Contracts (1 Viewer)

My league went to a contract league last year. We give 2 three year contracts each year. The problem is Tiki Barber was awarded a three year contract last year. Mid year he says he's going to retire. Now there's two years left on his contract, what do I do?

Give this team an additional two year contract to sign some one else?

Sorry, your stuck with Barber for the remaining two years?

Something else?

This is really impossible to answer without seeing your league's written rules on this issue (assuming its rules are in writing).

This should've been ironed out before switching to a contract league. Get it in writing ASAP, making provisions for things like retirements, IR, suspensions, etc.

Our contract keeper has a rule that provides a degree of contract forgiveness in the event of official retirement or unexpected death...the contract is not completely erased but reduced by half (relevant in our case because we have a cap on the number of years that may be granted and expect owners to think carefully before contracting older players)...

But in general we always rely on the rulebook...if you don't have a rule, the contract remains...

Here are the rules in place for contracts;

The First Year

For the first season, each team is awarded two three-year contracts and two two-year contracts. A regular, serpentine draft is used to stock each team`s roster. Following the draft and prior to the beginning of the season, each owner awards their contracts to players on their team. The two-year contracts allow the owner to keep the player for the following season and the three-year contracts keep the player on the team for the next two seasons.

Trading

As many fantasy football owners know, finding a trading partner and working out a trade that benefits both owners can be a truly difficult task. In a contract league, contracts travel with the player, so if a contracted player is traded to another team the contract goes with him. This adds a new dimension to the league as teams who are not having a good season can trade non-contracted players to contending teams to start rebuilding for next season.

The Second Year

At the second season`s draft, all contracted players are considered keepers and are eliminated from the draft pool. Each owner is given an additional two three-year contracts that are given to newly drafted players. The draft is a serpentine draft and the draft order is determined by last season`s standings (i.e. the champion drafts last). If a team has gained or lost contracts due to trades, they stop or continue drafting until they reach the roster limit.

The Third Year and Beyond

After the second season, players who were given two-year contracts after the initial draft become free agents and return to the draft pool. The draft order is again in the opposite order of the previous season`s standings. Each owner is given another pair of three-year contracts each season that are given to newly drafted players. Every season a new group of previously contracted players return to the draft pool.

I would say that a 2 year contract should be given to another player on the that team. Are you the commish?

Maybe have a league vote, then put something in the rules covering retirements.

I might interpret "allow the owner" to mean that contracts are not guaranteed, but I don't see any other language that suggests the owners have an option the following season, so the rules are at least inconsistent.

Based on how the rules are written, Tiki's contract still counts, he is one of his owner's keepers and won't be available via draft. Owner must hope he un-retires. I don't see any language that can be construed otherwise.

Is there no part of the rules that deal with outright cutting a contract player for roster space?

As the Commish this rule has now been added

If a player retires or dies in the off season, the teams affected will have a choice of either keeping that player on their roster with the hopes that he will un-retire or be given a new contract to replace the years remaining on that contract. If a player was to retire, die or is put on IR during the season that player will remain under contract.

The way this is worded, if a player has three years remaining on his contract but dies during the first game of the season*, the owner is stuck with him for all three years. How about:At the beginning of the fantasy draft each year, owners may cut any players who have died or retired. If an owner chooses to cut a player, he must concurrently designate another player on his roster to play out the remainder of the dead or retired player's contract._____*Is that when "during the season" starts? Or does preseason count? It should be defined.

New player signed will not be under contract. If a player were to receive a season ending injury during the season, that player will remain on your roster under the current contract. _____*Is that when "during the season" starts?
