Culpepper with Class (1 Viewer)

Culpepper must have kicked -ballers puppy in a past life.In an organization that has spent much of its existance as a trainwreck, this type of professionalism has to be a breath of fresh air. I don't understand the jaded views from some posters here that there is anything behind this other than insuring a smooth transition and maintaining a team first attitude in the locker room.
Actually the Lions have always paid their player well..they just never had many good players to pay.

I don't disagree with that one bit...

I have long contended that an NFL backup QB is one of the best gigs in the world.
Especially in DET. Pep gets to make a decent living without having to worry about putting his health in the hands of the DET O-Line.DET opens up with 5 tough defenses. I think Pep has a very good chance of playing before the bye, whether by injury or rookie performance.

And if you are getting paid starters money it is even a better gig. :pickle:

Hmmm...when 'Pepper was searching for a payday early last season, he informed the Steelers that he was fighting for a starting gig. Fast forward to the present, he's slated to make $5mm+ as a backup and now he's in "full support of the Lions decision". Ironic.
hey man, you can say what you want about the other facts, but I think it's nice to see a player handle a situation like this with class for once.I give him full marks for that, regardless of whether he rides the pine the rest of his life. This is a QB whose character was questioned when he was leaving Minnesota and who has taken a lot of flak for whatever reasons. Give the guy a break and be happy that he's not being a crybaby like some other professionals in the NFL. (hello Brandon Marshall, Jay Cutler)

It's the right thing to do, it just comes off as insincere when it's obviously a letter drafted by his publicist.

1st of all, how are you sure he didn't it write it himself? I know you seem to "know" this, but you don't. 2nd of all, what's wrong if the guy can't write something like that on his own and asks his publicist to release a statement saying he supports the team? How is that insincere? That's why these guys hire publicists in the first place. And, let's "assume the worst". Let's assume this wasn't Daunte's idea at all but came directly from his publicist and/or the Lions. I highly doubt that, but even if that were the case, Daunte still said "sure, make it happen". There are LOTS of players that wouldn't. Given the fact that most backup QBs don't make these statements, I seriously doubt it came from Daunte's publicist as he has little to nothing to gain from it. What gives?

he could've shut up and just done his job.
...and yet you rip him for doing just that:
ALLEN PARK -- After the Detroit Lions' starting quarterback job was given to Matthew Stafford on Monday, Daunte Culpepper refused to talk to the media. There has been speculation about how Culpepper might react, whether he'd accept the No. 2 spot or ask to be traded.

Culpepper made his feelings known Tuesday when he prepared a statement he asked the team's public relations department to release.

:hifive: :lmao:

when the media asks for a comment that's your big chance to give the smiley team first thumbs up.

the world doesn't need a pr statement released from every player in the nfl.
Pick a lane. First you rip him for making the statement, then you rip him for not making one.

I realize it's difficult to assume any professional athlete does things without an alterior motive or is actually being sincere, but in this case, I think C-Pep is being honest.

It's obviously a PR piece, because it's written in PR-speak. For example: "My position is that if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best." That's not at all the way a football player would phrase it; have you ever heard Culpepper say "My position is that..."? It's a PR qualifier. It's like "I deeply regret if my actions caused anyone to be offended"; it's a scripted response that's fundamentally insincere. Do you really think Culpepper was excited when Stafford was chosen in the draft? Do you really think he isn't at all disappointed to not be starting?

People would rip him if he said he wasn't content, that the wrong choice was made, that he didn't support the decision or the coaches or Stafford. Some of those people will also rip him for saying what he said in his press release. It's a growing sport --- Denounce The Athlete.

This.
