I don't get it.

He lived on a high floor and was too short to touch the button for his floor. But when he had an umbrella, he used that to push the button.

And we all you know you can't carry an umbrella (or a cane or some other device) around on sunny days.

He was very concerned with his appearance and thought it would make him look silly.
