Contemplating job offer in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (1 Viewer)

I'd do it in a heartbeat. Matter of fact, @Christo, if you can get any other info about nursing pay over there from your friend, I'd like to know.
Not sure if I ever thanked you for all those Everquest (or whatever that game was) referral credit I got, but it was a whole hell of a lot so thank you

Sounds like a great opportunity. Maybe a dumb question because no one else has asked it but is it safe over there for westerners? I'd be concerned about things like kidnapping, etc. I'm probably just being a dumb stereotyping Mericun.

I would certainly not be among the rich. While a doubling or tripling of my salary is awesome for me, keep in mind that I am an artist and don't make too much to begin with :)

I would be working for a University over there, so not really a company per se.
Would you be needing any nude male models? I can be that for you.

I was there a couple months so I'm far from an expert compared to many others here, but I never felt in the slightest bit of danger. Very westernized. Loads of expats there (more British than American but still). It's definitely different and more conservative than much of America but they have most of the same fast food places you see here. I found a few Americans who lived outs Dubai that would actually visit Dubai so they could have a taste of home. Heck, their mall has a snow ski resort in it.

Yes it is safe. And yes to the other thing too :P

Salary would be 2-3 times what I am currently making. On top of salary, housing, insurance, relocation expenses, flights back to the states a few times a year, and some other perks included. My wife would also get placed in a job that pays her nearly double her salary.

It is a two year commitment. Would be enough money to return to the states and be able to pay off mortgage and probably take a year off to contemplate our next move.

My initial thought was no ####### way would I want to live in Dubai, or Abu Dhabi. But maybe? Dunno.

Anyone done anything like this? Would this interest any of you? Who has thoughts on living in UAE?
For a two year stint that would propel you to economic security and expose you to new cultures and perhaps additional biz opportunities / an improved project list?

#### yeah!

as long as there is no legislation against Moops Nap that is.

  • And an underwater zoo (aquarium).   :fishy:

Make sure you ask what the work week/hours look like. I have a buddy working in Saudi for 2 years. He's making a ton of money and enjoying the experience, but he works long hours and gets like 1 day off every 2 weeks (plus the longer time off every 6 months).

I think it sounds like a great opportunity, but make sure you know exactly what it entails before committing.

So if you and your wife are both working in Dubai who is watching the kids?   For that reason there is no way I would do it.

My sister and I were 2 and 6 when we moved to London. My friend moved his kid to Dubai when she was 4 or 5.

secondhand advice here but the couple people i know who have been there said they felt less like people and more like objects

less than second class citizens and more just like utilities

take that for what it's worth

So the 4-year old would be in all-day preschool for 5 days/week?   Most preschools around us are 1/2 day a couple times of week.
Elsewhere that is normal. My kids were in preschool for 10 to 12 hours a day when I lived in Brazil. When in Rome...

First, good stuff on getting an offer like that.

Would also recommend going for it, and the only debate is regarding the kids.

The reward for sticking it out there for 24 months (times 30 days = 720 days) is hard to pass up.

just make sure your housing allotment is superhigh - rents are on a par w Manhattan

and i bet if you send the kids to madrassas, they'll watch em all day....

Wouldn't it be easier and more accurate to say 365 days x 2 = 730 days?

I'd move to Detroit for 3 x's the pay!
Uh..... let's not get carried away. One is moving to one of the most unstable, violent and dangerous places in the world and the other is moving to Dubai.

I have a friend who basically prints his own money, has a wife way hotter than he deserves, because he can speak Arabic. It would be a great opportunity for your kids to learn that language. It could open up their futures in remarkable ways. I would go. Good luck!
Sorry to break it to you but I think your friend is a criminal.

My wife's cousin is there (husband is a doctor).  They are Croatian, so it's a little different, but they just did 2 years and decided to re-up.  He had trouble finding a position back in Croatia where they wanted to live after his 2-year stint was up, so they are going back for more.  I don't know how specialized your position is, but your wife might have problems finding something when you come back.  Just something to keep in mind.

I wonder how it compares to Singapore in that respect.

I have lots of friends who have lived in Singapore. As long as you don't break any rules, it is supposed to be great.
Singapore's also a tad more western, has great food, and is close to a ton of other interesting places for weekend trips.  Dubai really has none of that.

I wasn't implying they were identical.

And depending on how much travel you are willing to do for a "weekend" trip, there are actually lots of pretty interesting places within range of a short- to moderate-length direct flight.

Who cares about finding a job in the staes. Their house would be paid off. They could both be Wal-Mart greeters.

I'm kidding, sort of

it's been 12 years since we were there and it was part of our honeymoon, so not typical day-to-day eats- but I remember the food being quite good. and a surprisingly wide range available. but yeah- expensive.

I have heard differently.  I had a co-worker who spent 5 years in Dubai growing up and they went to Italy, Greece, and Egypt as school trips.  They were so much closer to everything.  The company provided money for golf and beach clubs, American schools, basically everything but food and travel.

Yea, this is where I am at. Wife wants to leave her current job anyway. I wouldn't have too much difficulty finding another gig when we come back.

It depends on the size of the salaries. Isn't the moops an artist?

Doubling vs tripling is a big difference, and even moreso if the current salaries aren't high. Of course you still presumably save on expenses too so that's huge.

this seem like a great opportunity for an adventure.  Save your money while you are there and give your kids an experience of a life time.  Look at it like a 3-5 year cultural experience that happens to pay for itself.  IMO this is a 100% yes.

I've been to Singapore a couple times for a few weeks on work.  I enjoyed the heck out of it but I never lived there.

I am an artist. Part time. Work 30 hours a week at a Univ designing/building/teaching 3D fabrication stuff. When I find time, I design and build bus stops, public pavilions, parklets, and do other assorted weird art ####.

I do alright for myself, but yes, depending on the actual offer, would be at least double a typical year for me (I have an OK salary from the U and my public art stuff varies in yearly income from 20K - 40K depending on year).

Wife keeps going back and forth as to whether she wants to do this. I am doing the same. Got many of my questions answered this morning. Won't have an official offer for at least a week though, probably more. Weird thing is I am one of two finalists for a different job here at the U, and find out at the end of the week if I will be offered that gig.

Most likely scenario is all this #### falls through and moops stays doing the same old stuff :kicksrock:

i will give you the same advice that i would give anyone in your shoes the numero uno thing you need to do is make sure that you are not accidentally going to work for hydra becauase yeah the salary is great and all that but it all gets real pretty quick when thor and that starlord guy are kicking your rear end from here to the other side of the universe all set to the sweet soundtrack of brandy your a fine girl by looking glass take that to the bank bromigos

I also think it's a tremendous opportunity.

I would ask for more "stuff" after you receive the full offer. More detail and close loopholes such as others mentioned like specific value of housing allowance, schooling allowance, etc. vs. general wording.

I have a friend from college that's teaching in Dubai now. She has a corporate apartment in a high-rise and seems to enjoy being out there with a few teacher ex-pats.
I imagine it'd be rough on the kids though.

Oh absolutely.

And check rental sites/schools for current prices. It sucks living in a dump for two years because the allowance sounded like a lot but wasn't
