Could Tamme take over for Dallas Clark? (1 Viewer)

The numbers seem to indicate that Tamme is producing at a higher rate than Dallas Clark was. I'm not sure what Dallas' contract situation is but Tamme would seem to be a cheaper option. Is there any chance they move Dallas or just not resign him?

Surely. It's happened to better players than Clark in the past. This is the driving reason behind Brett's streak. He always said as soon as you miss time, you open the door to lose your job and he's 100% correct. The salary cap demands attrition. Clark could find himself on the wrong side of the scales if he's making 10x what Tamme is making.

I like the discussion.

Here is his contract info:

On February 19, 2008, the Colts placed the franchise tag Clark. The next day, the Colts signed him to a six-year contract extension, with his salary averaging $4.5 million per year ($41 million in total), making him the highest paid tight end in the NFL.

Absolutely not as long as Dallas is healthy. I've heard this many times by the commentators that Dallas is a much better blocker than Tamme. In real world, TEs that block well are a commodity...

good discussion . . .

the Colts usually release and reload on defense (note all the LBs and CBs) but look at the offensive side of the ball. Glenn retired, Harrison stayed until he (basicailly he was forced to) retire . . . James was basically done after he left Indy - Saturday will probably retire a Colt . . .

In this era we havent seen the Colts let a offensive star walk (that still had value) . . .

Good points. Digging deeper has the this philosophy changed with new coaches at all? Is it possible that problems with CBA will force owners to do things out of character such as Richardson is doing in Carolina? (for those not familiar he is the owner and has always spent money to keep his players and build a winner but this year he let everyone walk away)

I don't think it happens but it is worth noting that Tamme's production has been better than Clark's was this season before he got hurt.

Assuming both return next season, I think the Colts need to find ways to utilize Tamme. I don't see how they can relegate him to bench duty given how productive he's been. Even if you don't think he's as good as Clark (and I don't although it may be close), he's shown he deserves to get on the field and be a part of the passing game in some meaningful fashion going forward.

Who rooms with Peyton in training camp? I think it is Dallas Clark. I know they are very tight and as long as Manning is on the team do not look for anyone to pass Clark. And seriously this thread is a bit funny. All DC did last year was catch over 100 passes.

Tamme in his 6 games has outproduced Clark . hes younger and as good a reciever but no where near as good a blocker. BUT Alot of the reason that Tamme has this success has alot to do with Manning losing alot of other options with Injuries. Tamme is picking up the slack as WR are injured.

Good chance that Clark would be doing that also. Clark is the best TE in the NFL ( with Gates) but Tamme is almost as good and a cheaper option. But I cant see the Colts doing that. Manning was getting hammered latley and Tamme has let alot of guys get by to hit Manning.

I even read we will see more of the blobking TE's (Brody Eldridge ) in this week (if he plays) (more below) to help Tamme. Clark on his blocking alone is worth more then Tamme. Tamme could start for 25 other team in the league hes that good but I cant see them getting rid of Clark who is still great and has a few years left of being elite.

Jacob Tamme has been more productive on offense in five starts this season than Dallas Clark was in his six games before getting injured.

Tamme has caught 38 passes for 369 yards and three touchdowns, which is one more catch, 22 more yards and the same number of touches Clark had in one more game. Tamme isn't as good of a blocker, but the Colts haven't seen a letdown at all from the tight end position on offense. Tamme will be an elite fantasy play down the stretch.

The Indianapolis Colts' offensive line has been atrocious. They might use tight end Brody Eldridge to block more and keep Peyton Manning from quitting football. They might have reached the point where they'll sacrifice a receiving option to give Manning time for plays to develop.

Keep both on the field as much as possible to negate the effectiveness of the growing amount of 3-4 teams.

There is zero chance the Colts start Tamme over a healthy Clark. ZERO!

It's fun to consider, I guess, but laughable to a homer.

The Colts knew what they had in Tamme long before Clark's injury. Tamme is just news to those not familiar with the Colts.

There is a better chance the Colts move Wayne than Clark.

HTH

More good points, thanks guys.

It probably is unlikely but I feel we should probe it fully.

Let's accept that Tamme is a worse blocker. How much will this weigh into the decision to start him over Clark? Is he bad or just not as good as the excellent Clark?

Rooming with Peyton is a good point and I think Manning is pretty loyal. However Manning is not getting any younger and I think the pragmatist in him would do whatever gave him the best chance. Saving money on Clark would help them shore up other areas.

I pretty much agree here, however Clark will be 32 next season. That's getting pretty old for a TE, and injuries tend to crop up even more often for older players.

Here's your answer for 2011 at least.I will add this though. With a 18 game season on the horizon, look for Tamme to get plenty of playing time. Same for many other players and positions.

Clark has a very good relationship with Manning and as such will stay until he decides to leave. As for the poster that said the Colts don't let stars on O walk, they have done so, but it isn't the norm. Faulk and Edge were replaced with cheaper options. This is Manning's team and whatever he says will go. Clark stays - end of story.

:goodposting: Exactly what I was coming in to point out.

What did Randy Moss do last year?

With all their injuries maybe they should just ask Tamme to drop some weight and move him to WR next season.
Perhaps THIS. Remember what the Saints did with Colston, moving him from TE to WR - that worked out well. For sure if Clark returns to health, he will be back on the field - but Tamme has proved he deserves playing time too.

The stats are deceiving here. Jacob Tamme's production is largely due to the fact that defenses don't respect him, so they focus on shutting down the WR's, forcing Manning to target Tamme. Clark is the man if he's healthy and effective.

However, Tamme still has dynasty value because he's the only healthy TE with the athleticism to beat a LB in single coverage. Clark's injury (loose ligament in his hand, iirc) is an uncommon one, and it's difficult to project how long his recovery will take and how fully he will recover, especially for a guy who's north of 30. Tony Gonzalez has obscured the fact that TE's don't typically stay effective into their mid-30's. The Colts have a decision to make when their first and second round picks come around this year: do they invest in their TE of the future, or do they count on Clark returning with Tamme as the insurance policy. If they choose the 2nd option, Tamme is exactly the kind of high upside guy that can pick up value quickly.

Simply a product of the system.

Not if you believe Gregg Easterbrook.

• Dallas Clark. Last season, he won the coveted "longest award in sports," the Tuesday Morning Quarterback Non-Quarterback Non-Running Back NFL MVP. Clark was chosen for "his disruptive impact on opposing secondaries." Now that disruption is missing, and safeties can choke up on Reggie Wayne and Pierre Garcon running the Colts' predictable routes.Clark's backup, Jacob Tamme, is OK but nowhere near as effective and not a good blocker. Because the Indianapolis line has long been so good, the Colts' offense is based on five-man patterns, the hardest kind to defend. Against the Chargers, Indianapolis tried to run five-man patterns, and when this wasn't working, by the second half, Tamme was staying in the backfield to block. He did not do well. The Colts have a blocking tight end on the roster, Gijon Robinson, but they use him only at the goal line because they've always believed pinpoint Manning passes are the answer to all questions. Problems at tight end are spoiling this formula -- and, perhaps, proving Clark truly was last season's non-quarterback non-running back MVP.

Why? Tamme is cheap and the Colts need bodies that can catch. I can see both of them playing at the same time next season.
