Contract league - rookie vs veteran (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
16-team contract league, with separate rookie and veteran drafts.  Non-PPR, start QB, 1-2 RB, 2-5 WR, 0-2 TE.  Keep 7 veterans on contracts up to 4 years, plus rookies. Rookies get 2 years before needing one of those 7 contracts.

My RB/WR keepers are probably: J Howard, T Montgomery, T Rawls at RB and OBJ, Edelman, Tyreek Hill, D Parker, J Doctson at WR

I have 1.01 in the rookie and 1.02 in the veteran, and another guy has 1.02 and 1.01.  Top 2 veterans (barring a bizarre cut decision) are likely to be Julio and AJG; top RB is Lamar Miller.

Current expectation is that I'd take Fournette or whatever rookie RB stands out, and then most likely AJG (assuming he takes Julio), but I'm kicking around offering a swap of those picks, so I'd take whoever of Fournette/Mixon/McCaffery is left at #2, but be assured of landing Julio.

The draft isn't until August, and if one of the rookies looks like (insert color) Jesus during preseason, I'd likely keep the pick, but is Julio enough >> AJG to justify making the deal if the rookie RBs look close to me?  FBG dynasty rankings has them at 4 and 5, but with a noticeable gap between Evans/Brown/JJ at 2-3-4 and AJG/Cooper at 5-6, so I'm leaning toward pursuing the deal.

Im a big AJG fan, but do think Julio is worth more this year.

On the other hand, Fournette is shaking out as the only rook RB with a safe and obvious fulltime starting gig, so the gap over McCaffery or Mixon, especially in non-ppr is significant.  I think I'd rather have Fournette and the second WR, personally.

Are you going to be able to keep Julio or Green for many years once you select them?  Because if so, relative age becomes a factor.

As an aside, you listed 8 players for your 7 keepers.

I don't think there is much of a difference either way so I would go with the direction to get the players you like most. Personally, I would go to get Julio because I would be fine with any of the RB's.

Howard and Doctson I can keep outside the normal 7 since they were rookies last year, so I actually just listed 6 of the 7 keeper spots. I'm also keeping Mike Glennon :bag:  on a 1-year deal and Goff as a rookie.

Our veteran keeper contracts go 4-3-3-2-2-1-1, so if I don't cut someone early (or trade them) I have a 4 and a 3 to give each year.

So I could hypothetically keep Julio/Green for up to 4 years beyond 2017, but I'll also have to give contracts to Howard/Doctson/Goff as well if I decide to keep them.  So I'm going to have some cut/trade decisions to make if those guys all pan out.   Howard seems like a no-brainer; Doctson and Goff, hard to say based on 2016.

 Appreciate the responses/discussion
