Broncos | Cutler struggling; not pressing Plummer

Published Thu Jul 6 7:39:00 p.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) ESPN reports Denver Broncos rookie QB Jay Cutler is struggling with the team's offense. He does not appear close to challenging QB Jake Plummer for the No. 1 quarterback spot.

Theres a surprise. A rookie QB not picking up the WC offense after 3 months?

If the writer of that article thought Culter would be a challenge to Plummer this year, well...

The writer might not think Cutler could challenge Plummer this year, but many around here do. It is the typical thing after the draft for MANY to overvalue the rookie QBs/WRs.I only posted this for the ones that are/were considering taking Cutler in a redraft. The veterans have been through this each year for many years.

I know, my comment was directed at the writer, not you.

It is ironic to me to hear all of the glowing reports on the rookies out of the camps, and this negative one on Cutler.

Did anyone think he'd press Plummer for the #1 job this year?

J
No. But I do feel he's a legitimate replacemate 2-3 years down the line.
Oh I think so too, FM. But not this year. I don't know anyone who thought Plummer was threatened by Cutler for this year.J

Cutler hasn't looked that bad. This is a complex system, and it will take some time. Shanahan's exact quote from draft day is that he brought in JC to "push and compete with Plummer." We all know that JC's day will come (in '07). Can't wait for training camp!

Depends on what happens this year. Plummer plays like last year, and Culter's year might be '08(or '09).

Not very high on Plummer personally. We shall see what happens but there's no way they make him wait past '07, at the very latest. :2cents:

Funny, if you listened to those toolboxes on NFL Live today, they made it sound like Plummer was on the hot seat. Jerkys.

There was also a report on SC tonight that Cutler was not picking up the offense and many around Denver that expected him to challenge Plummer were realizing they were way off.

Didn't see the article but I wonder if the way people get so excited over draft picks, if that was an essential point for that writer to get off his chest. Know what I mean? Now he can follow the Broncos all summer and ignore any QB controversy BS having stated that already

Possibly. But do you think, if Culter had performed extremely well, that the writer would say, "but he still does not look as if he will challenge Plummer for the starting QB job?"

Should have been here on the board during draft day Joe.
I was here, for parts of it, and have no clue what you are talking about. I can't recall anyone saying Cutler would put Plummer on the bench at all. At best, a few might have said if Plummer was having an awful year, Cutler could get some snaps, but I sure don't remember any of what you are talking about.

Broncos | Van Pelt impressing Shanahan

Thu, 6 Jul 2006 19:46:31 -0700

Kyle Sonneman, of DenverBroncos.com, reports Denver Broncos QB Bradlee Van Pelt has been having a very good offseason and is having some of his best practices of his career according to head coach Mike Shanahan, "He's been throwing very well. In fact, today is one of the best days he's had since he's been here." Van Pelt has been number two on the depth chart since the beginning of last season but is proving to be a worthy challenger to starting QB Jake Plummer.

The "writer" may be Sal Pal. Note KFFL is quoting ESPN. THere may have been a written story, but I saw a piece on NFL Live yesterday that may have been the source. Sal P.'s source on how bad Cutler is adjusting was withinthe Broncos -- a coach, I think....but don't quote me -- I was trying to watch the Lieberman-Lamont debate at the same time.

Here is a piece to mix it up. If I were a Cutler owner I would not worry about ANY of these reports in July. Just sit back and wait to 2007.

Broncos | Cutler receives praise from Shanahan

Fri, 7 Jul 2006 05:44:29 -0700

Adrian Dater, of the Denver Post, reports Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan was impressed by rookie QB Jay Cutler at the first day of team workouts. "He's very talented," said Shanahan. "There's a learning curve at the quarterback position, but we'll let the process take care of itself with him."

Did anyone think he'd press Plummer for the #1 job this year?

J
If the Broncos began to struggle because of Plummer, I could see them making a late season switch when they are out of the playoff race.Of course, I suspect them to grab at least a six seed, and I don't see much competition from SD/OAK this year.

In all honesty, I don't see KC challenging either. I have ZERO faith in Herm Edwards after watching and his dismal clock management in NY.

I figured Cutler would follow the Rivers model and start in his third year, seeing spot duty in his second. I do think he will be a great QB for the long haul. He was phenomenal in college, and showed great discipline and loyalty as well. He has excellent vision and his arm is strong enough. He reads defenses great and is obviously used to performing under less than ideal cirumstances. Considering what he was able to accomplish at Vandy against the toughest defenses in the NCAA and without any help anywhere on his team, it's scary to think what he will be able to do behind one of the best O-lines in football and throwing to Walker, Watts, and baby TO.

This has nothing to do with football but that is by far the best avatar I have ever seen.

Had to change my old one, someone named "Barracuda" on this board stole it, and I didnt want my opinions being confused with his.

J
All the Denver fans on this board thumping their chests after the draft in April. Denver lost ground this year to the rest of their division.

As Mike Holmgren has said over and over again...

It takes THREE YEARS to become comfortable in the offense, FIVE YEARS to master it.

Cutler is next to worthless in redraft leagues because he figures to be the #3 QB on a team that has serious playoff and Super Bowl aspirations. I can't imagine him starting absent an injury disaster at QB for the Broncos.

In an inaugural dynasty league, however, he may be more valuable than QB32 just because of how kind the system he's in is to QB's.

Did anyone think he'd press Plummer for the #1 job this year?

J
Yup. Most of the Denver Sports Columnists are operating under the assumption that Cutler will be starting by week 12 at the latest. Of course, most of the Denver Sports Columnists (Jeff Legwold and Bill Williamson) are nothing more than rumormongers and gossip columnists writing about their poorly formed opinions. See: Paige, Woody.

Surf some of the the Shark Pool threads from late April.
It's part of what makes the draft fun to watch. Alot of April/May unfulfilled promise.

Broncos | Cutler struggled during last camp

Published Sat Jul 8 1:18:00 a.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Andrew Mason, of DenverBroncos.com, reports Denver Broncos QB Jay Cutler struggled during the first day of the team's last camp. Cutler said, "I couldn't call the plays the very first day of the last camp; I didn't have a clue what was going on; I got the playbook the day before." During this minicamp, Cutler feels more confident and he added, "I think going into the seven-on-seven and the team periods, I was a little uneasy about the snap count, getting the snap and what was going on, but at this camp, I feel a lot more confident under center." Head coach Mike Shanahan said, "He's done a good job (but) there's a big learning curve."
