Cuomo and de Blasio (1 Viewer)

What the hell is going on out in NY? These two either have terrible ways of communicating their thoughts or they are disgusting human beings.

At his daily coronavirus briefing, Cuomo was discussing the homeless people in the subways and brandishing a copy of the New York Daily News that showed pictures of the homeless, then stated, “That is disgusting, what is happening on those subway cars. It’s disrespectful to the essential workers who need to ride the subway system,” as The Gothamist reported.

Mayor Bill de Blasio

@NYCMayor

My message to the Jewish community, and all communities, is this simple: the time for warnings has passed. I have instructed the NYPD to proceed immediately to summons or even arrest those who gather in large groups. This is about stopping this disease and saving lives. Period.

Mayor de Blasio on his tweet singling out the Jewish community for large gatherings: “If in my passion and in my emotion I said something that was hurtful, I'm sorry" but he has "no regrets calling out this danger" and says the city will "deal with it very, very aggressively”

These two have done a uniquely terrible job compared to the rest of the country.
Yeah, because there's no reason in the world the results should be worse in NYC than in Boise.

That’s not what this thread is about. That said, Cuomo is being praised as some kind of hero in the face of tragedy. The reality is, he resisted shutting New York down just like many other people did that are getting criticized.

I think he is being praised for responding in a calm, measured tone while leaning on the experts and scientists around him.  He is also disclosing a ton of information and has done everything in his power to get this crisis in hand.

Compare that to you know who...

No question Cuomo waited way too long to shut down. People (including me, since my company was also flying blind) were commuting into Manhattan on March 16th.  It was like 10% of normal (if that) but I still think a lot of damage was caused.

Obviously Diblasio's comments come off really bad, but the orthodox Jewish community has been particularly bad in terms of large gatherings. Tons of examples down in Lakewood, NJ as well.

I don't know, I'm a realist and I think calling people out needs to be done from time to time

For me, he certainly could have shut down earlier for sure but he's recovered.  We all make mistakes and he has done a good job of trying to catch up to it.

Haven't followed this latest Cuomo story, but I would say that he screwed up some things at the beginning, and the reason he's gotten such good press lately is because of his press conferences, in particular the way they've been contrasted with Trump.

As for DeBlasio, he's done a lot of terrible things during this pandemic and nobody likes the guy (myself included), but the way he's getting pilloried for this tweet is somewhat unfair. The irony is that if he had just threaded his tweets he wouldn't have kicked up nearly as much outrage. Instead he posted three of them sequentially. The second one, which appeared to be blaming "the Jewish community", went viral and drew accusations of anti-Semitism. But if you read all three tweets in succession it's clear he was talking about the Jewish community of Williamsburg that gathered in a large group for a funeral. They absolutely deserved to be called out for that; those are the kind of "superspreader" events that can prolong an outbreak and get a lot of people killed.

Cuomo:

“Where was the intelligence community, with the briefings?” he continued. “Saying this is in China and they have something called an airplane and you can get on an airplane and you can come to the United States?”

The governor saved room in his crosshairs for the media, alleging that they didn’t do enough to sound the alarm that China’s problem could soon become America’s.

“Where were all the experts? Where was the New York Times? Where was the Wall Street Journal?” he asked. “Where was all the bugle blowers who should say, ‘Be careful, there’s a virus in China that may be in the United States.’

“Who was supposed to blow the bugle and didn’t?”

But Cuomo did exempt one group from a share of the accountability.

“Governors don’t do global pandemics, right?” he said. “It’s not a state responsibility.”

After forcing nursing homes to take in COVID-19 patients in March and only stopping it in May, Gov. Andrew Cuomo states: "We now have a top priority, which we had from day one, which is our nursing homes."

I caught a couple minutes of Coumo's presser today because I left the TV on. I hadn't seen one up until this point, but I was not impressed at all.

People actually wanted him to replace gropey joe?

No criticism ever from the media and no push back to this. He’s easily been the governor who has been the biggest failure in the country.
