Cribbs optimistic he will play Sunday (1 Viewer)

Thanks, I picked him up in the last round of my draft. My league awards pts for return yards. If Cribbs makes an impact on offense, which all signs are pointing to, he's even more valuable to me in PPR.

Cribbs optimistic he will play Sunday

by Mary Kay Cabot

Monday September 07, 2009, 7:30 PM

Browns receiver Josh Cribbs said he's "very optimistic" about resolving his contract dispute with the Browns, but still made no guarantee he'll be on the field Sunday without a new deal.

"I can't tell you what I'm going to do," he said. "I really can't tell you. I can tell you hopefully I'll be out there. I want to be out there. I anticipate being out there, and that's about it."

The Browns have continued to talk to Cribbs' agent, J.R. Rickert, and the tone has been positive.

"I always hope for the best," said Cribbs, who is listed as the starting receiver opposite Braylon Edwards on the first official depth chart of the season. "You've got to prepare for the worst, but I keep hoping for the best. [Coach Eric] Mangini and [General Manager George] Kokinis have been men of their word and thus far they've shown me that they want me to be an impactful player on the team. I think things will work themselves out." When the TV cameras swarmed a few minutes later, Cribbs didn't let on that he was still waffling. Asked if there was any doubt he'd be there on Sunday, he said, "Not in my mind. Maybe a lot of other people speculate, probably my agent, he has doubt, I don't know. But I plan to be here on Sunday."

He said he has the last word, "but I pay [my agents] to advise me on doing the right thing that's best for me and my family. My decision right now, I'm going to play on Sunday. I don't know what's going to happen up there [in the front office], but I don't have concern with that right now."

He said once he starts the season, he won't back out.

"You can't just leave guys in the fire like that," he said. "Once I'm in, I'm in for the long haul. It means a lot to them for me to be there and it means a lot for me to be there. I know I'll be out there, but everything else, I can't really tell the future."

Cribbs is really listed on the depth chart as the starting #2 right now?
Sweet aint it? with KR/PR yardage alone I was happy, add in #2 WR number and he will beat out Fitzgerald in total scoring! Not bad for a late round flyer...now he just needs to get a new contract to easy my mind.It will be interesting to see if there is anything to the rumor of Cribbs being in on Defense some too.

Joshua Cribbs-WR- Browns Sep. 7 - 8:31 pm et

Josh Cribbs said Monday that he's "optimistic" the Browns will resolve his contract dispute, but wouldn't guarantee that he'll play in Week 1.

"I can tell you hopefully I'll be out there," Cribbs said. "I anticipate being out there, and that's about it." Cribbs was listed as the starting flanker on the Browns' revised Monday depth chart. Assuming Cribbs plays Sunday (which he almost certainly will), he'll be quality option in return-yardage leagues.

Dannnnnnnng! Now I don't know how to get this guy off my bench and into my starting lineup since I drafted him next to the last round in my draft. I feel like a coach who has all of these toys to play with.

I'd like to start him week one but with Gore, Leon, Bowe, and Royal that's hard to do. But I'm so LOVING THIS NEWS!!! :blackdot:

Cribbs could be huge in PR/KR return yard leagues as the #2 WR. Even if he adds 400 yards receiving (and no TDs) on top of last year's return yards (which were down from years past) he would have been a top 25 receiver in my league. 600 receiving yards and he would have been top 15.

NFL Rumors: Will Josh Cribbs Hold Out?

September 08, 2009 By: Scott Category: Cleveland Browns

It appears to be make or break time for Josh Cribbs in regard to his stance on his current contract. If you recall, Cribbs skipped the early portions of the voluntary minicamp with teammate Phil Dawson, as both players were on a strike of sorts due to their respective situations..

Cribbs then was allegedly told to come to camp and that the team would consider increasing his pay - he is currently in the third year of his six-year, $6.7 million deal. Thus, Cribbs came to camp and did not hold out during any portion of the mandatory minicamp.

He did so while putting a bit of a caveat, claiming that he would consider holding out when things mattered most: the regular season. But with the team apparently not budging regarding Cribbs’ quest for a pay increase, will the special teams star stay true to his word?

If judging by this week’s practice, it doesn’t appear so as No. 16 was present at yesterday’s practice as the Browns gear up for opening weekend against the Vikings. And he was doing a lot more than simply giving the defense a look at what they may find in Percy Harvin.

At this stage, Cribbs has very little leverage beyond his importance to the team. If he were to sit out, he would not make any money, forfeiting one week’s salary at the considerably low rate. Even if he were to demand a trade, the team owns his rights through 2012 - the beauty of the NFL contract.

With any contract debate, there are two sides to the story with supporters of each argument. Cribbs signed a six-year deal; he should be required to hold up his end. But in the same, his contract is in no way guaranteed. And while he was “just a special teams guy,” the official depth chart lists Cribbs as the starting wide receiver opposite Braylon Edwards. Needless to say, there are not many starting wide receivers bringing home less than $1 million this season.

Of course, the team may want to see what they can get out of the talented return man in the passing game before they make any moves with their wallet. Regardless of which side of the debate you are on, it appears that even without a new deal, Josh Cribbs will be in uniform come Sunday at 1PM. At this point, he can prove whether or not he is worth more than his current wage.

For the sake of the Browns offense, I hope he more than proves his point.

#2? Sweeeeeet! Return league owners everywhere rejoice!

Now if only they'd trade Braylon and make Cribbs the #1.

The perfect out for Mangini and Kokinis to rework the deal is making him #2 WR. He earned the spot and certainly outperformed the deal so it makes sense to adjust the contract. I have faith that Cribbs will be on the field.

He's a beast- if Edwards gets rid of the dropsies, I can truly see a WR corps rivaling Fitzgerald and Boldin as long as Cribbs stays in there. He makes people miss, breaks tackles, and is a playmaker. If he runs crisp routes, watch out.

Cribbs will be a career long Kick returner. I dont think he has what it takes to be a starting WR in the NFL. Furrey is the true #2 WR in this offense regardless of what the team website says.

I've seen some of your posts, so take it easy. And calm down on the exclamation points, guy.

I think Cribbs is going to surprise a lot of people. He will be a better Percy Harvin than Percy Harvin this year. What I mean by that is the Browns are going to get the ball in Cribbs' hands just about any way they can and Cribbs has the talent to make the most of that. I don't think Cribbs is as talented as Harvin but Harvin is a rookie and will struggle IMO while Cribbs is ready for the role this season.

DawgPound and other homers - is Furrey really expected to be the #2 wr there or is the depth chart accurate for the probable end of year production?

Furrey is 32 years old and 3 seasons removed from his only 1000-yard season. Not that I think he's going to be a bust, but I do think his ceiling is in the 900-yard range.Cribbs has had 4 seasons to become the next Dante Hall/Percy Harvin/slash. It failed to materialize.

You are right, but you are also looking at a player who got his 1000 yards receiving as the #2 option behind Roy Williams. The next Year Megatron came on the Scene. I dont care who you are, you pretty much need to be in an extremely good offense with an extremely good QB to get 1000 yards as the #3 guy. and with Roy Williams and Megatron ahead of you on the depth chart, it aint happening. After that Things in Detroit fell apart and I dont think you can blame this guy.

I've seen him play, and he has reliable hands and runs pretty good routes. He's better on timing routes, but with the above being said, this is still better than what I have seen from any other WR on that team with the exception of Braylen Edwards. Say what you want about him otherwise, but he's still the #2 WR on this team unless Cribbs suddenly develops hands and learns to run good routes.

I'm a Browns fan (ugh) but moved a few months ago so I'm not as in tune to what the Browns want to do as I was in the past- so take my take with a bit o salt.I see Furry as a 50 catch 600 yard guy in this offense. They have basically nothing as far as a receiving TE goes so I expect Furry to do a lot of the shorter routes that TEs would normally do against a defense. If Quinn is the QB his accuracy could make him a good football (but not fantasy) player for the Browns with as many as 750 yards on 60-65 receptions. Cribbs will work both the outside and the middle (being tough as nails) and could go for 1000 combines yards + 4-5 completions thrown in from trick plays as a ceiling. Maybe 5-6 TDs. Hes looked good in camp and has the best shot at being a productive receiver on this team.

Cribbs was an undrafted FA that played QB in school. His ability to become one of the leagues to return men as fast as he did is a good indication of how athletic he is. This is more like his 2nd/3rd year a receiver in the NFL than his 4th year "ok hes done nothing in 4 years lets move on" kind of player.

Athleticism has never been his issue.there are a couple of deep routes he can run reasonably well, but overall, his route running sucks. His separation skills are sub par, and his hands are not that great.part of the problem is he spent a fair portion of his college career as a QB, and he cannot be blamed for this, but at the end of the day, athleticism can only get you so far.Everyone in the NFL is a pretty good athlete for the most part, and he needs something more to make him stand out.... To date I have seen nothing else from the guy. And this is probably why he has been a career special teams player so far.

I think Cribbs has the potential to great in return-yardage leagues.

He was named as the starting wide receiver opposite Braylon Edwards. He performed very well in the preseason making a number of big plays in the passing game, run game, and return game. Training camp reports seem to suggest that his receiving skills look much more polished than ever before, and Mangini seems to have been impressed with what he has seen.

Game 1 - 2 catches for 30 yards (22 yard long), 29 yard end around

Game 2 - 1 catch for 20 yards, 84 yard punt return TD, 95 yard KO return TD (nullified by penalty)

Game 3 - 2 catches for 31 yards (18 yard long)

In my return yardage league that awards 1 point per 25 return yards, Cribbs finished as the #39 WR in total points in 2008 and #27 in total points in 2007.

Even if you project Cribbs' receiving statistics relatively conservatively, the additional points he could accumulate by being used more on offense vault him into being a legitimate starting fantasy WR.

If he puts up 300 yards receiving and 3 TDs in addition to his return yardage last year, he would have finished as the #12 WR behind Randy Moss and Eddie Royal.

If he puts up 400 yards and 4 TDs in addition to his return yardage last year, he would have finished as the #7 WR behind Steve Smith and ahead of Anquan Boldin.

Give him 500 yards and 5 TDs and he finishes as the #4 WR behind Andre Johnson and ahead of Greg Jennings.

If he had a true breakout season at WR (which is probably unlikely yet possible), he could easily finish as the #1 WR in return yardage leagues.

Essentially, if Cribbs contributes in any mildly significant way as a receiver on offense while continuing to return kickoffs and punts, he could easily turn out to be a top 10 WR in total points in return-yardage leagues.

It's hard to top that upside with any other guy that might be available on your waiver wire.

Now, you just have to hope that Cribbs keeps his word that he will play Sunday and that he doesn't hold out due to the ongoing contract dispute.

So what are your conservative projections for him this year? My league awards 1pt per 20 yds and that makes him even more valuable based on your above assessment of his potential for this year.

I think that it's pretty hard to give specific projections at this point, considering that Mangini has suggested that he could potentially rotate the receivers lining up at flanker between Cribbs, Furrey, Robiskie, and Massaquoi. Mangini said last week that he could change the starter based on matchups. I think we'll have to see how Cribbs is used in the offensive gameplans and how he performs these first few weeks before I'd feel confident giving any type of statistical projection. It's certainly not set in stone that Cribbs will produce good numbers as a receiver, but he apparently was impressive enough in the preseason and in camp to start out atop the depth chart, which I think is more promising that anyone initially believed. As I said, if he evolves into any sort of consistent threat in the receiving game, then he could potentially put up top 10 WR numbers. We'll have to see how involved he actually is once the season starts, but I think the potential to produce elite fantasy numbers in return yardage leagues is certainly there.

Thanks for the response. I'm really hoping Cribbs can take advantage of the offensive opporttunity that he has. He'll should be more than motivated with a possible contract extension to work for.

Is he still returning Punts and Kickoffs? If he had a modest 30 catches 600 yards and 4 TD's he would be a monster in my league
He is listed as the top kickoff returner and punt returner on the depth chart, played in such a role in the preseason games, and there has been no indication that that would change this year.

How big?

I am in a .5 ppr and 1 pt per 10 yards receiving and 1pt per 20 return yards.

I really want to start Cribbs this weekend but can't find a spot in my lineup

I know what you mean. I really, really, want to start Cribbs...but I'd have to bench AJ, Calvin, or Jennings. It's a nice problem to have, but I really want to put him in my lineup. I've considered doing something crazy but I can't quite bring myself to do it.

Well, if the game turns out how most think, and your league rewards for kickoff returns, this could actually help. I think this game will be a blow out, with a lot of kick offs by Minnesota. Could mean a lot of return yards for Cribbs. Also, the Brownies could be throwin a bunch to catch up. I'd like to start him, but I'll resist until I see what he's actually going to do on O. Do we know if that contract issue is cleared up, and whether he's actually playing or not?

I know what you mean. I really, really, want to start Cribbs...but I'd have to bench AJ, Calvin, or Jennings. It's a nice problem to have, but I really want to put him in my lineup. I've considered doing something crazy but I can't quite bring myself to do it.
dont do it...wait and see how he does in this role...and vs minny wont help ...play your proven players this week...just sayin
Do we know if that contract issue is cleared up, and whether he's actually playing or not?
bump for news on Cribbs. Does anyone know what the deal is?
According to Cribbs's Twitter page:
I'm so ready... I got on my new pajamas on ready to go to bed so I can wake up tomorrow and play...
http://twitter.com/joshcribbs16I am simultaneously annoyed with myself for joining the Twitter-citing community and yet impressed that I was able to get information about Cribbs's playing status directly from Cribbs himself.

In addition to his 207 return yards and punt return TD, it was promising to see Cribbs get two goal-line carries in the Wildcat formation in consecutive plays even though he was unable to convert. Against weaker defensive lines than the Vikings, Cribbs might just be able to rack up a number of rushing TDs this year as well.

With our scoring system with return yards

greg Jennings got me 18.24 points.

Joshua Cribbs got me 42.40 points!!!

Damn, should have benched AJ. Oh well still got the win.

I know Cribbs got a lot of work, but how did he look? Crisp routes? Good hands?

I'd like to hear more about the wildcat formation at the GL - I am guessing they will do this once or twice a game?

Cribbs looks like money as my #3WR in a league where i get 1 pt per 20 return yards and 1 pt per 10 receiving yards.

If he could sneak in some rushing TD's I'd be estatic.

He only got 3 targets in the passing game. He'll need to up that a fair amount if he's really going to dominate.

yeah, well, he caught two of those passes and that's encouraging. it would be swell if he was targeted more though...

 DUDE, PUFF PUFF PASS!!!!

I like Cribbs, I do...... I am a big fan of his, but HA on the above bolded staement!
Cribbs will be a career long Kick returner. I dont think he has what it takes to be a starting WR in the NFL. Furrey is the true #2 WR in this offense regardless of what the team website says.
He did have 3 rushes and 2 recs last game. So they are trying to get him the ball in various ways. Could be hopeful.
