Culpepper wants release if Vikings can't trade him

BY SEAN JENSEN

Pioneer Press

Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper has confirmed that the team has tried to trade him and requested the organization release him if it can't find a partner.

"Now that I have confirmed that the Vikings have been seeking to trade me, I have asked for permission to speak to the interested teams. The Vikings have denied my request," Culpepper said in a statement e-mailed to the Pioneer Press on Wednesday. "If a trade does not happen, then I am asking the Vikings to terminate my contract as soon as possible."

Culpepper said that he appreciated Vikings owner Zygi Wilf saying that he would pay his $6 million bonus. "However, because of the fundamental differences I have with management regarding the approach to my personal and professional life, I think it is the best business decision for both parties to go our separate ways," Culpepper said.

"If the team chooses not to honor my request, then I intend to fulfill my contractual obligations to the Minnesota Vikings."

The primary issue remains money. In May 2003, Culpepper signed a 10-year, $102 million contract that was technically one of the five-largest in NFL history. But Culpepper's deal was loaded with non-guaranteed salaries and special-teams incentives he would never earn.

Wilf gave Culpepper a $4 million signing bonus last August and another $3.5 million due 14 days after the start of this league year. Coupled with a $2.5 million bonus he was scheduled to get as part of his original deal, Culpepper was set to receive $6 million on March 22.

The Vikings have been trying to find a trade partner. But teams have been reluctant, believing the Vikings might outright release him before that bonus is due and fearing the severity of Culpepper's injury. Culpepper damaged three of four ligaments in his right knee against the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 30, and he missed the remainder of the season.

As a CPep owner, I really would like to see him leave town, but still think it would be stupid for the team to trade or release him.

Still, the thoughts of him reuniting with Green or Moss, or signing in Miami are very interesting indeed.

It seems like Brees is the favorite to go to Miami. I wonder if the Vikings could get Brees if Culpepper does get traded to Miami...

That might actually work out best for everyone involved.

I don't. The "team leader" has been anything but since the injury. He's worn out his welcome and I'll be glad to see him go.

That's what I'm going to be rooting for. Like Andy just mentioned, Culpepper doesn't want to play here so I think he should go. Brees would be able to replicate what Brad Johnson did last year that made the team successful. Except Brees is younger and better.

I see no problem with this statement. I'm sure his pride/feeling are hurt by the trade rumors and he did say he'll honor his contract should the Vikings fail to honor his wishes.

It will be interesting to see where Daunte ends up.

I'm a big Brad Johnson fan so it would be nice to see him get another year or two in as a starter. Not sure how Vikings fans would feel about that, but he played reasonably well when he started and won games.

hey Cpep, you want release or trade ... how 'bout the bench.

seriously, who would want this guy?? one of the biggest playmakers in the league leaves and Cpep can't do squat. there have been rumors abound that he's as dumb as a log, which is the reason why he went to UCF in the first place.

the cap hit to the Vikes would be tremendous as well.

and then you've got him representing himself. what kind of fool does that?? or did i miss the fact that Cpep aced his contracts course at the community college?

????

 So when does the agent who talked Culpepper into this deal start complaining how he got bamboozeled by the crafty owners and their non-guaranteed monies?

At which point, I would like to ask the agent, "Do you expect me to believe you did not use the perception of getting Culpepper the fifth highest contract ever to recruit new clients?"

:lmao:

He thinks he's gonna get a huge payday in the FA market. What an idiot. Let someone else sign this rock. :hophead:

Agreed.

Vikings need to have Brees on Super duper Speed Dial WHENVER free agency actually starts and if he gets released.

They can not seriously expect to go into next season with Brad Johnson as the starter with a rookie and/or 3rd level talent backing him up. He will not last the whole season as a strater due to injuries.

Since Brees is coming off Surgery, set Brad as starter while Brees learns the ropes and heals up and set Oct. as his starting day.

Kurt F'n Warner got 6 or 7 million per year after a season in which he accumulated 2 wins and yet another injury to add to his history... Someone will pay 'Pepper a lot of money.

:goodposting: not to mention he looked puzzled without Randy Moss, and his stats reflected this: 12 int's, 31 sacks and a 72 passer rating..all within 7 games...

 Good point.

What's wrong Skipper, mad that the state Minnesota is trying to slap you and Giligan on the wrist for the lap dances from Ginger and Mary Ann?

I think the Vikes should hold on to him, but here's a what if - why not do a trade with Oakland that includes their first round pick - surely they would be getting first round value (more IMO!) for a second year in a row - and then select one of the top QBs (I have seen mocks that have Oak getting Young) in the draft. Start BJohnson, and bring the young guy along - if BJ gets hurt, then he gets put in early, if not, then he gets a year of learning and can start the following season.

Problem is, the Vikes obviously aren't going to "terminate his contract" as he's requested and get nothing back for a guy they viewed as the franchise cornerstone on offense [and gave him a contract commensurate with that viewpoint].

His injury complicates things. Were he healthy, any number of teams would be willing to give up [a lot at that] for his services; but without any way to confirm whether he'll be back to 100% ever, much less by the start of the regular season, how can any franchise really pay the asking price?

Dont fool yourself guys , without Moss ( plus the knee injury )

Culpepper becomes a below average QB , no one wants to give too much then take that big of a chance.

I dont think he played one good game last year ( maybe one if i remember )

Yeah, I sure know I'd want a QB who sucked (badly) after his stud WR left and gimped out of the season with a serious kinda injury that's been known to end more than a few careers. The trainwreck just keeps on rollin'

Of how many QB's?

Dumb and Dumber

starring Daunte Cullpepper (Lloyd) and Vince Young (Harry)

Only way I think they will release him is if they sign Brees first. Refusing to allow Culpepper to talk to the teams who inquired about him just adds to the evidence they dont intend to let him walk away.

My heart is breaking for this guy. The Vikings are treating him like crap.

any idea where he would want to go?...Oakland and Baltimore come to mind; maybe the Jets...
Detroit - He'd get to rub it in Minny's face twice a year and they need a QB even though the ego maniac Martz thinks Joey can be the guy.

I said someone would pay him. I didn't say it would necessarily be a good idea.

This may be true, but the nitwit who is willing to sign Culpepper already wasted $6 - 7 mil on Warner.

I agree. He has done nothing but proudly representthis organization at every sex party hosted in the state of Minnesota and yet he still gets no respect. :P

Send him to the Browns.
I like this idea. Send him somewhere he'll never pose a threat to the rest of the league of being on a contender. He’ll still be a good fantasy player and they’ll always finish 6-10. Win, win, win...all around. :banned:

Fair enough, and Braylon Edwards can try to be the next Moss. He'll probably fail, but he'd be much more likely than most.

I'm just not seeing the Browns doing this with Frye in the fold.

Jets should take a long look.

9/25: 21/29 300 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT10/23: 23/31 280 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INT

Two good games where he just "torched" New Orleans and Green Bay. ;)

I don't think the Jets should be in the market for Brees or Culepper. Sorry, but they decided to take their injured-QB gamble on the Chad, and now they need to sign a vet who is ready to play now, and a rookie who could be the future.

That's the rumor, makes some sense I suppose, but wouldn't they prefer CPep?

Cpep fired his agent back in January, he now "represents" himself (if you could call it that). When everyone is questioning your ability to run the WCO doing something this dumb doesn't really help your cause.

Cpep will be a LOT more expensive, and the Jets really need a QB that can play NOW with Pennington on the shelf. To me, the Jets and CPep make no sense unless they're comfortable having two injured QBs and going with their 3rd stringer to start the season.

Well, maybe they want another top pick. ;)
