and Catholic versions — whichever was handier — interchangeably.
ValRannous also has this on his list. It's one of his favorite albums.
He wanted a different version. He asked for a Special London edition and the others were Broadway or put under that if not identified.

This one I’m going to leave since we’re at end of rankings - if Val wanted this one or if someone else wanted the London one, we’ll just all assume it would be a little higher or would drop out. But on this one I’m not going back. No offense intended to any of the involved parties.
No he didn't. He asked for the concept album, which I also did. (That's why I sent you notes.) Since we've been doing this for so long, we're pretty sure that Tim also wants the concept album.

Sorry. I didn't want to put concept album in the title line because searching would be a nightmare.

Edit: I see Psychopav also wanted the concept album. No one really needs to hear Ted Neely. Mr R ruined that forever when he said, "The Tool is in the Garden." Every time I see that scene, I roll out.
Yep this is correct. The concert album features all the great vocalists, particularly Ian Gillan of Deep Purple as Jesus, Murray Head as Judas, and Mike D’Abo of Manfred Mann as Herod.

One of my favorite aspects of the blues rock era of the late 60s/early 70s is the stylizing of the British vocalists (think Robert Plant, Paul Rodgers, early Rod Stewart, etc.) and this album is emblematic, in fact Gillan in a couple of tunes really lets his voice go even beyond Deep Purple. That’s a big part of what makes this record great.

I cannot think of Tears for Fears without thinking of Psych! Mad World is great and all but the cover just knocks it out of the park. Not sure if that album would ever be here though.

As one of a few posters whose #2 album didn't make the cut, I guess I'll say something about it. Live at the Atlanta International Pop Festival: July 3 & 5, 1970 is my second favorite live recording ever. It was recorded just about 8 months before my favorite live recording. It's a little hard to discuss without saying too much about that other recording which will surely come later, but in this one you can just start to hear the Allman Brothers reaching their peak powers. Duane and Dickey, as always, play off each other magically, but this is also one of the earliest recordings in which you can appreciate what a force Butch, Jaimoe, and Berry are. The highlight of the album is an incredible "Mountain Jam" in which the band is joined by Johnny Winter for a high energy performance.

Sounds like The Sky is Crying had a lot of opportunities to make the list. It was also one that just missed the cut for me. "Life by the Drop" (written by the great Doyle Bramhall) is one of my favorite Stevie Ray songs.

Flood is a big oversight on my part. I just didn't think of it but it would definitely be worthy to be on the list. The greatest nerd rock album.

Purple may have been the album I listened to most as a teenager. Still like it, but my tastes have changed and it doesn't hold up quite as well for me (even compared to some other STP albums).

Never knowingly listened to The Hoople, Bad Brains or Supertramp.

Not familiar with the first two, but on Supertramp, you never listened to Goodbye Stranger, Take the Long Way Home, or the Logical Song?
I just listened to the Mott album for the first time ever. Mott the Hoople was just a radio band for me - so I only knew 3-4 songs by them.
Since I’m a big Bowie fan it’s odd I never gave Mott a shot.

Anyway the album started off great - really rocking glam rock - but seemed to drag a little for me on the second half.

420. I Robot – The Alan Parsons Project (BroncoFreak ranked #6)

I’ve been a longtime fan of AP and the APP. as well as what AP accomplished with Pink Floyd and The Beatles. He’s always been underrated by the masses, but not to me. His talent is immeasurable. Have met him several times as part of his fan club and it was always a thrill of a lifetime being in the presence of a genius. One of the most gracious people I have ever met.

This is one of their best albums of all time. Most songs are instant classics.

Genesis 1 Ch.32 has easily one of the best riffs of all time. So simple, yet so good.

I dare you to listen to Some Other Time and not get a tear in your eye for its sure beauty. There are actually two leads on that single. Try to pick them out. One make and one female.

Breakdown, I Wouldn’t Want To Be Like You, Don’t Let It Show, and Day After Day (The Show Must Go On) are all superb.

From Wiki:

The album was intended to be based on the I, Robot stories written by Asimov, and Eric Woolfson spoke with Asimov himself, who was enthusiastic about the idea. As the rights already had been granted to a TV/movie company, the album's title was altered slightly by removing the comma in "I," and the theme and lyrics were made to be more generically about robots rather than to be specific to the Asimov universe.

The cover inlay reads: "I Robot... The story of the rise of the machine and the decline of man, which paradoxically coincided with his discovery of the wheel... and a warning that his brief dominance of this planet will probably end, because man tried to create robot in his own image." The title of the final track, "Genesis Ch.1 v.32", follows this theme by implying a continuation to the story of Creation, since the first chapter of Genesis only has 31 verses.

According to the band's website, Paul McCartney unintentionally helped to inspire the song "Some Other Time". When Parsons had asked if McCartney could read a line of poetry for the band's first album in exchange for a favor Parsons had previously done him, McCartney replied by saying; "Some other time Alan, some other time". This gave the band an idea for a song title.

By pure coincidence, the album was released shortly after Star Wars came out in the United States. The group acknowledges that part of the album's success came from it being the only album with a robot on the cover during a time when robots were suddenly "all the rage".

Give it a shot, you will be glad you did.

It looks like there are 17 of you on to be able to add songs and there are now 35 songs on the playlist. I scanned through and got what I saw from the albums yesterday, so I think we are up to date with songs that people posted.

I saw 2 from the official albums starting at #353 get listed, but I didn't see the other 3 (mott, bad brains, beatles). Those are the 5 albums I added to start today as well, and I am already mad as I stare at JC Superstar on the list. ;)

I think the time I got most annoyed during the MAD was when someone was repeatedly complaining about being forced to listen to songs on the playlist that they did not like because they were out of Spotify skips.

I Wouldn’t Want To Be Like You
Although it's probably Parson's most generic song (in that I could see other artists doing this more than most of his stuff), it's my favorite from his catalog.

I could imagine pretty easily late '70s versions of The Kinks, Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Pat Benatar, Little River Band, The Cars, Sir Paul, and several others making this record. Hell, I see the Stones having this fit right in on Some Girls. That's meant as praise, not a knock.

They must have been out of bullets too.

Shoot the lock off the wallet!

There's Nothing Wrong with Love is the second studio album released by American indie rock band Built to Spill.
The album has been considered a concept album based around a general theme of growing up. Among the topics: "[Frontman Doug] Martsch sings about everything from the erotic thrill of touching a girl's thumb during an elementary-school game of seven-up to the hip appeal of David Bowie."

The Score is the second studio album by American hip hop group Fugees, released worldwide on February 13, 1996, by Columbia Records. The album features a wide range of samples and instrumentation, with many aspects of alternative hip-hop that would come to dominate the hip-hop music scene in the mid- to late-1990s.

I love, love, love this album which was my first exposure to Conor Oberst. The lyrics are great (not to mention the source of the album title). And, if I'm not mistaken, the music seems to be a riff on ... something.
🤔

I read the body count out of the paper
And now its written all over my face
No one ever plans to sleep out in the gutter
Sometimes that's just the most comfortable place
