Consensus Top 350 Albums of All-Time: 24. Appetite For Destruction – Guns N' Roses (310 Viewers)

Alright, now that I am getting crabby with the Mariners game.......
Why are you crabby? They're up 6-1 on the ChiSox. Woo another dominant performance. JRod is playing like 2nd half Julio. Geno's 1st HR since coming back. Young is now hitting. Other than the Dumper in a slump, nothing but good vibes.....and Raleigh will turn it around.

This is the most optimistic I've been about the M's in 20+ years. Let's hope they don't blow this opportunity.

*now 8-1 after a Naylor 2 run bomb.
It was "only" 1-1 when i left the room to post that, and i want them to be great so much that i get pissed at any bad call or it they don't dominate from inning 1.

Agree this is probably the best top to bottom lineup ive seen in forever. Like you said, Cal is in a slump but the bottom of the order is playing lights out the last couple weeks and the top is dominate. Very tough lineup to get through and i can't remember the last time i said that. Didn't know you were a fan...
I'm just like you. I was screaming at the TV tonight on a bad strike call and my wife said, "you know, it's only the 1st inning".

I'm a lifelong (suffering) Mariners' fan since 1977. I was born and raised in Seattle. Been to probably 70-80 games over the years---mostly in the King Dome. Still follow them closely every season since I moved away. I pay for the MLB.TV package every season hoping "this" will be the year. Like I said, this is the best I've felt about the team at this point in the season since probably 2003.

how much is mlb tv?
I think it was $150 this season on Xfinity.
About right, i thought it was 129/year, but i honestly don't look at my autorenew, it just goes through it could have gone up a bit. Still worth it as i lose sleep watching these late ganes. Too old for 11:30 bedtime.
I think it's $129 to see just a single team's games, $150 for all the games.

That’s a totally bizarre pricing. Who doesn’t cough up 21 bucks over 6 months? If you follow your team . . . it doesn’t make sense, really but people do this for a living so you’d think they find the proper point to entice but save. 21 bucks doesn’t seem like it. A Reese’s four-cup pack is $2.94 at Wal-Mart. Don’t ask, but one of those a month? Seems flinty.

Gotcha. I do get all the games besides the blackout of Brewers games, so must be the $150 now.

More swearing in the 9th but a win and a Buhner sighting in the booth ends the night with a big smile!

Best moment on the album...

Somebody spoke and I went into a dream Ahhhh, ahhhhhh, Ahhhhhhh, ahhhhhh, Ahhhhhh, Ahhhhhhhhhhh 😵‍💫

That's a great one. I'm also partial to "Rita!" followed by the jaunty piano bit, on "Lovely Rita."
girrllll, what da hell you doin' leavin' da album off your list? I actually originally didn't have it on my list, but then kept thinking about it, and had to add it. It was the one I was going back and forth on with Help!

My list had Help!, Let It Be, and three others that haven't shown up. Four of those were in my top 12! It felt egregious to have more.
Duuuuude! I had five Queen albums, and even I didn't do that.

(I also went desert island disk style.)

Hotel California is the fifth studio album by American rock band Eagles, released on December 8, 1976, by Asylum Records. Recorded by the band and produced by Bill Szymczyk at the Criteria and Record Plant studios between March and October 1976, it was the band's first album with guitarist Joe Walsh, who had replaced founding member Bernie Leadon, and the last to feature founding bassist Randy Meisner. The album cover features a photograph of the Beverly Hills Hotel, taken by David Alexander.
I know it's popular to bash the Iggles, but this is very fine album. Wasn't too far out of my top 70.
This one is going to be my next "porch" listen. I know I've listened at some point, but it's been a long time since I've tried and honest dedicated listen.
When listening pay extra attention to one of the tracks called Hotel something or another That one is especially good.
My favorite song off the album is "Wasted Time" - Henley sings his butt off here - but I don't really have a say for the selection on this album.

Not a huge Eagles fan, but this song is really powerful

36. Van Halen – Van Halen (489 points)

Widely regarded as one of the greatest debut albums in rock music
Yes.

Speaking of putting on a record and hearing guitar like it had never been played before.
I instantly had a new favorite guitarist and band. The other guitar rock of that time period sounded so tame in comparison. 🎸

Even though I wasn't an official ranker (118 on my extended list), I'll offer a suggestion on Sgt. Pepper. I'd recommend "Getting Better" because I like the way it captures the Paul/John dynamic. Plus it will be broadly appealing for such a diverse playlist and listeners.

Or you could just go with "She's Leaving Home" (just kidding, but this was maybe my favorite commentary in @krista4's thread).

Eddie deservedly gets most the accolades, but I really appreciate Michael Anthony's harmonies and pounding bass work every time I put on the old stuff.

The Bends is the second studio album by the English rock band Radiohead, released on 13 March 1995 by Parlophone. It was produced by John Leckie, with extra production by Radiohead, Nigel Godrich and Jim Warren. The Bends combines guitar songs and ballads, with more restrained arrangements and cryptic lyrics than Radiohead's debut album, Pablo Honey (1993).

Van Halen is the debut studio album by American rock band Van Halen, released on February 10, 1978, by Warner Bros. Records. Widely regarded as one of the greatest debut albums in rock music, the album was a major commercial success, peaking at number 19 on the Billboard Top LPs & Tape chart. It has sold more than 10 million copies in the United States, receiving a Diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and making it one of the best-selling albums in the country.
This was a bit of a legacy pick for me, as I rarely listen to it anymore, but VH is too much of a longtime favorite for me not to include their debut, which is obviously (to many) their best album.

At 27, The Bends was my 3rd highest ranked Radiohead record. What a massive leap from their debut. It's literally one beast of a song after another. Planet Telex, Fake Plastic Trees, Street Spirit, High and Dry, My Iron Lung...just an embarrassment amount of musical riches.

This is not Radiohead’s most brilliant or challenging record, but it’s their most listenable one, and the one I play most often. It was important to their career for showing that they could do more than have catchy hits played in heavy rotation on radio and MTV. There are big sounds and big emotions here, even though the lyrics are usually not straightforward.

My favorites are opener Planet Telex, closer Street Spirit (fade out), Just, and the title track.

I’m low on the list for the playlist selection but Fake Plastic Trees might be the most beautiful song of all time.

baby's got the bends and we was straight rubberneckin' it - anon

If you asked me favorite song off of this album it would change every time. I love it every so often. I loved it more back then.

Today it's "The Bends" that wins. That repeating solo/riff at 3:07 or so that rides out almost to the end until the last chorus is a chef's kiss from Greenwood (I never could remember how to spell his given name).

And then Modest Mouse's "Out Of Gas" comes on the algorithm and comparatively . . . oooooh. I kinda think el modesto's guitar rock is a little more up my alley. Radiohead had to go through The Bends to get back to their computer okay, have a baby, and forget all about it.

Yeah, this is stream of consciousness set to headphones, but The Bends is such a good album. I'm surprised it's here over Kid A (is it?), but what do I know?

Highway 61 Revisited is the sixth studio album by the American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on August 30, 1965, by Columbia Records. Dylan continued the musical approach of his previous album Bringing It All Back Home (1965), using rock musicians as his backing band on every track of the album in a further departure from his primarily acoustic folk sound, except for the closing track, the 11-minute ballad "Desolation Row". Critics have focused on the innovative way Dylan combined driving, blues-based music with the subtlety of poetry to create songs that captured the political and cultural climate of contemporary America. Author Michael Gray argued that, in an important sense, the 1960s "started" with this album.

I missed this. This is my favorite Dylan and is just unbelievable. This is political? Holy hell, I just thought he was mad at Edie Sedgwick—not the world. I thought he was over that global slap rapping by this point. Nah, I dig it. But this album has the most thinly-veiled politics of his early stuff, no? I love this record. "Tombstone Blues" is probably my favorite at this stage in my life but "Desolation Row" used to be my sort of brooding late night thing. I've moved on and the rest of the album is awesome and I have memories of that song.

Of course I'll pick the most punk song out of the bunch. And the one with the politics (that I didn't know about until, like, recently), which are pretty oblique.

"The fast-paced, two-chord blues song . . . [with the] 'king of the Philistines' who sends his slaves 'out to the jungle' as a reference to President Lyndon B. Johnson" - Wikipedia

Well then. I always just liked the blues part of it with the windows down. This whole album is kind of that way for me.

Thriller is the sixth studio album by the American singer and songwriter Michael Jackson, released on November 29, 1982, by Epic Records. It was produced by Quincy Jones, who previously worked with Jackson on his album Off the Wall (1979). With the ongoing backlash against disco music at the time, he moved in a new musical direction, resulting in a mix of pop, post-disco, rock, funk, synth-pop, and R&B sounds, and darker themes; Jackson wanted to create an album where "every song was a killer". Paul McCartney appears as the first credited featured artist on a Jackson album. Recording took place from April to November 1982 at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles, California, with a budget of $750,000.

Back in Black is the seventh studio album by Australian rock band AC/DC, released on 25 July 1980, by Albert Productions and Atlantic Records. It was the band's first album to feature Brian Johnson as lead singer, following the death of their previous vocalist Bon Scott. After the commercial breakthrough of their 1979 album Highway to Hell, AC/DC was planning to record a follow-up, but in February 1980, Scott died from alcohol poisoning after a drinking binge. The remaining members of the group considered disbanding, but ultimately chose to continue on and recruited Johnson, who had previously been the vocalist for Geordie.

I think over-exposure kept this one off my list but it's one of the best party albums of all time and has great song after great song.

With MJ now selected, I wonder if all the remaining albums are from artists that have already appeared on the countdown.

An additional guess is we have only three albums left made after 1990.

Same here - it’s a monster. Also probably fell off my list because I’ve come to loathe Brian Johnson’s voice over the years. I miss Bon.

Iconic as they come - thought it would rank a bit higher though.

For all its great tunes/production and accolades, to this day I associate it with wonder joints as much as anything.

Oh boy. The Bends. Listening now, and i will collect my thoughts and post a ramble tonight. Some of the proof of the greatness of the album for me is i haven't even seen 3 of personal 4 favorites from the album mentioned yet - the run at the end if the album: Bulletproof, Black Star (my favorite), Sulk, Street Spirit. I will let an actual Brit have final choice of the playlist song, so my fellow #2 can choose.

I will take the title song of Thiller.

I don't think so. There is at least one artist I think will show up that hasn't yet.
Yeah, i think we might see a debut from an artist i don't think has been listed yet.
There is no 'think' about it, only question is when.
I feel like there is more than one, although I may be zoning out here a bit. There is a debut from 1976 that I feel is a lock to still come.
