Cuban Cigars (1 Viewer)

OK,

So things are opening up for Cuba

fast forward a bit and one would think Cuban cigars will be much more readily available. IF that is the case, how desireable are they? How much of why American cigar folks want Cuban cigars is because they are the best damn cigars in the world, and how much is because they are hard to acquire, rare, forbidden, whatever?

not a real cigar guy, so i have no idea. I kind of assume a large part of the appeal is that any college frat boy cannot just walk into the smoke-n-stop and pick up a case, bnut maybe they are THAT good

I'm sure I'll get lambasted for this, but unless the price comes down appreciably, they definitely aren't that much of an upgrade for the price.

A big portion of it is "OMG....we can't get it so it's definitely better!". However, I did have a few when I was in Mexico (I don't think they were fakes) and they were great. There are great cigars and great tobacco coming out of DR, Nicaragua, etc. Better values, imo.

I smoked a Cuban once after an expensive steak dinner. The broker who provided them to us was from New York and was dropping a ton of money on the night. I was excited to try one, but am not a cigar smoker by any means. I smoke maybe 1-2 a year and never really get it. But I smoked the whole damn thing that night and couldn't taste anything for a few days after. It wrecked my mouth, like going down on a Tijuana hooker. Strong. Very powerful. It wasn't the most enjoyable experience.

I believe it is the cachet of acquiring the forbidden. I remember when Coors was only available west of the Mississippi. People out east of the Big Muddy actually made efforts to bring the swill back home when they had been out west visiting. Once it became widely available people wondered what the fuss was all about.

To fully understand your analogy I need more background on the extent and nature of your experiences with Tijuana hookers.

Do your final three sentences refer to the cigar or the hooker?

good point!

I quit smoking back in 1988. As much as I would like to try a Cuban, I'm afraid it would set up the whole nicotine craving again.... so when I go overseas, i buy them to give away to impress other people. If they're readily available in the US, I won't bother.

I'd assume the price would come down, not sure how much
I believe there are a number of reasons the price won't come down much:

- the market won't open for export of cigars;

- the amount of goods which people can take out of Cuba is limited (I believe $100) and therefore, you won't see a mass exodus of cubans (cigars);

- while the number of people going to Cuba will increase, there are still restrictions on who can travel to Cuba which will limit that increase;

- the cigar growers have an interest in keeping the price up (mystique/return).

I smoke about 30-50 a year. I have a Cuban connection from my company and have gotten a few boxes ($225-$275 range) for customers.

They always give me 1 or 2. They do seem better but I know very little about cigars and mainly stick to store brand knock offs that I am happy with.

real Cubans are generally too expensive compared to other quality smokes from DR and Nicaragua. I've had real good ones and meh ones.. Best cigar I've ever smoked was a non -Cuban- it was a Davidoff that a friend gave me

I wonder if it's $100 worth of cigars over there, or $100 worth of Cuban cigars here?

$100 won't even get you a box.

I used to travel overseas alot and brought back boxes a few times. Tried a range from Montecristo's and Cohiba's to bargain brands. They were smooth and smoked for what seemed like forever. Not cheap though, and from a value perspective it's all show, much better value with DR/Nicaraguan cigars.

How much did the Tijuana hooker broker charge you to go down on her?

I order from cigarone.com on occasion. Would love if the prices came down. Partagas Series D no 4 is my jam.

Last time I ordered the box got pinched coming in through NY. Got a nasty letter in the mail. Contacted the shipper and he re-shipped but removed all labels and in a different box. Would be great to get past this dumb hassle.

Some of the best cigars I've ever had have been cuban cigars along a side of cuban rum or a good scotch while in hotel bars in Tokyo. I've chain smoked cigars in those places. I keep telling myself the dominican cigars are just as good, and maybe I'm just drinking the kool aid, but the cubans just seemed a step above.

I'm not a cigar snob either, just a guy who really enjoys smoking a cigar, any cigar, here and there.

Yeah, this. I keep telling myself I'm just missing on the really good non-cubans or something, but when I get the goods, its just better imo.

:goodposting:

Non-counterfeit Cubans are just a little better. Not a ton better, mind you (some fine sticks coming out of DR and such), but definitely a level above.

If you want to order real Cubans now, try www.bellhopcigars.com

I am not affiliated in any way other than I am a client.
I spot checked my two favorites where I get them vs this place and a box of montecristo #2 is $359 here, but $255 at my place. Cohiba robustos are $529 vs $371. Save about 30%.

Puro express dot com

I'm also just a customer of theirs, but have been very pleased.

There are crappy Cubans just like there are crappy Dominicans. The top Cubans are amazing - Cohiba, Partagas, Montecristo, and a few others

Prices in Cuba for tourists are very much on an international level. Big black market though, but a lot a fakes around

Ooh, nice prices.

I forgot I had a box here in my desk to give to a client on WED.

Any easy way to check on authenticity? It's wrapped in a white thin what looks like parchment paper so I can kinda see through. I can look at them when he opens the box. I assume they are real but just curious as the price seemed cheap and the guy has stated he makes no money from selling them.

They are Cohiba Siglio V

I'd assume the price would come down, not sure how much
Because that's what usually happens when demand demand goes up?
because that's what usually happens when something goes from the black market to legit
Until demand brings the prices right back up again!

As long as you're convinced that your site is shipping you legit Cubans. Are they an authorized Habanos dealer?

I have wondered if this still worked from time to time. Wish I would have known you knew it did, and I'm pretty sure that's the cigar Scupper ordered when we split a box.

Agree on the last part.

just got 1 of these and a 2013 limited edition romeo juliette cuban for a friend while I was in the caribbean. are they decent? was going on the advice of the store owner. friend enjoys a mild smoke. also, these things will have been out of a humidor for about a week. did I ruin them? didn't know anything about this until I was talking to a guy at work....

Dominican cigars are just as good and not as expensive. A lot of the Cuban cigar masters went to DR; it took years to cultivate the soil but the flavor is there now.
