D-coordinator Ron rivera's affect on San Diego's IDPs? (1 Viewer)

Thinking of picking up LB cooper... rivera former D coordinator for the bears and SD will keep the 3-4, just wondering if he has any certain "tendencies" that could affect the SD defense. thanks in advance

Rivera has no 3-4 experience at the upper levels other than what he's seen under Cottrell. We'll probably see him be a little more aggressive with his front seven, which could translate to a little more value for Shaun Phillips and maybe a few extra pass rush chances for Stephen Cooper. Otherwise, I think there's unlikely to be much difference.

do you think he'll be obligated to try to create pressure, as I imagine that's mostly the issue that created the vacancy for him?

I don't follow the Chargers enough to guess what A.J. Smith may have been thinking when he canned Cottrell, but that's been the main complaint with him as a DC in the past as well as in San Diego. The players were fussing over Cottrell being less aggressive than Phillips very early during the transition last season. I can't imagine that Rivera would be more vanilla (which would essentially be to drop eight and play zone) with the talent SD has at corner. Obligated, inevitable, compelled -- any of those terms would probably apply to Rivera's likely decision to increase the pressure from his front seven.
