Culpepper's progress impresses Dolphins

Associated Press

6/9/2006

DAVIE, Fla. - Daunte Culpepper did what everyone wanted to see.

The new Dolphins quarterback, in his first public workout since joining the Miami Dolphins, dropped back during a morning minicamp session Friday and saw no one open.

So he took off running — looking every bit like his former self.

Culpepper, who had surgery in November to repair three torn ligaments in his right knee, sprinted down the field during a non-contact drill against players not wearing pads. He also ran back to the huddle and showed no signs of being limited  at all despite wearing a knee brace.

Culpepper did not speak with reporters Friday, but his teammates are impressed with his progress.

“Pleasantly surprised and inspired,” defensive lineman Kevin Carter. “I’m glad he’s feeling a lot better, especially with the severity of the injury that he had. I mean, it’s only June and he’s running around pretty good. So it’s a pretty good indication that hell be ready to go full-speed come season time.”

Culpepper, who was acquired in a trade from the Minnesota Vikings, has been taking part in all practices during the team’s offseason program, which began in May.

Dolphins coach Nick Saban said Culpepper is ahead of schedule, but won’t say with any measure of certainty if the quarterback will be ready for the season opener Sept. 7 at Pittsburgh.

But Saban also hasn’t ruled out Culpepper playing in the exhibition opener at home against Jacksonville on Aug. 12, either.

“He’s doing very well physically,” Saban said. “But I’m not surprised because I see him every day. Does he still have work to do? Absolutely. Are we ready to make any predictions about his future? Not really, because that’s all day-to-day and week-to-week and hopefully he’ll continue to make the kind of progress that he’s made.”

Culpepper appeared to be throwing the ball well, connecting on two passes downfield to receivers Marty Booker and Wes Welker. Dropping back and planting on his surgically rebuilt knee did not seem to be problematic.

Receiver Chris Chambers was happy to see Culpepper move so well.

“I’d rather him go out here and react the way he has to react and not think about if he’s going to get hurt if he runs down the field,” Chambers said. “I’ve seen him do it numerous times already in camp so it’s nothing I think about. Myself and all the other guys are salivating on the opportunity to get some of those broken-down plays and get a lot of big plays that way with a guy who’s mobile.”

The Dolphins’ other new quarterback, Joey Harrington, also participated in the minicamp, giving fans — who are allowed to watch at this time of year — their first look at the former Detroit Lions starter.

Saban said Harrington has “been a real asset” and defended the decision to trade a sixth-round pick in 2007 to Detroit even though the Lions were planning to release Harrington for salary-cap purposes.

“We thought the practice time was important, but we also thought that there was no guarantee that if they cut the guy that we’d get him,” Saban said. “So we secure the future and we also get the guy here to practice. I think it certainly enhances the developmental process, especially in our situation where there is some question as to who will be the quarterback, whether it’s because of physical injuries and things like that.”

Still cant deny he is WAY ahead of schedule and could be back in the saddle by ATLEAST week 3-4. I think he is being underrated because so many fantasy footballers were burned by him last year. JMHO.

Has he lost weight?
I did see on NFL networks total access he lost 9 pounds from his normal playing weight. I see that as good news, it's not like he's been inactive and getting chubby.
Thanks. Those photos make him look skinnier than I remember. Probably a good thing for his knees.

I agree he looks like he has taken off weight. On December 18 the Star/Trib reported that he'd taken off 25 pounds at that point. Here's an excerpt:Dec 18

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports Minnesota Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper brought up the possibility of playing somewhere else for the 2006 season during an off-camera interview with ESPN. Culpepper said, "I want to play where I'm wanted. Whatever team gets me next year, the team where I'm wanted, they'll get a bigger, better, faster Daunte Culpepper." Culpepper also said he's lost 25 pounds from his previous 265-pound frame in an effort to reduce stress on his knee.

This maybe fluff, but still I'm hoping the best for Cpep. I think with his old OC back he could be in for a nice year. So could the Fins.

Not unless the Dolphins trade him to St. Louis, where Linehan now coaches. But I do agree it would be great to see Culpepper bounce back. Confidence is all he lacks, and I do feel he'll get it back with the Dolphin coaching staff.

Doesn't really matter. Mularkey is no slouch compared to Linehan. Any offensive coordinator is a tremendous leap forward from Steve Loney. Loney was a nice enough guy, but he'd never been an OC and was escallated from OL coach simply because Cheapo McCombs didn't want to pay for a real OC. And with another former OL coach as head coach? The players end up paying for decisions like that. Culpepper has always performed under good coaching, and I have a hunch he will for the next 7 or so years.

I be more worried about how many INT's and fumbles he ends up with this year then the knee. I wish him the best, but after watching him play in Minny without Moss, I don't know.

I agree, it was ugly.... very ugly w/o Moss. I think that Minn simply tried to put too much on the guy though. MM and Saban will not do this in any way shape or form. Tehy will want to establish the run 1st and foremost and go from there. I think Cpep can still be a very good NFL QB. I was probably one of the most vocal guys who was down on Cpep last year. Well me and jvwd..... whatever. Still, I agree that in a controled environment where the system lets plays come to him rather than him force plays, he can be very good. We'll see.

I agree, and I see Marty Booker having a very good year. Everyone is talking about Chris Chambers who has been able to produce despite a QB that could barely get the Wide Receivers the ball, but I think Booker is being highly underrated. He has been an above average Receiver for his whole career despite playing in very bad offenses, with very bad QBs. I think Culpepper will be able to get him the ball as Booker will be seeing a lot of single coverage, which was not always the case when he was with the Bears.

I saw some clips of C-Pepp from his practice this week on Sportscenter, and he looked good. Real good. And its only June.

Call me crazy, but I think he may come back a lot sooner than people predicted.

And if that's the case, the Patriots better start watching their backs a little sooner than they anticipated probably... :D

Watching NFL Total Access twice last night and once again this morning, what I saw was Daunte still struggling with mobility. They had two shots of him running - one sprinting on to the practice field, and one where he hands off and rolls the other way and starts off downfield. In both shots he's clearly favoring the leg, he's practically limping. Now he appeared to be making the throws ok, but we all know what makes Culpepper a fantasy star, and that's his legs.

With 3 months left until the season, there's still plenty of news to come here - I just wanted to point out what I saw and bring a point of view to those who maybe didn't see the footage.

i wouldn't say his legs are his only asset. He probably has one of the biggest guns in the NFL. half the reason why he was so effective with Moss was he could hurl the ball 60 yards downfield with great velocity. Safeties are really going to have to watch out with he and Chambers together. Chambers is a freakish like athelete. He's not 6-4 like Moss but he has incriedible leaping skills and the wheels to get deep. Culepper dynasty owner here. :bye: Just hoping the knee returns to health. However, I think he could still be an effective pocket type QB. Maybe not All Pro but I think he'd still be better than a lot of the bums out there. For instance, how about the guy playing behind him?
