Cris Carter and His Very Asinine Statement (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
On ESPN First Take today, Cris Carter said what had to be one of the most asinine pieces of analysis I heard in a long while.

He said: "You can't embrace Tim Tebow without embracing his faith ... if you are supporting him and the way he is playing, you have to support his Christianity and his faith".

Wow!! WTF?!?!

Really? I can only like Tim Tebow because he is a Christian?!? No, I like Tim Tebow because he brings some excitement to football. As a matter of fact, I actually prefer people are more private with their spirituality and religious beliefs. I think religion has become too commercialized and politicized to begin with. We don't need it publicized anymore. I am sure there are many people in the NFL that are just as spiritual as Tebow, but prefer to keep it to themselves.

But to sit there and say if you like Tim Tebow you have to like his faith too -- what a crock of s#%t, to be blunt. Horrible take.

The video can be found here: http://proxy.espn.go.com/espn/feature/index?page=firsttake

Yeah, I honestly find that statement to be insulting.

I am not a Christian, but I enjoy the hell out of watching Tim Tebow play.

I hate Cris Carter, but if he said that on First Take, it is likely that he was the smartest analyst on there today, considering he was probably going up against Skip Bayless (see: idiot) and probably someone else idiotic like Stephen A. Smith or Rob Parker.

Cris Carter cannot hide his disdain for Tebow even when someone is speaking about Tebow and Carter's mouth is shut. Now if Carter said that you can't help but admire some of the principles that Tebow embodies in his approach to football and life that's fine. However to say what he said just further demonstrates the fallacy of relying heavily on former NFL players to talk intelligently about the game. You just have to pick and choose with these guys when it comes to getting wisdom - when you boil it down, it's that way with everyone you encounter in life. If I want to learn about playing wide receiver, Carter is a good to great resource. If I want to learn about passion for the game, sure. On leadership I think I'll pass on him based on reading accounts of him try to take over more than one huddle when it might not have always been his place. And when it comes to Tebow, he needs to watch a tape of his own telecasts to see how angry he looks every time his name is mentioned. Rodney Harrison does the same thing.

That show (and to a certain extent the whole roster of espn talking heads) are pretty much a bunch of morons. So if you want to call Carter the smartest idiot in the room, I agree.

They say that in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king. But what if that one eye has astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia, cataracts, macular degeneration, pink eye, retinitis pigmentosa and abetalipoproteinemia?

ESPN has been tripping over itself getting the faith angle in EVERYTHING it does on Tebow.

They had a piece on Sports Center last night where they interviewed the lead singer of The Fray. They led in with these facts...

He is a Christian who was successful in his non-religious job.

He became more 'Christian' in his job (I guess they made Christian music) and got criticized for it.

He's from Denver.

:lmao:

BTW - I am an Evangelical Christian. Tebow and I would be very much comfortable with being close brothers in Christ more than likely. And I think he is totally sincere. A guy like Kurt Warner was more private about his faith, but in the Evangelical world, we usually like to follow the Christian athletes. However, I have had several conversations with Christians who are not sports fans asking me if Tebow is going overboard a bit. There are actually critics of his super-transparent faith even among the brethren, so to speak.

Does Carter believe that everyone that rooted for him smoked pot? Though to be honest, listening to him now makes me want to numb my brain.......

The exception is Jay Crawford, who I think does a good job of moderating it all objectively, especially considering the idiocy he is surrounded by.

Yes, much like the caretaker at a mental institution.

I am an atheist and I enjoy watching Tebow. Ridiculous statement. I guess it is designed to get Carter attention more than anything.

I saw an interesting tweet from Rick Reilly that said something to the effect of....

'If you can only like Tebow if you embrace his faith, does that mean you can only like Tiger Woods if you embrace Buddhism?"

I didn't see the clip of him saying it, but I feel like Carter is dumb enough where he said that but meant to say something more along the lines of "If you are supporting him, you are supporting his ability to express/demonstrate his faith however he chooses".

But then again, it's Cris Carter.

The whole faith card really has nothing to do with Tebow and his football abilities. Just a stupid comment by Carter. It reminds me of Steve Young and being Mormon. Who really cares Young was amazing as a player and his faith has nothing to do with that ability.

I dislike Hoge with a passion but there's nothing even close to the stupidity that comes out of Carter's mouth on a constant basis. He's the worst talking head in sports and there's nobody remotely close.

I dunno... don't Mormons wear super, spiritually enhanced underwear? Steve prob had those on vs Minnesota when he made that run.

Also an atheist and my take is this.....

Yes - his bible thumping is annoying. Yes - I think he's a brain washed fool who confuses believing in yourself with faith in bull crap fairy tales about Jesus as a "god" or "son of god". And - I think if he wants to help poor kids in South America (missionary work), he should do it without the Jesus-strings attached.

But....that said.....he's not hurting anyone and I'd rather him and his bible thumping be getting all this media love than a piece of garbage dog killer like Michael Vick.

In short.....

Bible Thumper > Dog Torturer

unlike Carter in his playing days, it's refreshing to see an athlete being such a good role model for the next generation.

the fact that he is a Christian and freely shares his faith makes it even sweeter.

those that don't want to listen to that, don't have to.

personally, I would rather listen to Tebow than Carter, or most of the talking heads on espn.

just because you like an athlete, it doesn't mean you have to like his religion.

I thought Tom Landry was great.

I hated Darrell Green.

both were very open about their faith.

Green and Joe Gibbs were just on the wrong team.

I'm not about to read this thread.

I just read the title.

Chris Carter is a jackass. He says stuff to get a rise out of people, because he feels that will ensure him success in his profession. He doesn't even believe much of the nonsense he spews, so why should I bother myself with it?

Carter said it from the first time he commented on Tebow. As a WR who liked to get his hands on the ball, he could never support a QB like Tebow.

He is just taking things too far now and letting his hands interfere with his head. Not saying its intellectual masturbation, but pretty close to it.

Same here12

Code:
1 - For now, while he's pulling off wins/competitive games2 - As long as he's not on my team (I see him being Doug Flutie 2.0)

See, I disagree with that. I think he really does believe most of what he says. Merril Hodge on the other hand is the type that I think intentionally stirs the pot.

I'm not a religious person but have no problem with Tebow's faith.

He doesn't really preach. All I've heard is he starts his post game talks with I'd like to thank my lord and savior jesus christ. And he does the kneeling praying thing during games. Am I missing anything? Sure we know in his private life he's very religious but that's not a bad thing.

My opinion is people should be allowed to think/believe whatever they want. As long as they aren't preaching hate (which I've never heard from Tebow), aren't telling everyone else they're going to hell for not believing (again never heard that from Tebow) and aren't doing bad things. Who cares?

There's a big difference between a 3 second thanks to jesus and starting press conferences with you will burn in hell if you don't follow my beliefs. That would be annoying.

I think you're just looking for something to be offended by if Tebow's actions bother you. Sure the media plays everything he does up so that can be annoying, but that's not Tebow's fault.

:goodposting: You can tell by the way Carter talks it's not calculated. He's just genuinely that dumb. Which makes him 10 times more tolerable than Hoge. Not a single word comes out of his mouth that isn't scripted.

Faith is fine, but religion sucks. Tebow is a good football player. Doesn't need to get any more complicated than that, IMO

He autographed my football, "God Bless, Kurt Warner," some years back. In my head I was like, "Woahhh, easy tiger." Now that I look back, it wasn't that big of a deal. Tebow probably would've dipped my football in holy water, circumcised it and prayed with me before signing the darn thing.Cris Carter >>>> Michael Iriving and Warren Sapp (which isn't saying much).

Yeah that's nothing. "God Bless" is more or less "Best Wishes" considering who it came from. Not to be confused with "bless your soul"...

and can someone do something about his big metrosexual eyebrows?

also if you dont like tebow now you never will, goes to show you who the selfish players are who dislike tebow. tebow gets wins, if your a true team player you would love having tebow on your team as he will get you wins. fact. if you want stats for your selfish reason you would dislike tebow. hence cris carter.

If so, he's an idiot. Either way, just not worth engaging.

It was a silly thing to say.I've had this talk with some friends recently about Tebow. Does Tebow really say as much as we think he does or does that aspect of his persona get a disproportionate amount of media attention because of the controversy it generates? What I mean by that is: do we have a perception of Tebow trying to shove his religion down everyone's throats when all he does is make no apologies for it and live it openly?

Now, as a Christian, I don't take issue with Tebow's behavior. I don't think it's something to be ashamed of and in fact, as Christians, we are supposed to "spread the word". I'd say that scripture supports the idea that one's belief in Jesus and faith in God should result in behavior and attitude that is plainly visible to the public. While there is certainly an issue of method and timing that comes into play, the idea that someone could be a "closet" Christian in a society as open as ours would seem to indicate a failure on the part of the Christian rather than a success.

Why would that bother you?If they are correct, then you need to hear it. And if they aren't, then they are words of nonsense and they can disregarded as such.

The weight of some other mortal's prediction concerning where I ultimately end up is inconsequential.

A Chris Cater is an Idiot

B I am semi religious and have no problem with Tebow and his openess with religion.

C I must be the only one who thinks Tebow pretty much sucks as a QB and dont have the patience to watch the whole game till he finally does something right while the defense plays their asses off the whole game to keep the team in the game only to see the blind squirrel find the nut and become the hero.

Amen
