Who was writing such lyrics in 1965? Not Bob Dylan, the supposed king of realism at the time. Even the roughest lyrics by blues giants like Muddy Waters didn’t touch heroin. Reed was in a class by himself.

I know and love Punchbowl. I was thinking more about Primus, Antipop, and whatnot last night after our brief back and forth. What I came up with is that Tim was as much, if not more, my connection with the band when I first started listening to them as Les. Insane drumming, and my interest in them fell off after he left the band, so Punchbowl was the last album that I remember really liking. There are some random good songs on Brown album and past that, but at least for me they lost part of the magic. Yet another playlist I have been working on is a Tim playlist, which got me listening to Primus' Desaturating Seven and got me listening to a little Puscifer, which I had also written off for whatever reason.

How did you like Moonlapse Vertigo? I gave Still Life a hefty 45 here for the countdown, and it's my 3rd favorite Opeth album. Being their other concept album boosts it for me, but it's also a fantastic example of how they can go from really heavy songs to ones that display the beauty in their music. My 2 favorites on the album are White Cluster, which has one of my favorite solos in their music, and Serenity Painted Death. As for a tune I consider one of their "beautiful" songs that even some non-metal fans would like, Benighted was the 3rd from the album I has planned to feature on my MAD31 before I chickened out. Love the guitar on this one too. Great album top to bottom and another meant to be played start to finish.

I saw they were playing in Columbus, and my son is a huge SW nerd and metal fan, so I thought this would be cool to go to. Might still be, just seems it would be cooler if they were wearing, like, you know, actual Star Wars costumes.

Ill admit im not musically inclined enough to isolate instruments I get much more drawn into vocals but there’s some I can focus in on. Primus is Les and Ler to me and whatever drummer is fine. Seems like they’re reinvigorated under the new guy (hoffer?)

Anyway antipop was definitely an attempt to change course and put a strain on the band but this album was all over radio and Best Buy end caps so I bought it and played it a lot . Lots of guest producers (tom

Electric Uncle Sam is fine, good anti government song for the digital age

As far as Puscifer I think they were a bit shticky at first but have evolved into really good experimental band. Carina round is amazing. Kinda taking on a more synth feel lately

They just release In Case You Were Napping which is a greatest hits

Try something from Damnation to attempt to soften her stance. Pretty sure my wife added a couple from there after we saw them, and my daughter likes a couple off Pale Communion.

What does it mean to be a fan of a musical artist? I liked a couple of Tom Perry’s songs, but I had no desire to buy a whole album or go see him in concert. So I guess you’d say I wasn’t a fan. Full Moon Fever came out when I was in college, so maybe I wasn’t growing, my horizons expanding, who knows. The first song I heard was I Won’t Back Down. I liked it. Maybe because George was on it, but I liked it. Then the next song was Free Fallin. Boom. I was thunderstruck. I thought, what a great f ing song. I went and bought the CD. And I loved it. It’s been one of my favorites for 35 years. So, am I a Tom Petty fan? This is where it started

Catching up once again and see I’m the high ranker on two recent listings - Van Morrison, Moondance and VU and Nico. I came to both of these much later than others most likely.

Aside from the song Moondance, I hadn’t really listened to much Van Morrison until I started collecting albums again about 12 years or so ago. Bought Moondance and didn’t look back on my newfound Van Morrison love. This album starts out with some of my now all time favorites, It Stoned Me, Moondance, Crazy Love, Caravan and Into the Mstic. As others have recommended, I’m going to have to go with Into the Mystic for the playlist, as it has become a song that Mrs. Punk and I will dance to whenever it is on and wherever we may be.

Quick aside, about five years ago we went to a New Years Eve party with about a dozen friends and there was karaoke (there always seems to be karaoke with this group of friends). I was on a particular kick with this album and I did all five of the above listed songs in order when I went up and sang throughout the night . I’m not the greatest singer but that night I was on fire and I’m pretty sure Van got a few new fans who hadn’t heard some of these songs (aside from Moondance) before.

I’m listening to Velvet Underground and Nico again this morning to try and pick a song for the playlist … ugh, one great song after another but all very different from each other. One of the most diverse albums in my collection. I really didn’t know much about VU but loved the album cover, so I bought it. Blew my mind, as it is just not like anything I ever listened to before. I’m not sure why, but whenever I listen to it, it makes me feel like I’m in the Peter Sellers movie, The Party and I’m just waiting for the painted elephant to come in with a gang of hipsters and jump in the pool.

So many choices. I love the mellow start with Sunday Morning and then it just gets better from there. Femme Fatale and I’ll be Your Mirror and two Nico songs that I really love, but I’m going to have to go with a Lou Reed led song. Three way tie of I’m Waiting for the Man, There She Goes Again, and Run, Run, Run will be broken by @timschochet and @rockaction who obviously both revere this album as much as I do, so I’m Waiting for the Man will be the choice for the playlist.

Incredible run of albums the last couple of days!

I think MTV overplaying the daylights out of Free Fallin' and I Won't Back Down ruined both for me for forever. I hope to never hear either ever again.

I do still love Runnin' Down a Dream, however, and A Face in the Crowd is stellar.

I got a little grandiose yesterday writing about it because I've been trying to write effectively these days, and I keep editing my stuff incessantly, but I meant everything I said about that album in its current form (I axed some of the more flowery language and abstractness last night, and I also corrected some of the factual and abstractly philosophical claims because I'm trying to be clear, accurate, and interesting here). I see you at least read the suggestions, and I thank you for that. If you made it through the whole thing then God bless, man.

I came to the album and group late like you (I was 26 or so) and I can still remember back in my drinking days hanging with a friend who probably had never heard of them. We were listening to music and had been all night, so I put the album in the CD changer (remember those?) on a really hungover Sunday morning while we were situated outside in the gray Virginia misting rain. And then through that mist a beautiful sort of song ("Sunday Morning") comes on at about 7 A.M., and we're just sitting there after being up all night. He's interested in what's on and one of the girls we know has wandered in and apparently knows them and simply says, "good choice, S__," S__ being my nickname that is too embarrassing to even type out around mature folk like you all. And then "I'm Waiting for the Man" comes on and it's kind of a universal agreement that the song right then means, "beer and conviviality renewed a little bit past 7 A.M.," and we start talking with a little more volume and we're up again; the mist burning away into a warm morning where the sun is about to be a little too bright and a little too hot for my taste.

I guess I needed Lou's sunglasses (the pictures of him in those glasses during that period—the ones everybody tries to imitate because they're almost wrap-around cool—are his mother's old cataract glasses because he's really sensitive to the sun, which is likely due to things that will remain unsaid). I could have used a pair of those then, and I'm looking at the clock and it's a little past 7 A.M. again on the West Coast, only this time I'm doing fine.

For me it's Don't Come Around Here No More. Hated that video for some reason. Been jamming Full Moon Fever and Damn the Torpedoes this morning and really digging both. I've never really listened to many full Petty albums.

I like Full Moon Fever a lot. I like 4-5 Petty albums better, but I love all of his albums.

The hits did get overplayed by MTV and radio which does “ruin” any song, but they’re still good songs and I’m happy to see the Florida Gators adopt “I won’t Back Down” as a tribute to their Gainesville brother.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is the seventh studio album by English singer, pianist, and composer Elton John. A double album, it was released on 5 October 1973, by DJM Records. Recorded at the Château d'Hérouville in France, the album became a double LP once John and his band became inspired by the locale. Among the 17 tracks, the album contains the hits "Candle in the Wind", US number-one single "Bennie and the Jets", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", and "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting", along with the live favorites "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" and "All the Girls Love Alice".

So I mentioned before that Band on the Run and one other album were probably my most played of all time. It was Goodbye YellowBrick Road. My dad had all the early Elton albums up until Rock of the Westies. I would play the album back to front. I would start with different sides once in a while. Unbeknownst to me one of the minor songs had a minor scratch on it and skipped a couple of words that I didn’t know were there until I got the CD. Lots of the songs had “risqué “ material that went over my 5 year old head and wouldn’t be PC to play today, but, whatever, I love it

Full Moon Fever is the debut solo studio album by American musician Tom Petty, released on April 24, 1989, by MCA Records. It features contributions from members of his band the Heartbreakers, notably Mike Campbell, as well as Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison (who died prior to its release), and George Harrison, Petty's bandmates in the Traveling Wilburys. I think MTV overplaying the daylights out of Free Fallin' and I Won't Back Down ruined both for me for forever. I hope to never hear either ever again.

I do still love Runnin' Down a Dream, however, and A Face in the Crowd is stellar.

For me it's Don't Come Around Here No More. Hated that video for some reason. Been jamming Full Moon Fever and Damn the Torpedoes this morning and really digging both. I've never really listened to many full Petty albums.

I would probably pick "A Mind With A Heart Of It's Own". Don't know why, but I really like this one. My middle name is Earl.

I have 2 70s and 2 90s ones written down (3 are of the 12 I mentioned above I am comfortable that are making it). The other one I went a different way with my 2 albums from that band.

Loved both Damn the Torpedoes and Full Moon Fever (Full Moon slightly more). Petty is right in that wheelhouse of artists and albums I like when I sit down to listen to them, but would never have if not for threads like this or the MAD31 ones. A lot of hits, and I know and still love all those on the albums ( won't tire of tunes like Refugee and Runnin Down a Dream), but there were some rockers I hadn't heard before that I really dug like What Are You Doin' In My Life? and The Apartment Song. Good stuff.

I am staring at 4 of my MAD31s artists getting shut out as well as my Rd 6 artist, for example. Not that most are surprising at all for missing, but right there are 20+ albums I think are fantastic that I could recommend for people. When I look at my list, much is artists that have shown up, but I zagged to different albums, and I am guessing those won't be making an appearance - my 2 Journey albums, for example.
