Cowboys getting ready for big game (1 Viewer)

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Going into a tough final month that will determine whether the preseason NFC favorite Dallas Cowboys even make the playoffs, coach Wade Phillips unveiled a new strategy Wednesday: rest.

Phillips sent home Terrell Owens and four other 30-something starters before the full-squad workout and said he might keep doing it.

"I just think it's the time of year ... we need to take a look at resting some of these guys, take them off their feet," Phillips said. "It'll keep them fresher this time of the season. That's something I felt like we needed to do."

Owens, Greg Ellis, Flozell Adams, Zach Thomas and Marc Colombo went to meetings in the morning, a walkthrough of this week's game plan and a film session. Then they left, even though the entire team was off four of the previous five days and weren't in pads on the one day they did work.

Phillips said the time off before Wednesday was irrelevant. He's concerned about limiting how much practice time those guys log Wednesday through Saturday.

"It doesn't matter what they did before. It's the work week," he said. "If they work this week, then their legs are going to be a certain way this week. ... You still get worn down the same amount if you spend that time on the field this week, in my opinion."

On the practice report, their absence was described as "not injury related — resting veterans." That line might appear the next few weeks, too.

"It's a good possibility," Phillips said. "We did it some (last season), but not as much."

Phillips' approach is sure to draw scrutiny considering Dallas (8-4) is fighting for a wild-card berth in the playoffs and will have to really earn its way in. The Cowboys' next three foes currently have the NFL's three best defenses, starting with the top-ranked Steelers (9-3).

Dallas also is trying to overcome a growing tradition of failure this time of year. The Cowboys haven't had a winning record over regular-season games played in December and January since 1996, which also was the last season they won a playoff game. It's the longest stretch without a playoff win in franchise history, heightened by a flop after going 13-3 under Phillips last season.

Heading into the final month on a three-game winning streak, Dallas likely needs a 3-1 finish to secure a wild-card berth. Going 2-2 might be enough, but there's a risk of getting squeezed out on tiebreakers.

So, with players needing to be at their very best down the stretch, Phillips is gambling that practicing less will help. He also prefers sitting guys all at once rather than spreading it out "because of the practice schedule and what we have to get accomplished."

"There are certain things we have to get accomplished throughout the week," he said. "Missing certain days would not be good in some cases."

DeMarcus Ware (hyperextended knee) and Marion Barber (dislocated pinkie toe) also missed practice Wednesday. Phillips said they likely won't practice Thursday, either, but he's hopeful both can play Sunday.

Adam "Pacman" Jones was among those who did practice — in his pajamas. The recently unsuspended cornerback wore a pair of shorts on top of blue pajama pants with Homer Simpson's face all over the legs and the phrase "I'm so smart."

High winds forced the team into their indoor practice facility, and a deejay set up inside to blare music to simulate the expected crowd noise at Heinz Field. However, during the time reporters were allowed to watch, the music wasn't all that loud. In fact, several players were swaying and dancing to the beat.

The party atmosphere was heightened by the presence of about 35 fans, many of them taking pictures and having photos taken with former Cowboys offensive lineman Nate Newton. Fans often watch outdoor practices from a holding area, but by being indoors they were right up against the sideline.

"It's just part of it. I don't think our players notice. I don't notice," Phillips said. "Same thing when you're playing a game, you don't notice the crowd. So when you're practicing, you shouldn't notice the people out there."

Nothing like getting ready for the elements by practicing indoors. I pray this season ends the Phillips regime. The whole attitude of this team and coaching staff is embarrassing.

I'm not sure if this is funny or sad.Nice to see the Cowboys giving Pacman plenty of rope.

If this was any other team it would be a non story. Funny thing though is the Steelers were practicing outside and almost lost thier starting QB because of poor field conditions please correct me if im wrong but didnt Willie Parker get hurt earlier in the season practicing on the same field? Can you imagine the press if Wade Phillips lost Marion Barber and Tony Romo got nicked up because they didnt practice indoors. Man I cant even imagine it would be the top story on ESPN and would probably be at the least a 5 page thread on this board.

because he was wearing pijama bottoms under shorts at practice. I mean, the guy is a headache in a suitcase but who the f cares about something like that?I'd be more owrried about the seeming lack of intensity the article conveys...but who knows what was really going on there.

I guess that's my point, if they're this lax with him at practice you wonder how disciplined he is on his own off the field.

I'm missing something here.Do you think this would be a non issue if the Giants had players off, others practicing in pajamas, and even more dancing instead of getting ready for a big game?Do you think once Willie got hurt the Steelers should have sold the land and moved to another practice facility? Not trying to be wise, I think I must be missing something in your post

If it were the Cowboys that were 11-1 and in 1st place with a 3 game cushion...fine. But last I checked they aren't even the #6 seed yet meaning they would be home...all of them if the playoffs started today. Wade is acting like they need to pace themselves for the stretch run...they better play balls to the wall because if they don't bring their A game...let me restate that, their AAAAAA game...if they don't bring everything and the kitchen sink this week in Pittsburgh they will get rocked out of the building.

Now I happen to think Dallas has a great chance to win but Pittsburgh is going to be playing like a crazed bunch of wild animals on Sunday, Dallas better be prepared. They drop to 8-5 and you can start cueing up the fat lady for them.

Take a look back as recently as week 17 last year and see how Coughlin and the Giants came down on rest vs. ready for his team in a "meaningless" game.

A good argument can be made that playing that game with all hands on deck and taking the Pats to the wire launched the Giants on their Superbowl run.

But some things just make the Cowboys the Cowboys...

I do think this would be a non issue if it was the Giants because hey there the superbowl champs and no is going to question them unless they lose. Unfortunately for the Cowboys they lost two playoff games in the past two years and now are struggling to make the playoffs so EVERY action is going to looked at under a microscope. My point about the Steelers was that if the Cowboys practiced outside and Romo got hurt because of the muddy terrain everyone would be calling for Wade Phillips head basically the Cowboys are in a no win situation because of the past losses and expectations for this team.

If I was a Cowboys fan I'd be less concerned about whether the Cowboys seemingly lackadaisical practice attitude is a story garnering more attention then you think it deserves and more concerned about what it says about the teams preparedness and attitude to "fight it out" each and every Sunday. Perhaps the team is professional and veteran enough to "just turn on Sunday" but recent history for this team this time of year doesn't seem to indicate that.

I agree its been very frustrating as a fan to watch this team the past couple of years coast into the playoffs. I think it might actually be a blessing that they have to fight it out to make the playoffs.

I don't agree but maybe it's because I'm thinking big picture too. The Cowboys, IMO, easily have the most talented roster in the NFL. (As of now, they are out of the playoffs losing a tiebreaker)If a team can't make the playoffs with a roster so loaded the coach has to be questioned. So, next natural thought goes to what did the coach do wrong? what could he do differently etc and here's this practicing in pajamas and just clowning around article. Another way to do this would be if you think of it in regards to some great coach. Do you think BB, Fisher, Cowher, Shanny, Parcells, Gibbs would win with this team? I do and feel like I'm dead certain they would. To put it yet another way, would Barry Switzer win with this team?I think the focus is entirely on Wade

See thats the thing Parcells was the coach here and had most of the same players on the roster today and he didnt win with this team. When Wade came everyone was like cool this is just what this team needed a players coach and here we are. Its not the coach its the players and their lack of chemistry.

I think there's been quite a bit of turnover since BP was there, plus Romo getting experience too

Cowboys had 4 turnovers in the first half and the game ended with Romo and Witten not being on the same page as to what route to run.

Some good happenned in between there but....I really believe that sloppiness is a result of the practice stuff we discussed earlier. I don't even think, as a rookie, Witten was that off on his routes. How else could you explain Witten not running the right routes and/or Romo not throwing to the right spot?
