Coolest Athlete All-Time? (3 Viewers)

SWAG

Great players kind of have it already just by being great....Russell Wilson comes to mind. He's a stud but doesn't have swag is just an awesome player.

Few can have it I guess simply because the amount of great players is very limited.

I have also drank almost an entire bottle of wine
What wine?

I guess we are defining cool as swagger?

I always held Barry Sanders as ubercool for not being a showboat/having swagger.

Handing the ball back to the ref without celebration of the TD after a one of a kind break-multiple-ankles type of run was the ultimate in showing everyone he's "been there, done that."
Barry is the ####. Most fun player on the field I watched.

I also heard him talk on the Dan Patrick show about being so excited to by a new Honda Accord

That's almost so anti-Swag that it become swag.

Eric was a bad mofo. Parker was my guy though. The motherducking Cobra.
Grew up watching the Big Red Machine - George Foster had Popeye-sized forearms.  Ironically, the man who stopped him from winning the triple crown in 1977 was a Pirate named.. Dave Parker.

I regret I can only give this post one emoji. I love this. Right in my wheelhouse.

I was maybe 3-5 years too young to really get the Big Red Machine but I was in attendance for one game in 1976 World Series, went to prolly 5-10 games a year in the late 70’s, early 80’s. Mid 80’s-early 90’s was my era.

Still, I just knew Foster was the #### from the BRM teams and Dave Concepcion. Rose too but the whole gambling thing is hard to get past for me.

Wasn’t quite aware of Parker on the Pirates but when he came to the Reds he was my dude and I saw his stats on his card and read about him and that Pirates team, the All-Star game throws, the off the field stuff.

Great memories.

Not to hijack, but just imagine facing this 1975 team - C Bench, 1B Perez, 2B Morgan, SS Concepcion, 3B Rose, LF Foster, CF Geronimo, RF Griffey

45 years later, and I don't even need first names for people to know who they all are.  Considered by many to be one of the best teams of all time, behind only the '27 Yankees.

How many of us did the Joe Morgan flap when batting in wiffleball? It was that or the Willie Stargell windup for me

And coached by a guy named Sparky. How cool is that?

I was going to post Barry Sanders for that very reason.   His swag was just being the best.

George Best
This is a sneaky good one.

Banging every chick alive, playing drunk and still being one of the best in the world.  This dude was crazy and many times not the good kind.  This is an all time great quote by Best:

"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds [women] and fast cars – the rest I just squandered".

My list for coolest in their sport, which have been very shortlived:

Joe DiMaggio

Namath

M J

Derek Sanderson

Palmer

Ali

Agassi

Karelin

About halfway through his career he came to TC one year & announced he bought a BMW. All the guys were whooping it up “dang bro finally shot the lock off that wallet eh?” Then they found out he bought a pre-owned. “Less of a hit on the depreciation.”

Dont know what he’s up to these days but while most athletes around Oakland County lived on private lakes or in gated communities full of McMansions, Sanders in the 90s had a plain Jane ranch house in Rochester Hills. It’s a nice enough middle class suburb, absolutely nothing wrong with it, his neighbors were moderately successful. Neighbor kids would come knock on his door to see if they could shoot baskets in his driveway. If he wasn’t busy he’d join then. Like, NBD, that’s Barry the bachelor down the street, he’s nice to everyone.

Baseball and hockey are seriously lacking in this area. The sports aren't built around this.

I don't know hockey well enough but baseball is seriously lacking in players who were great on the field and were swag-filled

Ricky Henderson? Reggie?
Jeter

The Jordan talk lately had me thinking. Is there any athlete ever any sport that matches Jordan's "swag" / cool factor?

Ali for sure. That's pretty much it.

Brady? Deion?

Struggling to even think of one in Baseball. The whole sport is kind of against showing swag. Reggie Jackson maybe?

I don't know Soccer well enough to sort the posers out. That Zoltan dude cracks me up and seems like he backs it up.
Not matching Jordan or the greats but for baseball I'm going with Ken Griffey Jr. When collecting cards as a kid his always just had that "cool" feel about them. Also Ichiro was (and is) super cool.
