Contact Lens and/or Glasses - Need Advice (2 Viewers)

@Mad Cow  My eyes are getting worser :(

54 y/o... I had RK back in 1997.  Currently using some cheapo NVF lenses (need for reading and mid-range/computer)... but my distance vision is failing drastically in my right eye especially.  I would prefer to get back into contacts, but not sure that's possible.  Thoughts?

Honestly, post-Rx eyes are terrible for contact lenses.  The curve is all messed up and you just cannot put a lens on those cuts reliably.  Sorry, I would avoid even if the doc said to try it.

So you could do monovision, but at 61, it would have to be a big disparity between your eyes to give you much.  I would probably try for like a +1.50 and see if that does most things, and then plan on wearing readers.

I finally got around to getting fit for multifocal contacts. Doc recommended some B&L contact lenses, maybe PureVision (or I may be confusing myself after looking at too many brands online).  Anyway, she recommended some drops as well. I've been wearing Night&Day for many years and she could tell that I don't take them out often enough. :bag:  I've had to use reading glasses the last few years, which is what I'm hoping to eliminate with multifocals.

The one set I tried at her office seemed pretty good. I could read all but the tiniest print. She sent me out with 2 sets to try and I'll have a follow-up visit in two weeks. We'll see how it goes but I'm thinking this might work. Pretty stoked and fingers crossed.

@Mad Cow Any hints on what to expect or any problems to be on the lookout for while I'm evaluating these multifocal contacts for the next few weeks?

got glasses for the first time ever last October.

looking to get a second pair but want more options than the local Lenscrafters. where are people buying glasses? if i buy them online how do they get the right.. Rx ( is that what it's called?) in them so i get the right lenses?

I have bought probably 8 to 10 pairs of glasses over the years from FramesDirect.com, including prescription sunglasses.  Haven't had any problems with them yet.  You need to get your prescription from your ophthalmologist or optometrist.  Enter the data into the screen they give you, then scan the prescription and email it in to them.  Or fax it in.  I wear progressive lenses.  I can get lightweight titanium frames with 1.67 index lenses and Transitions tinting for about $500.  The time before last, I went to my local optician for a change.  Their total charge was between $1,000 and $1,100 for the same thing.

I got multifocal lenses a couple years ago, and the improvement in vision was tremendous. Mine are Air Optix.  I didn't encounter any problems. Only downside is they're twice as expensive as regular lenses. Obviously worth it as can't really put a price on better vision.  I tend to cheat and wear them longer.

I've ordered from Madson of America and have been pleased with both Rx and Non Rx glasses.

I'm in multi-focal contacts for about a month now.  First time I've tried them.  Definitely an adjustment period.  Things are getting better, but not nearly as "clear" as my multi-focal glasses.  Computer and phone usage are the worst.  Hoping it gets better, but doc said not to expect it to be as good as glasses.  Trade off for convenience I guess.

Today is my first day actually wearing the multifocal contacts, coming from using distance contacts which required me to use readers frequently (computer, phone, etc.). I haven't worn glasses for many years but, yeah, I can tell my distance vision isn't perfect like it was with the old contacts. It's decent, but I noticed on the drive to work that I can't read street signs from as far away and details like tree branches are kinda lost in blur. I'm don't know if I might reasonably expect those issues to go away as my eyes might adjust to the new contacts, or maybe that's just the price of getting rid of reading glasses. We'll see. 👓

You will never get vision with contacts that are same as or better than with glasses. I have multi-focal contacts and constantly work with my optometrist to fine tune the contacts prescription.  If you are new to the muti-focals, give it two or three weeks.
