Curtis Painter era OVER (1 Viewer)

Updating a previous item, coach Jim Caldwell has named Dan Orlovsky the Colts' starting quarterback for Week 13 against the Patriots.

Caldwell changed his mind -- or, more likely, had it changed for him -- after suggesting Monday that Curtis Painter would remain the starter. On the same day that DC Larry Coyer was fired, the Colts are doing quite a bit of house-cleaning. Orlovsky has plenty of experience at the helm of a winless team from his stint with the Lions in 2008. Even with Painter's nine turnovers to one touchdown over the past five games, Orlovsky isn't much of an upgrade.

ETA: for def/st matchups, does this affect anything that much? Also is there any upgrade to the wr/te?

why do this now? they are so close
The only teams they could likely "catch' are the Phins (playing too well), Vikes or STL and those teams have a two game lead on them at a minimum. This is called CYA and they are playing it beautifully. You honestly think Orlovsky (or even Peyton) would beat the Pats this week?

BTW, I will add that this just shows how negligent management was over the course of the Manning era in grooming a backup (let alone a replacement). When you look at the guys who played behind Favre (Brunell, pederson, Brooks, Hasselbeck and Rodgers), that is an organization who understood the necessity of identifying a proper backup in a QB driven league, regardless of the fact the guy was literally unbreakable. Shame on the Colts for thinking they could live with the Sorgis and Painters of the world, when they knew how much a difference maker Peyton was...we all did, why did they not?

IDK why they keep Peyton around anymore. There's about a month left in the season. And they "hope" he practices in December. Well December is 2 days from now. The mechanics to get into football shape coming off neck surgery seem like a lot to risk for no immediate reward. Kind of like spring football practice or a 6-6 eary December college bowl game. What's the point of it? Why kill a roster spot all year for Manning?

So that it seems like they'll play him if he's able. Which everyone knows he won't be. But it makes it seem like they aren't blatantly tanking.

Well, maybe they were like many fantasy owners (including yours truly :bag: ) and figured that since Peyton had never been injured or missed any games (due to his style of play) that there wasn't a need to roster a proper backup. Favre didn't miss any games either with the Packers, but he seemed to expose himself to a greater risk of injury, hence the need for a capable backup.

In the salary cap era, teams have to decide how much they want to spend on the backup QB position as opposed to other needs. It's easy to say the Colts should have a better backup, but the fact is there are very few good backup QBs and they aren't cheap. On average, a decent backup would cost 2-3M a season. A "good" backup like a Derek Anderson or David Carr type would make even more. It's an expensive insurance policy, especially considering there aren't even 32 good starting QBs. And there are probably only around 15 backup QBs that have more than 10 career starts in actual NFL games. The rest are inexperienced scrubs like Painter. So you are basically paying a lot of money for an average player at best unless you get lucky like the Eagles did with Vick. Some teams like the Colts determine that's its just not worth it and invest the money in other positions knowing full well that if the starter goes down, the season is lost.

They reason why they keep Peyton around is because they desperately want to go into the off season with some answers. Is he making any progress in his recovery? Are his nerves regenerating? Is there any hope for next season?Whether or not he is able to practice with the team this December and throw the ball, it will no doubt effect how the Colts move forward this off season.

:goodposting: Think of all the money they freed up to use on other players over the past several years. This is the first time having a good back-up would have helped, and it wouldn't have mattered much. Even with an above average back-up QB, this Colts team wouldn't have won many games, Peyton is that important.

If the Colts lose the next 5 Orlovsky has firmly placed himself in sports trivia for years to come.
This is true. 15 years from now "What QB started games for both the Lions and the Colts during their historical 0-16 seasons?" will be a fantastic trivia question.

I guess Painter got a little too close to winning Sunday's game, so he got replaced.
That was my thinking as well... expect donald brown to be benched in favor of addai as well...

Peyton is due a $28 million roster bonus or something along those lines this off season. Any extra info they can get regarding his condition before making that commitment is worth way more than fielding a more competitive 1-15(ceiling) team.

New England is giving up over 300 yards per game passing. Someone has to have a decent day out of this - and with recent injuries to borderline starters, the Indy WR who actually produces could make or break the playoff hopes of fantasy teams.

I have absolutely no insight into the Indy WR position. Any homers know if Orlovsky has a special relationship with anyone in the corps?

Orlovsky was terrible in preseason. He looked like he had never even seen a football before. There's a reason they originally dumped him and kept Painter around.

My guess is Orlovsky doesn't make it to the second half.
