Even as a Cowboys fan, it's hard to agree with the NFL's decision to just re-play downs in which a kicked football hits the huge video screen.

I know this topic has been discussed ad nauseam but thought I'd create a poll. What a bad decision by the NFL.

Goddell said he can change the decision at any time if it becomes a problem . I expect it to be raised after the season at the latest. IMO there is no chance it will still be at 90 ft when the Super Bowl is played there.

jumbotrons in general are a waste of time and money. why watch TV when you can see the real action on the field? i know, those in the nosebleed seats can get a good view, but it's just the same as watching TV at home.

Should have been left as it is.

No new rule. Teams have added element of skill to games.

Entirely within preset regulations

True. Goddell was explicit in stating that he can change his decision. Jerry Jones and Gooddell are at an impasse as to who will cover the cost of raising the jumbotron. It's already been noted that the jumbotron will be raised for a U2 concert a couple of months from now. Rather than squabble over it and have either Jones or the NFL spend millions to raise the scoreboard, my guess is that they are simply waiting for that U2 concert wherby the concert promoter will foot the cost of raising the board. After that, Jerry can leave the board at that new height, and Roger can say that he revisited the rule. All parties are happy... to a certain degree.

They have to raise it for a U2 concert in a few weeks anyway. They should just leave it at the new height after the concert.

the problem is that they have to disconnect the electronics in order to raise it for U2. so basically it will be a non-working TV if kept at that height after the U2 concert is done.

Yeah, I never want to see a replay or get a better look at a close call when I'm at a game.

They can't reconnect the electronics in the new position?
Or somewhere between the new position and the current position?

Evidently it can't. If raising it another 10 feet or so would not cause a problem it would already be at that height. Something you guys may not be taking into consideration is this. Goodell had all of the facts before this last game and was ok with it. His response was pretty easy to predict.

I'd like to see that too. This really just smacks of Jerry thumbing his nose because he's technically within the rules.
from this link:
The boards are going higher to fit the stage for a U2 concert in October, but the screens will have to be disconnected. To lift the boards and keep them operable will require engineering and architectural adjustments.

I will respond to this and clarify my opinion that I DO think the jumbotrons are awesome and really give fans at the game a perspective they normally wouldn't have.I just wish Jerry would fix the situation and help put the focus back on the product. Not his ambition.

the decision was fine. the scoreboard is 5 ft higher than league requirements, and the titan's kicker was TRYING to hit it, which is the only reason he did. i don't think it'll play a huge role in games...

Great decision by the NFL. Why overreact to one backup punter that was trying to hit it during a preseason game. It may turn out to be a big problem that does need to be fixed at some point this season, or in the off season, but let them play more than one game there to try and determine if it really is a problem.

So it can be done. It's just a matter of making adjustments.

"For the last month, we have been in the process of installing equipment that will permit the lowering of the board in the future, allowing us to maximize the board for a variety of special events other than football games. This work will continue into early October."
Dallascowboys.comSo they're willing to make the adjustments to lower it out of their own pocket. But not to raise it.

Sounds like they want to be able to lower it to do some cool shows so they can get more business and bring in more revenue. Raising it must cause problems with either the viewing angles the way it is currently designed or something else. Sure appears that Goodell has been kept in the loop on this thing since the beginning and likes the big screen idea so I wouldn't worry about it.
