Costco Love <3 (1 Viewer)

Costco has the best meat you can buy, unless you have a great local butcher, where you will also probably pay 3x more.

Costco brisket and ribs and pork are all elite.

Ribs come with the membrane already removed. That alone is worth the annual membership price.
I just heard about that! Actually huge news to me! hate that ****

Problem is, first time I bought ribs there I didn't know. I wish there was video of me trying to remove the membrane on the rack I opened. I was so frustrated.

My daughter does it by just inserting a butter knife near the center of the rack, loosening the membrane then taking a paper towel to remove it all. I could have her show you when she's home from her sleepover tomorrow.

Read it again. I think you're missing the point.

Our Costco has self checkout

And I have never once got upselled by a Costco manager
They seriously need to provide the scan guns though. Having to take your crap out to scan it just to put it back in is annoying. They're already counting my crap at the door so let me scan it more efficiently.
Costco doesn't have scan guns at self-checkout? I wouldn't be able to handle that.

I get about 50 items each Sunday for business at Sam's. With the gun, I can scan them all in under 15 seconds because of the gun.

It's why I still haven't bothered to do Scan 'n Go. For 5-10 items, sure, it would be convenient. But for 50 or so items, I don't want to fool with my phone going around the store loading all that. I'd just do it all at the end, which is the same as just doing it with a scan gun. Although not getting stuck in line behind a family of 6 arguing about how to scan 3 items would be nice.

But Costco not having them is interesting. They must figure it cuts down on theft making people run everything over the table.

I use self-checkout exclusively and am always met with a very friendly employee who will scan my dog food, paper towels and TP so I don't have to take them out of the cart. Maybe it's unique to our stores, but this happens every time.

However, the fact that I can't use the rebate check at self-checkout is a mild bother. They need to fix that.
Doesn't happen every time but very likely if you have large items. There's only a couple of folks for 6 stations so i think they prioritize folks with heavy items.

I have been all about Costco for the past 10 years or so, but there are a few things that are really grating on me. Self checkout (and checkout in general) is overly convoluted and feels like a thought out plan to get you to buy a little more to feel like dealing with the checkout lanes are worth it. Self Checkout at my local store is an absolute disaster with more than 10 items. I will start using less care than perhaps I should with cases of water and other very heavy items. We do not have hand held scanners. There is rarely anyone there to assist.

The parking lots are atrocious. No stop signs, no one sure who has right of way. Amazed a pedestrian isn't mowed over every week or so.

I just mow them over. they are old any way

I love Costco, but Sam's Club is pretty, pretty good too (Costco 55/45 over Sam's, imo), but I must shout-out Sam's for the recent upgrades on their spice aisle - which they geniusly place at the beginning of my grocery journey. Scan-and-Go is pretty fine too.

Now, if I'm ever in the mood for something half as good at twice the price, there's a Kroger nearby.
Another great thing about Sam's club:
Those gazebos and outdoor structures they sell- they actually will assemble them for you at a reasonable cost, in case you don't have for muscle bound friends with engineering degrees.
I have their XL grill station coming in this week and I have no idea what kind of base I need and whether they include that. Will update results.

There are some things from Costco you can order to include assembly or setup, but a lot less than there should be. We just got some front porch furniture from them.

Direct deposit of rebate check is the shark move. You can do it through the app.

I did not know that. So I can deposit that into my checking account?
Yep. Can set it up through the Citi app or website. I'm assuming you have the Costco Citi visa? You have to have that to be able to do it, I believe.

No Costco Citi. I need to amend that.
The executive memebrship rebate can not be direct deposited.

The CITI Costco Visa rewards can be direct deposited
Whoa whoa whoa......this is life changing. You can?? The FBG baller that I am, my check is quite large. Always have to wait for a manager to literally write one out.
Yes. I’ve done it the last couple years. It should be on the reward statement. I don’t know why anyone would not direct deposit it because then you get more rewards on the purchase you would have made with the check. It’s pretty fast as well.

Another reason to ❤️ Costco, did you know they sell Auto Insurance?

I just spent about 30 minutes on the Costco website entering my VIN's and current coverages and I was able to get a quote and bind coverage on a new 6 month policy for $3,142 instead of the $7,575 USAA jacked my renewal up to after 34 years with no accidents or tickets.

Got the safe driver, good student discounts and roadside assistance was free with the Executive Membership.

Plus kids driving makes things more expensive as well. I’m about to add kid 3 soon.

I checked, just because I was curious:

Top 3 most expensive are NY, Florida and Michigan

I haven't called my agents yet, but ours jumped $250 a month just recently to just over $600. The last ticket/claim we had on car insurance was about 15 years ago. We don't have our kids on ins yet either. I'm rather confident our jumps are because of some stupid laws we have that are unique to Florida.

Damn. The poster I replied to mentioned student discounts so assumed multiple kids which definitely increases the cost.

I got new insurance about two years ago and they initially saved me money but damn if it didn’t go up a lot after renewal so I’m going to look around again. Same situation, no claims in at least 15+ years (knock on wood, nothing for the next 15+ as well).

The Lemon Blueberry Loaf in the bakery section is delicious.

That is all.

Others agree.

I agree with the commenter about having to look the other way when passing the bakery section. It's right next to the produce in ours, and I have to practically run by it to avoid getting anything.
I picked it up, looked at the nutrition label and then put it back down - fast. I knew it would be glorious, but I'd be diving back into Otis' fat thread if I start buying those things

My only beef is when they have a product, you get hooked on it, then they stop carrying it. Still can't find their Foster Farms turkey meatballs. For awhile they killed the Healthy Choice Fudge Bars. And now I can't find their Health Warrior oatmeal. I was seriously hooked on that stuff. So so good.

It's a valid complaint and one they will never address. Nobody there will provide an answer. Just deal with it and move along.

Another problem I have is the reshuffling of the store. I'm a creature of habit. Please don't move items I'm used to finding in the southwest quadrant of your blimp hanger to the eastern center aisle. Jesus.

Went today. Never and I mean never attempt Costco the day before a holiday. What a nightmare.

Yours too? That was tragic. Had to go to their bigger store farther away to get my fix.

Extra annoying that it's intentional and extra extra annoying bc no matter where they shuffle my stuff, I ain't deviating from buying the same stuff

Same. I drove into the parking lot thinking they were giving away free tv's.

I usually park on the far outside and avoid the interior teeth of the parking lot. No spots out there and I made the rookie mistake of going inland looking for a spot. Bad idea! I'm quite certain this is the genesis of 83% of all road rage incidents. My god, I thought I was never going to escape. Finally got out of there and was going to bail when the skies parted and the sun beamed down on a car leaving the outer banks. I gunned the minivan and scooped the spot, doing a victory dance as I exited.

Got everything, then noticed the self check-out line snaked all the way back through the dozens of vitamin and medicine skews and again, almost bailed. But I'll give Costco this- that self check out line moved with the efficiency of a Prussian rail line. They do a terrific job getting people out of there.

These are my only 2 complaints. Moving stuff around and discontinuing items you get hooked on. I've noticed they have 2 different ways they move stuff. Sometimes they just move a whole category to a new location and keep it there a while. Other times they pick one or two items and put all of them at the front of the store or in some other "theme" location. Then a while later it's back in it's usual place. So you are never quite sure if the item is truly gone or they just moved it somewhere. You just have to look around, which I'm sure is their goal.

I was enjoying the Bells Oberon beer for the last few months. Then one day it's not in the same spot, I go hunting around and locate it in some summer-time display with a few other summer-ish drinks. Next time I go, I only see 4 cases left. Now it's been gone for a few weeks. I guess it may not be coming back. With that one product, they hosed me over with the two things I dislike the most about Costco. Thanks guys.

Completely agree. I loved the potato skins they had and can't find them anywhere.

We have not had a auto claim in over 20 years and my rates keep going up and up!

My daughters friend works at Costco. They organize stuff like lawn items early spring, then move them as they sell out to the back. Other stuff they move around so you will have to go through the whole store and buy other items while looking for what you came for.

I think that's SOP for property/casualty insurance, and a big reason why you almost always save $$ by shopping around every few years. Also why they can advertise the "drivers who switched saved $XXX" deal no matter which company is doing it. IDK if they deliberately under-price for new customers, but we always are able to find the same coverage for a few hundred bucks less .

Has anyone ever used the Costco car buying program to get a car?
Tried recently but didn't have much success.

Meh. Their rental car service is fantastic, however. Or used to be. Haven't used it in a while.
Yeah, further explanation in short form: wife's car was totaled and we needed to move fairly quickly. Decided on a specific car (Honda) and tried the Costco program. After going through all of the steps it said there were no dealers in the area (SE VA). Tried expanding the area and still nothing. For S's&G's tried some areas in NC. Finally found 1 dealer in Durham but to find out their super duper pricing I had to go to the dealer with a "certificate" to get the "menu".

I used it once and it had me go to a dealer way out in the sticks and the car I wanted wasn't even available for a test drive. The salesman was awful too.

Has anyone bought furniture from Costco before? Is it a pain to assemble?

We bought a dining set (big, round table with six chairs) from the local Costco and I’m debating on opening the box or just getting a handyman to put it together.

I bought patio furniture - no assembly required. Probably doesn't help.

But if its like other furniture I bought - its probably 2 bolts - per leg that screws into preframed holes

That's only a 1 beer project. You got this.
