So i had a couple of roof tiles that needed fixing. I called 3 places to get prices. Minimal job, just reattaching 3-4 tiles and checking things over. First two places said $350-$450 minimum for any job. Third place said they don't have minimums.

Had them come out to give an estimate. Said $350 minimum because they do have minimums. Also told me honestly i could have a handyman do it for probably $150. Decided to go ahead and have the roofing company do it instead of trying to figure out where to find a handyman and all that would go with that.

Service guy comes out today and says if I go through the company it will be $400. If i go through him and don't get him fired $200. I was on the spot and said OK i'll pay him. It was probably 25 minute job or so. He followed me to ATM afterward for payment. Never did see/sign any paperwork on the deal. He said he'd tell the office manager he came out and i had already had someone else do the work. Happy to pay less (still alot for the amount of work involved IMO) but don't like the funny feeling that came along with it.

What would you have done?

Cash deal for sure.

Also, going forward you should try to find a handyman you like. Most are people who have been doing this kind of stuff forever or are carpenters, plumbers etc. that either are retired or just doing this as a side job. A lot of handyman guys are more qualified than the people a lot of companies employ.

Any self-respecting, semiprofessional tradesman would NEVER have followed you to ATM for payment...Trust me, the profession is rife with scammers, he'll probably get more work out of you on this roof...be it by his recommendation or purposely faulty work he knows you won't bother to check, because its on a roof. You should NEVER have a funny feeling when giving someone work...your gut is invariably right. Caveat Emptor.

I would never do business with a person like that. Tax evader? Check. Uninsured? Check. Willing to steel money out of his employer's pocket? Check. But because you are so special, he's willing to give you this great deal... just don't tell anyone.

You are basically dealing with a crook.

Yeah but I save a hundred bucks!!!!!!

For #### I don't know how to do we call my dad or a handyman. Handyman is almost always the first call unless it is washer/dryer who we have people we have used a couple of times and are reasonable.

I think the company charging $400 and paying their worker less than $20 is a bigger crime. That said, it is not smart to hire someone for a roof job who is uninsured.

Well, it certainly takes away any possibility of that work being under any sort of warranty.

It's your roof. Saving 100-200 for a shady deal to fix the thing that protects your house is..............not smart. Just pay the company 400 and have them do $400 worth of tiling.

Hey, maybe he did great work, but does this sound like the sort of person who does great word? 25 minutes to fix a roof?

Its probably better work than if he paid the $400 and the worker only got $20 or $50 or whatever.ETA-assuming the workers offer was made.

I guess we will find out during winter if we see a "so my roof is leaking again" thread.
