1. First 21 weeks are played like a normal roto league, 5x5, 14 points for first, 13 for second, etc.
2. At the end of 21 weeks, the 3rd place through 6th place teams meet up and "roto" against each other for 2 weeks in the first round of playoffs.
3. At the end of the first round, the top two finishers out of the four advance and face 1st and 2nd in the final round of the playoffs. Highest score for the final two-week period is the winner, obviously. We currently have a standard 6 team playoff, btw.
4. Optionally, we could also add points in the playoffs for finishing higher. So in the first round, 3rd place would start with 3 extra points, 4th would start with 2 extra points, etc. In the final round, first would start with 3 points and second would start with 2 extra points.
Advantages:
1) Increases the likelihood of the regular season champion converting a championship in the playoffs. FTR, the #1 seed in our league is 0-4 in four years, and the higher seed is an unremarkable 9-11 against the lower seed in all playoff matchups, which speaks to the parity of the H2H playoff system.
2) Strips away the layer of luck in H2H leagues, where a large part of how well you fare in a given year depends on who you face in a given week, how easy your schedule is, etc. Anyone who has a league on Sportsline and has perused the "Breakdown" rankings (where you would be in the standings if you played every team every week) knows what I'm talking about. Currently, the 4th and 5th best teams in our league would not make the playoffs, while the 8th and 9th best teams would.
3) Avoids the tedium of roto leagues where nobody except for 1-3 teams really has a shot at winning after half the season is over.
Disadvantages:
1) Configurability on Sportsline
