Crabtree Assessment (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
5 receptions for 56 yards.

I was unable to watch the game. I know he was projected to play approximately 1/2 the snaps. For those of you that watched the game - a few questions:

(1) How many snaps did he actually see?

(2) How many times was he targeted?

(3) How did he look overall?

I was amazed that he was starting after only a few weeks of practice and from the stat line he did very well for his first game.

(1) He played essentially the entire game.

(2) I don't know how many times he was targeted but he only had one drop that I can recall.

(3) He looked mighty impressive. He made several catches in tight coverage, ran great routes, and displayed great hands overall. Dude's as good as advertised.

He looked good, and assuming Alex Smith is the QB going forward, Vernon Davis was his go to target int he red zone.

he looked like he belonged there. he made some hard catches look easy. Unless alex smith is playing, I don't think he's worth a start though. he looks like a PPR guy

Crabs looked good out there. Looked liked the best wr on the niners already if thats saying something.
I just don't know if it was Crabtree or Smith that made the difference. Once Smith came in, both Morgan & Davis looked quite a bit better also. Crabtree really did go after the ball & obviously has very good hands, but Smith made a big difference at QB.

I didn't watch the game, but I'll catch the ShortCut version this week (best reason to have Sunday Ticket, IMO). Just from the statline, considering the lack of prep, Crabtree held his own & then some.

Sounds like Crabtree played the whole game (or close to it), & if he did, that tells you something about his work ethic (staying in shape). The kid may be kind of a PITA, but he may very well be a FF stud sooner rather than later (with decent QBing). Not expecting a whole bunch this season, but I could see Crabtree being a strong WR2 in 2010 & a monster in 2011.

Is it really all that worth while to assess any player going against the Hou D?
:kicksrock:
Uh, wrong. You haven't been paying attention the last three weeks or so, have you? Ask the Bengals what they think of the Texans defense. Or Kurt Warner and Ken Whisenhunt. Or Shaun Hill and Frank Gore. The Texans defense absolutely dominated the Niners offense in the first half--to the tune of 50 yards and three first downs allowed. I'm not saying the defense is among the league elite, but they are young and very talented and starting to gel. Crabtree's solid performance was not a function of the Texans playing crappy on the defensive side of the line of scrimmage but of Crabtree's skills as a receiver. He belongs.

From Maiocco:

-Crabtree played 89-percent of the 49ers' offensive plays. Here is how many plays the 49ers' wideouts played today (the 49ers had 54 snaps on offense):

Crabtree 48

Morgan 38

Bruce 36

Battle 1

 Crabtree a WR3 moving forward?PS A shame Battle wastes away on that roster. He'd be a fantastic slot WR on a good passing team. :goodposting:

Crabtree looked good, like he deserved to be on the field. And assuming the SF passing game is at least decent the remainder year, his numbers should be solid going forward, imho. WR3 stats are attainable, I believe.

And even if they are bad (which they're not), it's still an NFL defense, and his first time playing against one.

If I did not know he had heldout, I would not have thought it. Not perfect, but with no training camp, no preseason games and with both Shaun Hill and Alex smith throwing to him he looked like a professional WR.

I've been a staunch detractor of Crabtree, not believing that his talents would translate very well to the pro game. After watching his debut almost in its entirety, I'd say that he looks like he is well on his way to a very fine career......once they get a legit QB in town.

Kid looked very fluid/smooth, and has hands like pteradactyl claws......just snares the ball out of the air. Hey, I'm never too stubborn to admit a mistake on a guy. Not to go overboard or anything, but for the limited amount of preparation this kid has had, he looked very good in his 1st NFL game.

:)

I expect him to post Top 20 #'s the rest of the year.

They made a conserted [sp] effort to involve him last week. [Especially I believe the first pass he received -- looked very Texas Tech like]. Showed tremendous ability to snatch the ball.

Last 2 weeks: He's WR18 in PPR [likely WR20 after Colston/White play].

It's remarkable what this guy is doing off the street basically the past 2 weeks. Looks great running routes & they're really targetting him in the passing game. Can only imagine what he'll be like next year with a full offseason. I think we can safely say he's going to translate just fine to the big leagues.

Looked pretty good...much more polished than I expected...seemed a lot more raw at Tech.
Says the guy who is wrong about most everything and has enough suspensions from this board to make even Steve Howe blush.BTW, Crabtree has looked every bit as effective as his performance suggested at TT. Very impressed with this kid.

He has excellent hands.... Heyward-Bey could only dream of having that type of catching ability.
Anybody that watched 1 qtr. of each of their college games could see that Crabtree's hands are 100 times better than DHB's. DHB was drafted higher on speed alone....this is the ONLY facet of his that is better than Crabtrees. You'd think by now NFL GM's would know better.

He runs a sweet 10-15 yard out route - gets wide open on the sidelines.

They do. DHB was drafted by the Al Davis.

I get all the bashing on DHB and agree with parts of it ... but .... it would be interesting to see what he could do on a real offense and real team (i doubt he would be an all pro but this raiders squad has a way of making decent players look really bad)

:) I forgot more about football this weekend than you'll ever know...and I have stats to back that.
Given your memory complaints, perhaps you need a resource for help: LinkI am quite comfortable talking circles around your vacant knowledge of the game. Being suspended by Joe more than anybody else <> knowledge.

Anyone starting Crabtree at this point? If you are, is anyone worried about the matchup this week? Tennessee was giving up a lot to WRs, but now Finnegan is back, and he just shut down MSW, who is a roughly similar player and had been hot.

I own Crabtree and have sat him down the first two weeks in favor of Collie, but this week I am starting him. He is definelty the focal point of the offense and don't forget that this week was TN 1st win this season. MSW doesn't have another solid WR/TE player to attract attention from the secondary, Holt is not that guy, but I think Vernon and Josh Morgan can do that for the 49ers. This will allow Crabtree to get one on one coverage which is all he needs, and thats all you can ask for because you know he will get at least 8 targets, which is a conservative estimate. In addition they have Gore who demands constant blitzes leaving the secondary vunerlable.START HIM! LOL

Despite shutting down Gerrard and MSW last week, Tenn is still the worst pass defenses in the league. Gerrard plays awful in away games and beat himself as much as Tenn did. Crabtree will likely get plenty of looks in one on one coverage and has the skills to take it to the house. With that said, I don't think he is a must start at this point and I think this really depends on who else you have available, . He is still new to the team with a new starting quarterback. Right now he is vying for my flex spot with McCoy, my decision depends on Westbrook news later in the week.

how did he look yesterday?

from reading the thread, it sounded like there was a play overturned which could have resulted in another 20 yards or so but overall he put up a solid rookie game I would guess.

for all the time he missed I think he looks pretty good. the only worry I would have about him would be the qb and system/play calling in Frisco.

his talent and performance won't be a reason he doesn't put up numbers.

He had a circus one-handed catch while falling out of bounds that was ruled incomplete. It was challenged and the call was upheld (I think he maintained control but the replay showed he couldn't quite get his second foot down before his other leg landed out of bounds...definitely not enough to overturn but also an impressive effort).Overall, I thought he looked like a talented rookie who is ahead of where I would have expected given the hold-out. He still makes some rookie plays though: had a drop that looked very catchable--looked like he took his eyes off the ball. My amateur scouting report:Pros- shows quickness and athleticism to get the ball even when he appears well-covered.- surprising amount of polish for a rookie in his 4th game.- the 49ers appear determined to feed him the ballCons- he is still a rookie and will make some rook mistakes- doesn't have blazing straight line speed- the 49ers will try to play smash-mouth football any time they have a lead (fortunately that may not be that often)
