Tremendous Upside

Footballguy
There were seven every day players in all of baseball last year with OPS+ of 80 or less. The Royals project to have FIVE IN THEIR OPENING DAY LINEUP. And that is assuming that Josh Fields, with his 68 OPS+ in 268 plate appearances last year, does not win a place in the lineup. And he could. The Royals like his bat.
– Two of those players — Yuniesky Betancourt and Jason Kendall — have been locked up by the Royals.– Jose Guillen had an OPS+ of 80, but did not get enough at-bats to qualify for the batting title — he and his $13 million contract will be in the everyday lineup as either a DH or (gasp) a right fielder.– Chris Getz, who had an OPS+ of 74 in 415 plate appearances (not enough to qualify) was acquired by the Royals and figures to be in the everyday lineup at second base.– And now, Brian N. Anderson, with his career 69 OPS+ is the leading candidate to be the Opening Day centerfielder. That is just ridiculousRoyals front office needs to be put out of its misery

Wow. That is horrible.

THe worst part is, they signed some of these guys to longer than 1 year deals!

David DeJesus is fine in LF. ALberto Callaspo, for some reason, is slated to come off the bench. And I think Billy Butler is on the cusp of great things, guy is going to be a great offensive player (although he is atrocious on D). Other than that? Absolutely nothing on the major league level. Kila Ka'aihue, offers some hope, but that offense needs an overhaul. It's too bad, because they have some good pitching.

They should see what the market is like for Soria, he could probably get them a solid haul of prospects.

Agree on Soria

What's the point in having a really good closer for a team that will struggle to win 65 games?

Add in the injury rate of pitchers and the fact he had some arm issues last year IIRC, and I definitely think they should look to see what they can get for him

Royals fans have the worst of it, maybe in all of sports. David Glass is one of the worst things that ever happened to baseball.

The hardest part is that nothing changes until Glass (and probably his whole family) are removed from the picture. And that doesn't happen for a very long time.

I tip my hat to Royals fans - you deserve better.

As Studs says, "Now here where it get crazy."UZR/150 in 2009:

Betancourt: -23.9

Guillen: -36.4 :lmao:

Getz: -6.7

B. Anderson (CF): 7.3 :porked:

And this guy has a pretty sweet methodology for catcher defense, where he ranked 114 catchers from last year...Jason Kendall didn't make the top 100.

Absolutely mind boggling. Seriously. That is just horrible management.I understand, they don't have a ton of money to spend. But why give multi year contracts to horrible players? They need to look at the MArlins to see how to field a competitive team on a shoe string budget.

The Royals have some big time hitting prospects coming up through their system. But will Glass surround them with a competent team? Doubtful.
